I'd go 'It's Alucard. It was that way in the old Universal monster movies. Y'know, the series which used Alucard as an alias for _Dracula_ . It's also the name of the son of Dracula in Castlevania, and that series _is_ Japanese. So Hellsing using Alucard is either referencing the former directly or indirectly via Castlevania, _or_ it's referencing the latter as Castlevania is easily the most prominent vampire-centered franchise in Japan.

Actually, the fact that you were a 13 year old boy instead of a 16-17 year old girl makes the whole situation much more tolerable and understandable. The early teen years are full of moments where, trying to prove that we're mature now and we know what we're doing or talking about, we all put our feet in our mouths.

From my time living in Japan (currently,) I've had a hayday reading foreign words in Katakana. I never realized that when you translate something, you need to think about what the word was supposed to be rather than blindly following how it's expressed in Katakana. This is a perfect example. Japanese and English have different phonemes, and because of that Alucard and Arukado would be almost the same to a native speaker. I also can't stand fans like this. I've seen a lot of Crispin Freeman interviews and let me tell you, he is a really smart guy, very eloquent and he knows he's job, this video is a proof of that.
This is like the Artoria/Arturia spelling and Altria from the Fate series. I can't believe mistakes like this are occurring some 15 years later. She's a genderbent version of King Arthur, a British hero. Artorias. And if you say that makes her fictional enough to justify fucking her name up, then I point to Lancer. Cú Chulainn. Legendary Irish hero. Coo-Cullen is how you pronounce it. Not Coo-Hoorin. If the country of origin is of a character outside of Japan, pronounce it correctly and not like a weeb.
