I would also like to add that the Mariposa is a hiker favourite that experienced hikers use. And because of hikers like Tara, new hikers can find out about great packs. And the great thing about osprey, they have the best comfort rating and pretty good durability.
Did the JMT last summer with a Mariposa. Great pack and by far the pack I saw being carried most by other hikers. They were everywhere. There were a fair amount of ULA Circuits as well. The Mariposa seems to have really caught on recently. I'm at about 23 pounds with five days of food and a liter of water. When I resupplied at MTR and I went up to 28 pounds, I was a bit worried about the carry, but it was great; super comfortable. I'm no longer shopping for a pack; this is the one.
Anatomically, women have a pronounced suprascapular notch in our shoulders, so a greater dip, so that is a reason why transferring weight off of the shoulders is better, especially for women. The ultralight backpacks with no hip belt can be super uncomfortable for women no matter how ul. Personally, I tried on the Osprey in the ul version, and it fit me awkwardly and was noisy. I have the gossamer gear g420 and it was night and day more comfy than a ul liteaf backpack with minimized hipbelt. I've spent a thru hike contemplating backpacks for women, and your three choices are aligned with that for all of the reason you mention. The Atom pack also has some common features. There's still room for the ultimate ul pack to be designed for women. I'm older, so the less weight I carry adds to the longevity of continuing. Women's thighs tend to have an outward flare... another difference in anatomy, so the carry is very different to consider.
I bought an Osprey Aura in 2014. I tried some other packs the last few years to try to get a lighter base weight. I ended up buying their new version. I really loved how it fit and the air flow between the pack and my back.
I have had the men's Osprey 50L pack since 2017. I totally agree with your assessment. It is heavier than many packs but is by far the most comfortable pack I have used. I did purchase a light weigh Chinese Z-Pack clone a few years ago but even though it's half the weight of the Osprey it is not as comfortable. Maybe if I was doing a thru-hike I would go for the lighter weight but as a weekend 2-3 day hiker the Osprey has been perfect for me!
🎒I recently upgraded from my Gregory Pack to an Atom Packs Mo 50, and so far I love it. The Mariposa, though, was also very high on my list. I'm glad to hear you have no major complaints on that pack. I would have been fine with either. Personally, I prefer a rolltop bag rather than the top closure map pocket on the Mariposa. I have friends using the Mariposa, and they all like it as well.
🎒 because of my CPAP I got a Gregory Diva. I start off with 5#. I went to REI because I could not get the pack I purchased on line to fit right. I should have known better - famous last words. I can tell anyone from experience to go to an outfitter to get fitted properly. The REI staff took shoulder harness and hip belt from other Gregory packs to give me the fit I needed. They went above and beyond. I am hoping I can get rid of the CPAP in the future, but I do what I have to do to get out there. Can't sleep without it.
Thanks for the nice review. I've owned the Mariposa and found it comfortable and versatile. I've used it for alpine climbing adventures where it carried ~35lbs reasonably comfortable, as well as quick overnighters with little gear. I appreciate that it can strip down and be pretty minimal without the frame and hipbelt. 🎒 Looking into an Atom+ or Swift V for my next pack.
I have had my Exo mountain gear pack for many years now. I first got it when I started doing SERE in the military, but it just fit my back like a glove so I kept it. That thing has held up in the toughest of environments, including 3 months in the Arctic circle! Definitely out of many peoples price range, but if your life depends on it I would consider the price worth it.

Aura was uncomfortable for me. The side straps were either digging in or too loose. I got a deuter. Narrower and I found it more comfortable. Loved it and it’s also a great pack. Now I am looking at Gossamer or ULA. I want to try something lighter and see how I feel

I have quite a few packs of my own: Osprey Atmos (for heavy loads), Gossamer Gear Mariposa and G4-20 and Hyper-light packs, and my current go to pack, a Durston Gear Kakwa 40 pack. The latter few packs are ultralight. I also have a Z-Packs backpack I used on my 2018 thru-hike of the JMT. All of these are excellent packs. I'm wondering what year and month you did the JMT. I have no experience with Six Moons Designs gear, but the pack you reviewed sounds good. I guess having so many packs, each having their own specialized use, makes me a gear head, lol. Thanks for sharing the info on the backpacks! My issue is I’m thin and have no hip fat. Packs always seem to dig into my bony hips. I also have a bad shoulder. So looking for your thoughts on thickening up the hip belt on the Osprey pack. 🎒
🎒 I've been looking and for a good backpack for about a month now. I own a academy sports and outdoor backpack that almost weighs 5 pounds. I had it for 10 years now lol and am ready to upgrade to an ultra light one.
Good luck in your hunt for the perfect pack. I love all three of these. But if you are going lightweight I'd recommend either the Mariposa or any of the SMD packs.
🎒 I'm just starting out and in trying to go light, I purchased the hyperlite mountain gear pack. It's a great pack, I just feel it's probably meant for a more experienced hiker with a lower base weight. I have shoulder issues and am having to painfully cinch my waist belt (and I'm not skinny in that area) to take weight off my shoulders 😔 I feel eventually I may be trying a different pack. hoping to start the A.T in April! Hi.i just made a longer comment with an explanation, but the hyperlite is basically made for men who carry weight very well on their shoulders. I switched from a like pack to a Gossamer Gear with a nice wrap around hip belt, and the carry is infinitely better. I think all of her suggestions are great.... suspension system/ wrap around hip belt. If busty the six moons vest may not work as well. If you're male with bad shoulders, my apologies! :D I have a smaller version of the GG with ul load. The Atom pack might be another to consider as well.
