  • @teemomain5913

    Little translation mistake. Adieu in French is far stronger than goodbye/aufwiedersehen (au revoir), it means see you after death(literally "to god" ) and imply that this is the last time you see someone. It is rarely used in French langage due to the strenght of it. You either use it when you leave someone you hate and never want to see again( you will only cross his path again in the afterlife), someone you love and who might not come back or someone who died, like a last goodbye. I often said auf wiedersehen or goodbye to my teachers, i've never told them adieu. It almosts sounds like a threat.

    • @lyzzie4282
      @lyzzie4282 Před 3 měsíci +1

      tbh, french don't use adieu not because it's a strong word, but because it sounds "old" and outdated. Might be used in a comedy, or even in written text when you'd want to put the emphasis on something (like, throught repetition) but that sounds overly dramatic. it's also not necesserilly linked to death. French peeps would usually use either "au revoir" and synonyms (which is similar to see you again/soon) or salut.
      In that case, goodbye is pretty much on the same level as Adieu, considering it comes from the abbreviated sentence "god be with ye" → godbwyes ; just like how adieu comes from ad deum or the old french a Dieu vos comant (I recommand you to god).
      and, well, I agree you can use adieu in a petty way with someone you dislike, but in itself, the word just is a way to send off someone you probably won't see again, or not for a long time. It's more ... neutral than anything.

    German is a noble language. Not that my native English is lacking in "soul"...but it carrys little emotional weight, as English is not "wordy" in the way other European languages can be for topics like this (English is better at "technical" descriptions, than "emotional" ones)

    • @teemomain5913
      @teemomain5913 Před rokem +1

      I agree, as a French, here is an example of what you are talking about. During the 60's, French music was all about emotions, words and lyrics( Jacques Brell, Brassens) but then English pop got more and more popular during the 60s/70s, and it started influence the way French music was written. I love English pop but it is not really focusing on the detailed descriptions of emotions. You can check "Ne me quitte pas" or "Amsterdam" by Jacques Brell (David Bowie made a translation in English for Amsterdam) and compair it with English pop and you will get what i mean

      In a funny way I like to compare this song to Springsteen's Letter to you (being big, big Springsteen fan as well ). Don't get me wrong not by genre, or anything like that. But the topic of entire album is kind of things people start to think when you get older and you se people passing away and hit the important stuff in life. For me this is till now the best Rammstein album. But I think they have lots of material coming with much much more mature topics. And with Tills lyricism and poetry, well they never disappoint.
