"And then of course it goes into another song I'm sure" - Nope, it actually doesn't.
This song is the first-person view of Shakespeare's Hamlet, as Hamlet ponders his life. For example, the line: "I'll take seven lives for one and then my only father's son" is the lives taken to avenge Hamlet's father's death, finally adding his own to the list.
The abrupt ending is really a metaphor for how life can just end like that - especially in Hamlet's case. Once the song makes sense the ending really wraps up the song quite nicely.

'Pull me under' was the only Dream Theater single to have a major commercial impact in 1992, charting on the Mainstream Rock tracks chart... it was kind of a surprise hit for the band, who had just released their 2nd album 'Images and words' and begun touring for the first time since they had formed as the band Majesty in 1985. It pushed the album to gold sales (half million copies) in the US and also had success in Europe and Japan.
The record company pushed the ballad 'Another day' and the rocker 'Take the time'... as singles from the record, but neither had the same impact in 1993... grunge rock had taken over the airwaves and Dream Theater's brand of prog rock was beginning to wane in popularity, as the band recorded the 3rd album 'Awake' in 1994.
Formed in Berklee College of Music in 1985 by 3 avid Rush, Iron Maiden and Queensryche fans - Mike Portnoy (drums), John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass)... the band was named Majesty and recruited Kevin Moore (keyboards) and recorded their first demos w/ singer Chris Collins... Majesty was signed in 1988 as Charlie Dominici (vocals) joined and recorded their debut album 'When dream & day unite'... which was a crude representation of what the band could deliver musically. They had to change the band name in 1989 from Majesty to Dream Theater. However, the band's label Mechanic was not a prolific record company and the album was left without promotion.
By 1991, Dream Theater were in limbo but had written a lot of new music... new vocalist James LaBrie came on board and a new label Atco signed Dream Theater in 1992 after their new demos created some serious buzz. Kevin Moore wrote the lyrics to 'Pull me under' and a few others... It came as a shock when Moore left Dream Theater in 1994 after writing and recording the 'Awake' album.
Their 2nd album 'Images and words' sold remarkably well by 1993 and they had also recorded a live concert video "Images and words: Live in Tokyo" from that tour.
The 3rd album 'Awake' was a darker record, arguably better than 'Images and words' musically... but the grunge era diminished Dream Theater's popularity, and the album sold less than half the numbers... Kevin Moore quit the band, and was replaced by keyboardist Derek Sherinian for the tour, and they recorded the EP 'A change of seasons' in 1995 (which saw Mike Portnoy writing more lyrics for the band).

I remember hearing this on the radio and thought "wow this is like Queensryche on steroids". The grunge scene was starting to kick off, so it was kinda weird hearing this song mixed in with a lot of the other current stuff being played during that period.
Being a hard rock and classic prog fan, I totally welcomed it.

@@SHREDTILLDEAD It's just a matter of opinion. There's a lot of great Queensryche music that I think John would enjoy. Doesn't mean he can't cover other bands as well, which he would.

Surprisingly this song is in 4/4 time signiture , and one of the " easier " DT songs for drummers to learn , but I was in high school when it came out and had a hard time learning this song.

Operation mindcrime -Queensryches concept album you have to hear from 1st to last song in order while reading lyrics in screen to truly appreciate.
-I was hooked when my drum teacher turned me onto this masterpiece back in the late 80s- rocked my world & changed my life for the better.
1st song -Revolution calling -reflects society & political corruption happening at that time & even today-brilliant-👍

The Images and Words album was far ahead if it's time, production-wise.
It was released in 1992, and the production/sound on this album, 30 years removed, is still as good as anything that modern technology has to offer .. and it's especially evident on this song.
    Kudos to David Prater!

Really recommend At Wit's End from album Distance Over Time from 2019. The outro is the most beatutiful/melodic gorgeous piece of music, I have ever heard. Have heard that song maybe a hundered times. The ending part still gives me goose bumps every time...

Is this song about past life regression?
“ Pull me under” (hypnosis) realizing reincarnation is how we experience eternal life?
Awareness of Past lives recalled realizing existence over centuries “7lives for 1 “ seeing the changes in world evolution over “ centuries -“Arrows fly /seas increase & fall again-“ (earth changes death in disasters but yet coming back again as another person living somewhere else in the world 🌏when you realize that as a spirit having a human experience we never really die. “Every breath leads me one less to my last “ “i am not afraid “
I never really thought about what lyrics in this song mean or about how that concept could work if you think about it .
Thanks for reading lyrics I learned a lot about you from your video reactions &you have awesome taste in music.
Thanks for doing this song & welcome to Dream Theater .
I have a suggestion for more DT To do ASAP as your Next reaction video-Metropolis 2 it’s about past life regression hypnosis & has a concept of reincarnation throughout - lyrically brilliant musically phenomenal -
I just found it last week & have to share as I listened thought about how you would love it musically & how you need the lyrics version of this Cd as you do your reaction video let audience read lyrics along with the music .
I was blown away by the subject matter & how it could be a movie based on the soundtrack .
