It’s a great reminder for people to make sure they take lessons, and for them not to fly big kites on land in higher winds. It can be dangerous and that’s why so many people are pointing it out. It’s a good PSA!

How do people landboard then if it’s so dangerous to fly your kite on land? My wheels on my mountain board don’t work well in the water. Just saying

There’s a lot of fair feedback on here. You definitely shouldn’t go fly a full size kite on land without lessons as it can be dangerous. For this video I recommend people take lessons first, and then go out on a light wind day or with a smaller kite and try these things in the water if they can. It’s always safer to land on water , and most serious kite accidents seem to happen around land. That’s why there’s a lot of comments around the risks , and it’s fake, people need to be cautious with this stuff

    Good video,
Especially the water start on land, to get the feel for how much power is needed to drag you up and the muscle memory for it, I used that a lot when teaching my nephew, helped him to do actual water starts super quickly when he got out on the water with the board

    • @erbartlett

As per the strong reminders in the other comments, it has to be done with the right knowledge, the right size kites, and the right conditions to be safe. But it can be super effective, and I think it would have helped me progress faster had some one helped me through these. Glad it helped your nephew!

@@erbartlett I’m from the generation that grew up without bike helmets and man buns, I think too many of those commenting on your video in a negative way are from that generation,

@@vikingh3008 it’s a pretty strong reaction… but I’m open minded about it. I’ve seen beginner kites do really dumb things. In Greece I saw people that had never kites before or taken a lesson just unwrap brand new kites and hot launch on the beach and just get launched into other people. My suspicion is that those people didn’t get those bad ideas from watching a CZcams tutorial, they just did something really dangerous because they didn’t think about it at all. Anyway, I think good useful knowledge is generally good to put out into the world. Appreciate your perspective!

I usually like your videos but the whole premise of this video is dangerous in my opinion. I learned that people should spend as little time as possible on land with the kite, since most accidents happen on land.
In my opinion these skills are best practiced in shallow water, where you can get off the board, stand up and walk back. Also make sure there are no obstachles downwind.

Totally, great feedback, and it's true, people shouldn't be on a beach fully powered with a full size kite. They should do this on a light wind day with a smaller kite AFTER taking lessons.

Flying a practice kite is great for beginners. I bought a very good one for lots of money (3 meter) but could have bought two for the price. It's such a necessity to just learn to fly the kite. It's like learning to ride a bike. The more you do it the more confidence you will have on the water ~ DON'T NEGLECT THIS ~ Dedicate lots of time to this before you even invest in the real gear.

Beach flying should only be done under instruction on short lines and very small kites. Regardless of wind conditions, I would not recommend these drills for beginners, they are dangerous for the pilot, for the gear and for anyone else that may be around. Especially the water starts one! That's a big no no !!

Yep, great reminder. That’s why I put the safety warning at the beginning that this is for people after lessons on a light wind day or with a smaller kite. I also mention to do the water starts in the water, but I couldn’t film it that way because I cut my leg on a foil and it got infected. Doctor had me out of the water till I heal :(

Why would you need to practice anything on land if there's enough wind to be on water. I don't think doing anything besides starting and landing a kite on the beach is a good idea. Most of the kitesurfing accidents happen on land when hitting an obstacle. IMHO it's better to stay away from the beach as much as possible when having the kite in the air especially for a beginner. I've been kiting for 13 years now and I know what it's like to be suddenly yanked into the air and then thrown hard onto the ground. So beginners ... please stay as much in the water as possible best if it's at least one line length from the shore. More so Core Sensor 3 bar that you are using is unsafe. It does not depower the kite entirely after using the safety release. I've had two problems with it on my XR 15 and 12 where it would still pull like crazy after QR. I've sent it back to Core and they've changed the line setup to the one from 3S. I'll test it as soon as the season starts.

Yeah, shallow water is preferable to land if you’ve got access to it.

To everyone seeing this video: NEVER do this! Dangerous and potentially lethal. ALWAYS practice inside the water. Especially the waterstart-excercise is dangerous AF..

    • @erbartlett
      @erbartlett  Před 2 lety

Thank you for the strong reminder. The key take aways are to do this AFTER having taken lessons. Then do it on a light wind day with a smaller kite, and to do the waterstarts and lightwind exercises in the water (which I couldn't do because of an infection). Appreciate it!

putting your ellbow UP AKA "car driving" is exactly what you do not want to do...... and the other stuff in the video is simply dangerous.....
