Numberphile Thsnk you for bringing us Johnny Ball again. More please 🤗
Numberphile You're already sponsored by Brilliant. Why do you have to support domestic terrorism by giving money to Jack Conte (at Patreon)?
I tried it with the two lines at 180° and it didn't work! 😜
I want to translate on Korean!!!
If it was difficult, I wanna translate myself!
For Korean subscribers
Numberphile Can you do an episode on how to remember ur social security number
In another universe this man is the friendly wizard who occasionally visits town and shows the schoolchildren magical fireworks
Or a ASMR CZcamsr
lol
Mathdalf the grey
He is a living legend!
You need to search for ‘Think of a number’. It was a UK children’s tv show from the eighties presented by this videos host, Johnny Ball.
Ask him about climate change
His voice is so involved in telling the story that I for a moment thought that I was watching a movie :)
Yeah that guy would make a great narrator. "Last time on Dragon Ball Z"...
??.
2:55 Me trying to remember how much money I have in my bank account
Name and Profile pic checks out.
My bank account? Ummm..... Too many digits, ask my assistance.
"Thirty-two thou...
...no... Nine" :D
Lovely bit, well played :)
The feels on this comment, so true.
😂😂😂
Johhny Ball is one of my favorite numberphile hosts, his storytelling is phenomenal.
I to..his like the guy on the channel "Grand illusion"😂.
David Attenborough but he teaches maths
@@typingreallyfast and the BBC decided to sideline him. Why? Don't want the population understanding too much maths?
??.
Me at school: (Not interested in math)
Me at home: *Obsessed with these videos*
i wish my math teacher was this engaging
@@zxp3ct3r41 you have to think, the kids of my generation were fired up to love maths by Johnny Ball and his contemporaries: how awful must so many of the teachers have been that those kids still ended up hating maths?
The fact that numberphile doesn't give you homework probably helps.
school is ranked play. this is quickplay. meaningless.
my favorite classes were shaped by the most engaging teachers
I love this guys voice. He's like the David Attenborough of mathematics, I lpve this so much.
"Here we see a finite matrix with random elements, a true beauty"
Yeah this guys voice is perfect ASMR
??.
Johnny: “What angle? Absolutely doesn’t matter.”
Me: Chooses 180°
you're gonna draw arcs then :)
32,824°
@@user-ds6jv5jf5o It's 180°
That's technically not 2 lines in that case.

That aha moment when the square root explanation comes together, that is literally what I live for. That high is going to carry me through the day, maybe the week. Can't believe I never saw this simple, beautiful method before.
definitely. freakin' awesome. very cool way to leverage the relationship of similar triangles, letting you multiply a number by itself (or conversely take the square root of the product). :)
I am pretty sure that you know this.
This "method" is known as "geometric mean theorem" and in school it is part of the "pythagorean theorem". So you should know it. :)
Easy Mathematics they don’t teach beautiful geometry like this at school level. Understanding that triangles formed on a diameter of a circle are similar and then applying Pythagoras to leverage that as a calculator is too abstract when the teacher just wants the unruly kids at the back to remember the compound interest formula so they pass the year. Later on at 17/18 it’s all mechanics and calculus, statistics and so on. No time for quaint old geometry. I doubt many would have ever found this short of some enthusiastic geometry professor in select universities indulging his class.
It really is a mind-opening perspective.
That one thing that makes you love Thales' theorem even more)
This is an extremely underrated ASMR channel.
false.
"And you might say why.Well cause thats what makes it work" XD
It's like the baseball thing in Blast From the Past. Why does the batter run to the base if he will be forced out? Because he must
??.
Johnny Ball could get me enthused about watching paint dry, what a legend.
I freaking love Johnny Ball. He made maths interesting and fun back in the 70s and 80s and he hasn't changed at all.
Yeah he really hasn't. Great seeing him again - he like Hippocrates, has been missed!
"Now, let's do this for the numbers one hundred and thirty-six milli-… "
*Vietnam flashbacks*
"Hang on, let's do just do two times two."

I grew up enjoying Johnny on TV and now I get to enjoy him here 😃
3:25 when the exam says "explain your answer"
"Because that what makes it work"
7:30 this man is a treasure
Around 1996 I went to see him give a physics lecture at RAF Cranwell, and he was absolutely brilliant. Such enthusiasm, the way he held that lecture theatre for an hour/hour and a half, he was like an interesting rockstar. Just love this man and I'm really pleased to see him doing content for Numberphile.
It's lovely reading the comments on Johnny Ball's videos. For the rest of the world - he's famous - he was a stalwart of UK children's TV in the 1980s - "Think of a Number" stands out. His daughter hosts the BBC Radio 2 breakfast radio show, and was a famous TV host in her own right through her late teens and twenties :)
Always a delight to see Johnny again after all these years. One of my favourite TV presenters from way back when I was a lad. He's so great!
Mr Ball, I remember him from play school and all the shows he did when I was a kid !! I can't think of any presenter today as engaging on such tricky subjects !!
More Johnny Ball please. I've been watching him for over 40 years now and he never fails to be an absolutely brilliant presenter, storyteller and explainer. Just fabulous.
I remember this technique from the Roller Ruler adverts in the 1980s. Turns out Hippocrates of Chios was two millennia ahead of the curve, and he only needed straight lines. Great vid, as always.
How did you comment 10 min ago, if the video came out 1 min ago
@@phrapsthemighty because it came out earlier than that. It was just unlisted.
Roller Ruler! What a blast from the past!
That’s a wonderful, if unintentional, pun by the way.
You might say Hippocrates of Chios was.... under the curve. I’ll see myself out.
I wish I’d had maths teaching like this. Love Johnny Ball.
Maths with Muneer you’re right (I’m already subscribed😉), even at 58 it’s not too late!
Johnny is an absolute legend, more Johnny Ball please.
8:10 : The light wants to tell you that you have two right angles in your cupboard
All I see is a gameboy on the table.
I still have no idea how you got Johnny Ball on board, but he's a perfect fit for the channel!
I have *so* much affection for Johnny Ball - thank you both for doing these videos.
Don't forget that Johnny Ball was being his day's Numberphile, on the BBC, before Brady was even born! (And almost before I was born!)
What a treat to see Johnny Ball on Numberphile. Thank you. I remember being fascinated by his TV shows as a kid in the UK. Too bad my parents didn't follow on where he left off. People - if you can see your children becoming interested or inspired by something - please encourage them further as much as you can.
I love numberphile, but I LOVE this guy. Have him on here more please!
I grew up with Johnny. Absolute legend.
age 49, I suddenly discover, watching and (especially) listening to this, how much Johnny meant to me in my childhood. This is Proustian in the loveliest way
Watching this was a beautiful experience that instantly took me back to childhood learning, Jonny is fabulous!
All that's missing is him drawing a happy little tree next to the lines
1:19 I can't be the only one who thinks this is cute
It IS wonderful!
Johnny Ball is on numberphile
thats all you need to know
This man is a national treasure and taught me more than school did.
Thank you Johnny
Ok, We need Johnny to voice and narrate so many more things
Loved the way how he explained all this stuff very excitedly... And in a lovely way
Oh wow ... I remember watching Johnny Ball doing science shows when I was a kid (he was the UK's version of Bill Nye)
Hippocrates of Chios also contributed to the "squaring the circle" problem: He found that some shapes bounded by arcs had the same area as triangles or rectangles (Lunes of Hippocrates)
Great video, lovely to see Johnny Ball - even better to see people from outside the UK discover him in the comments :D
Hearing JB's voice is so nostalgic for me. Takes me back to watching his shows when I got home from school.
Man, I always despised math and my math teachers growing up, but I adore this channel
i love how he goes from 34692*3 to 3*4 and from 32000 to 9
Can't believe you didn't include Johnny Ball's name in the title! Great to see him doing more of his magic.
his voice is so nice idk why
Wonderful to see you again, Johnny!
I grew up with "Think of a number" and its a joy to see JB on Numberphile.
Me at math class: Why do I have to sum the root of a and divide by b?
Teacher: *Because that's what makes it work*
Johnny Ball - absolute legend. 'nuff said!
This was an amazing video, both content and host!
Delighted to see JB on your channel!
I loved Johhny's shows was I was a kid, great to see him here
more of this guy, please!
Terrific video. Thanks for making and sharing it.
“You might say why? Because that’s what makes it work”

what a great guy! just makes me happy to listen to him
I love this guys enthusiasm.
Johnny Ball! what a legend :)
I used to use this technique (multiplication/division) in mechanical drafting back when in the day (you know, T-Square, Set Squares etc.) to extend or divide lines.
Marvelous! Thanks for sharring!
Very cool. And I love the enthusiasm.
the graphics in this video are brilliant!
JOHNNY BALL! Amazing person, good to see you!
i saw this in an old book on technical drawing, blew me away then and it still does hearing it again
His sense of humor is adorable ! I like it so much.
His pedagogy is so sublime ..Kudos
The man is a legend. Great video.
I love johnny ball, was big part of my childhood on tv. Great voice
I really enjoy such shows.
Outstanding seriously I am amazed
Mind blown! Awesome stuff.
I love this man and his voice. I'm addicted to his videos !
his voice puts me back to my childhood. he needs to be back on the TV
I would love to see more from him, he is amazing!
He is literally the best math teacher ever! I love him
This is awesome. Time to code it
I used to watch "Think of a Number" and "Think Again" when I got home school. One of my favourite programmes. Johnny Ball is a legend.
We, and the world, need more Johnny Ball in our lives.
Absolutely wonder. More of Johnny Ball please.
Always fascinating. I love the episodes like this one that show alternate methods of calculating something.
I was a bit miffed that there was no upload for pi day yesterday, but this video was so much fun that all is forgiven ☺️ I like this guy! Have more of him please! His voice is awesome and his enthusiasm is infectious!
Johnny Ball what a legend!! Takes me back a few decades to my childhood
With SPCD, ADHD, & dyslexia; I absolutely love this episode!! This makes so much sense to me being a visual learner. Brilliant!❤
So simple, yet so beautiful
So well written, funny and explained clearly
I didn't realise that I had missed Johnny Ball. Until now.
Johnny Ball - legend. Seriously.
for people of a certain vintage, Johnny was a legend and he's still got it
More Johnny Ball!!
This is so cool! I love Numberphile, one of my favorite YT channels! I only wish I had this in High School
Still remember doing this with a ruler and compass in class... Pretty useful!
Every time I have a mathematical epiphany, I feel like a monkey impressed at a magic trick.
I just watched this and then had to double-check how long the video was. Ten minutes went by in 60 seconds! JB da man.
Stunning
"you ask why? because thats what makes it work" is possibly one of my favourite sayings
Love Johnny Ball!
