    I always wondering if there exist a delay between the band's play and the sound coming out from the speaker. Hereby I refer to delays caused by propagations, conversions, processings etc. So ?

    • @TejasM14
      @TejasM14 Před 8 lety +22

      No. Waves plugins can be used with Waves Soundgrid servers which are a DSP processing computers for the plugins. They are ensured to work at a super low latency. A few hundred samples. 2-10 milliseconds. That is super super low latency.

    • @tennrebel1576
      @tennrebel1576 Před 7 lety +2

      szahuba yes there is a seconds delay but its mostly effects

    • @JRandallS
      @JRandallS Před 5 lety +4

      The speed of sound is a problem in a big venue. If you are micing drums (which you are for this venue for sure) then you have the problem of the sound the drums produce arriving after their electronically reproduced sound out of the speaker, not even including latency from the processing.
      Typically these places might even have a second set of speakers further back to compensate for the loss in volume from the front to the back. Also they don't have to deafen the front row in order to make the sound project the entire distance to the back.
      Anyway, that second row of speakers is maybe half way back from the front. The sound has to be delayed for that set of speakers in order for the natural sound from the drums, and the front row of speakers to catch up . If the drums are way back, then you might have to slightly delay the front row as well. Otherwise you have a smearing of the audio image by the arrival of sounds that appear to be generated at different times.
      The plugins used (waves, UA etc.) are processed by a dedicated computer and the connections are through fiber or some really fast method, to keep the latency to a minimum. Often the performers will want to hear some of the processed signal, and they cannot have latency to any noticible degree or it will through their performance off. So latency is a big problem that they fight all the time.

      Good points John. You're right The System Tech and FOH needs to be vigilant with the latency throughout.
      Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the Hollywood Bowl utilizes delay towers. I think they employ surrounds firing back into the good seats, but the line array mains cover adequately to the back row.
      That said, it may be act dependent. If they want to pay for delay towers (often logistical pain in the ass*, and expensive), then whatever.
      In my experience, it's typically mammoth outdoor shows (for sheer distance), or stadium shows (for distant coverage with significant vertical component).
      *in my experience, delay towers typically add the requirements of small crane for steel erection, power distro feeders, signal via fiber, copper or both, water supply (and subsequent draining) for tower counter-weighting, plus all the labor for load in and strike.
      Add in time/phase alignment and EQ'ing, yep, adds up to some significant logistical resources required.
