- Irregular zellige tiles are a popular choice for tile walls. Ceramic or porcealain tiles the most common types. When installing these tiles, special considerations are needed:
1.) Grout joints will vary, so diffent size spacers or wedges will be needed to tolerate the differnt size grout joints between each tile.
2.) The porcelain tiles can be cupped, warped, or bowed in the middle. Backbuttering in the middle of the tile to create a good bond and coverage is necessary.
3.) These tiles are not perfect, so installing them will take an artistic eye to create a good overall pattern and design.
4.) The tiles can be set in many different designs including vertical stack (soldier), horizontal stack, vertical offset, or horizontal offset (brick set, or running bond).

To heck with the tile! Look at those biceps! Well done, Coach. As a fellow Californian, I'd feel super lucky if I had you on my project. Best wishes...
He didn’t say “I love being your tile coach!” 😢 Just kidding. We love you TC.
I am a plumber “people love it when we show up, hate paying us when we leave “ offended :) good job fellas :).
Haha. I had an old GC that used to tell me that plumbers know two things: 1.) Sh*t runs down downhill. 2.) Payday is on Friday. Much love to all the plumbers out there!!
That tile my man WOW. I did a B/room wall in that same color 4x4 historical renovated home from 1906.
Love your videos boss !!!
Thank you! I love the tiles too.
The latout energises the user in a satisfactory way.
Full tile in front cut tile behind. 😊😊
Best tile advice from this guy. It’s nice to see a pro not using lasers I’m the same way a level and line is way faster and more accurate in my opinion.
Great video and beautiful installation 👍
Thanks Steve.
This is so helpful to see! My B/room shower needs repointing and I really want to do it myself. Your video makes me think I probably could. I know it's not easy but you make it look less complicated than I originally imagined it to be. I'm also considering redoing the drywall joints at the ceiling above the shower. Tips are appreciated! Such skill and beautiful work. Thank you!
Well done man, so much more knowledge and expertise to what you do. Love your attention to MAKING the details easier. I still have yet to do a mud float. Looking forward to it because of you and your teams videos! No build out sounds like a dream!
Come out and take a class from me!
At about 22:30 I could hear your cameraman breathing in my super-sensitive headphones, freaked me the hell out... lol
Awesome video.
Video shot in Pablo Cimadevila style!! Haha !! especially with the ring tile ending the video! Dig it!
Looks nice.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Very good job man, these tiles are really hard to do, wish I could watch this before I did my first
Jesus Łøves you Tile coach and your Crew .,
Yes he does!!!
Amen 🙏
Saludos coach👍
Absolutely excellent instruction on laying out the tile with story boards, I'll be doing that on my next tile job.
How will you be finishing the exposed edges of the tile in the niche and vertical sides?
Great job on the tile work. But man, that's a lot grout to clean if it gets moldy.
Hello. Can you tell me please which of these thinset good for setting tile and uncoupling mambrane, Keraflex SG and Laticrete 252
You don't need to backbutter but I like to soak them quickly in the water. Tile tend to suck water from cement compound and cement need water. Happened that tile was coming off just because mortar was to dry.
Second thing I don't like pencil coz you always cover it with adhesive. 😂 Rather one vertical peace of mdf where niche is. By the way I hate those tiles. They need to look in perfect but they need to be perfect. 😀 Good job. You're pro. Enjoying watching you.
These particular tiles are porcelain, not ceramic so they don't absorb water. They are really hard to cut too. They look beautiful but not so easy to install. Thanks for the love brother!
Amazing work, you are a true artisan.
IMHO, customer choose the most gross combination of color texture...
Thank you! Yes that’s the great thing about art, we all have our preferences.
If you can’t get it centered, you can switch to a continuous flow. Well worth getting those full tiles on the niche 👍
Do you backbutter small tiles off camera too?
in new your, Home depot and lowes sale pre-fabricated Water Resistant Cement Backer Board. this is especially made for shower. why didn't you use that? don't they have that in california?.
Nice belt on your pants.😊
I noticed you didn't put a waterproofing membrane neither sheet or liquid? Did I miss something, I think you used a rubber membrane for the pan liner, so you dont need to waterproof the deck mud, but, how about the walls. You're the best, I learned alot from you, im scratching my head, thinking I missed something,.

I like surface waterproofing but this works too.
Versabond is great. No need for $40 per bag thinsets on the vast majority of insulations.
Its seems tile coach didn’t spend a lot of time trying to press the tiles to collapsing the ridges. Also coach didn’t look to use a float or board to get the tile flat to its neighbors. And last, it looks like as a result coach didn’t have squeeze out between tiles that would require cleaning later before grouting.
I am not sure I would be showing no backbuttering on tiles. You are a professional I would definitely screw it up
It seems that you never give us quite enough information to do 1 shower just like you. I am looking to do a mud bed curb less shower, large format tile, FloFx drain and Hydro Ban waterproofing layer.
There are so many different situations. Curb or curbless, This one was actually a pan liner that the person who hired us requested. So it’s just hard because I use so many different methods. I’m pretty sure I have a video like you are looking for somewhere in my library.
Pretty sure I’ve seen him do all those things separately in other videos… Another option is to pay him for his coaching advice for your specific project. That’s what I’m planning to do before I start my project.
What trowel are you using there coach ?

@@TileCoach thanks !!
Do you copy the layout to the tile chick from Texas
Can I install a tiles like this with out spacers?
No
@vlrdmtr - I'm a Tiler with 40 years of experience down under (Australia), I lay tiles like that all the time without spacers, but there are a few caveats.
First you need to use a premixed glue, usually referred to as Tile Mastic it has enough body to it, to hold the tile on the wall so the tile does not slump.
Second you can't use it between two impervious surfaces, or you have to wait a long before grouting at least a few days for that size tile in a well ventilated area.
Third in the example the Tile Coach is showing the screed would have to fully cure first before laying the tiles and you might have to prime the wall before applying the Tile Mastic, for plasterboard, cement sheeting or waterproofing membrane you can apply the glue directly with the correct primer if required.
What do you tell customers when they want to lay that stuff down and do a brick lay.... Because I run into multiple tile that are so bowed that it looks like a basket weave.😂
Backbutterig ahower tile enclosure at least to a 5ft height cannot be uderestimated. Grout sealers fail if not maintained. and moisture -creep finds its way.
Nice job but what an horrendous colour! Reminds me of post war UK hospital corridors. But each to their own of course.
Why some guys don't start from the bottom????????
Deck mud for waterproofing!?
The waterproofing will be underneath the deck mud.
This one has a pan liner
How you been my man? Been a min.
He quickly mentioned at one point that there is Denshield behind the floated walls.
Maybe I’m in the minority but I’ve never been a fan of the vertical tile look.
