Thank you for this comparison video! Was unsure which version to get since it's my first time reading this series, but you've convinced me to bite the bullet and get the 2020 illustrated edition :)
Thank you very much for this video. You helped me to get the right one. I just bought the last box set.
2020 alan lee edition just arrived today! I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed to have this!❤️❤️ absolutely gorgeous & beautiful book set!❤️❤️
That edition does seem to look great in all the reviews that I've seen! Sadly my copy from amazon was a counterfeit with blurry letters and art (and also fell apart rather easilly after being opened from the box), so I had to return it. Don't think you can get that real edition from amazon now-a-days sadly (as all the sellers there seem be selling the fake one according to reviews) and no bookstores near me have any in stock :(
I am happy that you managed to get the real version though!
@@niki45nk62I had it from Amazon UK without any issues. Maybe you got it from Amazon USA? It’s in perfect shape and not even a scratch.
I got my 2020 Illustrated Alan Lee edition today, and I have to say I cannot remember ever being this impressed simply by opening a book.
Just bought the 2020 illustrated set for my brother for Christmas. Thanks for the comparison video! So good to see it in real time 😊
I'm currently reading through my pocketbook leather(vinyl)bound they fit perfectly in my tiny little hobbit handsies.
I'm new to reading LOTR (seen the movies but haven't read them) and I seriously bought the alan lee 2020 edition lotr set because of your recommendation. They are the only LOTR books i've purchased and i'm enjoying the hobbit thus far! The quality and reading experience is very nice.
As a massive lotr Fan thank you so much. I’m liking the leather ones
I ended up purchasing the mass market paperback editions at 8:10 because it's technically going to be my first real read-through and I don't want to spend much on LOTR if I'm not going to be a huge fan of it. So far, I've read The Hobbit and enjoyed it and starting Fellowship! Quality of the books are "okay" but for $20 (cheaper if they're used copies) it's not too bad.
Wonderful comparison. My wife and I love books and were trying to decide on a set. You really sold us on the 2020 edition with that beautiful artwork.
Love your content! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Thats an awesome collection!!❤
Really cool collection. 😎
Just bought the 2020 Alan Lee Illustrated Box set today and im super excited to get me hands on it!
The Alan Lee versions are Beautiful. i bought 3 copies of it because i loved it so much (i know, extreme) 1 for myself. 1 for my girlfriend and another just to keep sealed in my collection. they're definitely a must buy for any Tolkien fan.
the paper quality too is really really nice. bright white, no transparency, lovely illustrations that are either in cutouts on pages or interwoven into the text on others. some real passion put into them. :)
Excellent video!
Nice collection sir. I love the lotr/hobbit. I first read it in late 80s and I have a few sets as well. I have the 2014 leatherette set and the Easton press edition. I might get the Alan lee set too!
Nice collection. I want to start my own collection as well.
Thank you very much!! Beautiful video!!
Thank you too!
He attracted to books
I have the 1999 Alan Lee paperback set as well and that is the one I read.
What a nice collection ! Congratulation sir. I was looking for this amazing illustrated boxed set of 2020 but unfortunatly it doesn't exist in french .... it is a true disappointment because i have never seen a book set that beautiful .... it is not the first time i will tell it but the editors in your country are far superior in term of quality ! (Sorry for my bad english)
I found a full set of the movie release books at a thrift store for a couple bucks a piece. Spines never been creased never read. They are cheap feeling but that also means I can just toss them in my bag or car and bring them wherever without worrying too much about it.
I have the millennium edition including the cd. Its a disc of Tolkien himself recording himself reading passages from the books. The six book thing is consistent with each of the three book editions being comprised of two books each plus the appendices
I have watched the first LOTR movie and part of the second movie a long long time ago, but I couldn't get into it. I think a part of that though is that I have trouble focusing on a movie for long, and I start missing tons of stuff so I didn't really understand anything later on, therefore I stopped. Now, I wanted to revisit it, but instead go through the books, as I like reading before watching adaptations, and things are dragged out so you can't really miss anything major as is extremely easy in movies. The set I got honestly I absolutely love. It just fits the vibe so well. I'm talking about the 2014 Leather Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set. I love it so much. It doesn't feel like it's cheap (It's not exactly cheap but I got it for a very fair price). The books are small so very very easy to take with you while travelling, and they just generally look great. On the shelf, it really stands out imo. I haven't read the LOTR trilogy yet, but I have read The Hobbit. It was pretty good but of course, it was meant for children so can't really criticize it that much. But really excited to start the actual trilogy, and to see what literally *everyone* means with "it's one of if not the best fantasy story out there"
I have the UK centenary edition, you should look hat out all the lee artwork.
There is very nice 2013 Collector’s Edition with the Hobbit. It is rather rare now, and costs too much on the second market, but if you’ll manage to find it for a reasonable price, it would be wonderful.
Clothbound, nice cover design…
Not very deluxe quality but good
It can be in a very nice box set, and separately.
What do you think of the 2023 Folio Society limited edition?
Hello, is the Alan lee 2020 box set acid free paper quality?
Except that 1973 boxset, I got all others 😊
Can you pls tell which is better to buy the all in one or the illustated edition❤❤
For the 2017 treasury edition, can you buy each book (same edition) individually, if I don’t want to get all 4 at the same time? It seems like I can with the hobbit but idk about the 3 lord of the rings books… thanks!
Is the print any larger in the trade paperback editions than in the mass market?
Any opinion on the Folio edition sets?
4:26 I loved those, I've always thought of it as really 6 books instead of 3 (The War of The Ring is my favorite) wish there were more editions like that
I am ten years old I love LOTR I have that 1973 box set it's not gold
Is the 2020 printed on glossy paper ? I'm thinking between the 2002 and 2020 illustrated editions
its mat!
Oh wow, I grew up with my dad's '70s Ballantine paperbacks, and never imagined they were ever issued in a box. And a really pretty one at that! Thanks for schooling us on Tolkien history!
Not leather. Imitation leather. I quite like it though. Feels nice.
Goos video. I just Wanted to know which one to buy
