I love how people are acting like this is a new thought. People have been saying this for literally a decade (you can find an article from 2009 talking about this). This is not a new take. Derek Jeter was undoubtedly a great player and anyone who says he was not is a fool. He deserves credit for being able to play shortstop for 20 years, but the advanced stats show that he was not a good defensive shortstop and should not have won 5 gold gloves. If you don't believe in those advanced stats because they are for nerds that don't understand baseball, fine. Let's compare Jeter to the man that actually should have won his gold glove award in 2005, Jack Wilson. In 2005, Derek Jeter had more errors, lower fielding percentage, created less double plays and less assists than Jack Wilson. Now let's do this again in 2006, but compare him to Michael Young (one of the few shortstops Jeter is considered better defensively by advanced stats). Jeter had more errors, lower fielding percentage, less assists and less double plays than a shortstop that the advanced stats say is worse defensively than Jeter. I guarantee you could do this every year Derek Jeter won a gold glove. Also, don't you dare argue the eye test. Have you ever noticed that Jeter's iconic fielding plays (the flip, the jump throw, the dive into the crowd, etc.) occurred in the late 90s and early 2000s? Otherwise known as the years where Jeter did not win a gold glove. No matter how you look at it, whether you use advanced stats, basic stats or even just watch the games, Jeter did not deserve his gold gloves. Derek Jeter is still a great player, his hitting more than made up for his defensive shortcomings and he deserved his silver sluggers. However, his "winning attitude" doesn't change his overrated defense.

Gold Gloves are just popularity contests which really does a disservice to the guys who manage to play a decade in the majors despite hitting .220 with no power. They deserve some recognition of the fact that they are valuable and help their team. Jeters lack of an arm made him play shallow and his range was super limited. A-Rod was a significantly better fielder in the years leading up to him joining the Yankees and doesn't get enough credit for not making a fuss over moving to 3rd

Awards, like in any other industry, can be political in the sports world. Jeter's HOF credentials were about compiling numbers over a long period of time. Although, he did lead the league in hits twice and runs scoring once, Jeter was never an MVP or batting champion. He didn't start an all-star game until Nomar and A-Rod weren't available. He was never considered the best player in the game at any point, by any metric. The writers had to give him something to justify all the praise he got for winning championships (which are TEAM accomplishments). So, they were left with Gold Gloves to award him, none of which he deserved. In fact, after being merely an average defensive shortstop for the first half of his career, he was well below-average for the rest. But his ego wouldn't allow him to switch positions, which could have helped to team. So much for the theory "he was all about winning". When you give him one GG, let alone five, you're diminishing the value of the award.

@@markmacintyre5628 HOF 3K Hits: Other than Jeter, there are only 31 players with 3,000+ hits. Pujols is active, 3 players eligible for the HOF soon AROD (2021), Beltré (2023) and Ichiro (2025). The ONLY players NOT in the HOF are Rafael Palmeiro (use of p-ed´s) and Pete Rose (gambling scandal). The other 25 are ALL in the HOF.
HOF 300 AVG: Other than Jeter, there are 184 "slap hitters" in history, players with a .300+ batting average. Miggie, Altuve, Trout, Cano, Votto, LeMahieu and Blackmon are active. Half of them played from 1880 to 1919, when baseball wasn´t even a job. Still, 20% (40) of them ar NOT in the HOF for a reason (which I would not consider "a lot" as you stated). "Big Names" like Shoeless Joe Jackson (part of the Black Sox scandal), Nomar Garciaparra (injury prone career), Todd Helton (playing in Coors Field at home stacks the stats) or Manny Ramirez (a pathetic teammate) are PROOF that stats, playing in a big team and talent are NOT ENOUGH to get in the HOF.
Carlos Correa is having a good career. But those kind of antics (talking about a retired player who was at his prime when you were learning how to read) are exactly the kind of things that help you NOT get in the HOF ballot. Maybe he´s pissed because compared to Correa, by this time in his career, Jeter had 418 more hits, 26 more doubles, 20 more triples, 50 more walks, 102 more stolen bases, 277 more runs, Or maybe it´s the fact that Correa only has ONE more RBI than Jeter at this stage of his career. I don´t know, how about it´s because Jeter was averaging .320 and Correa is .277, or Jeter´s .392 OBP against Correa´s.356 OBP. Or maybe it´s Jeter being voted for Top 10 MVP players in 4 of 5 and Correa only 1 of 3 nominations. Or maybe it´s Jeter going to 4 All Star Games and Correa only to 2. Perhaps it´s just the 4 World Series Rings against Correa´s 1 or that WS MVP in 2000. I have no idea. The funny thing is Jeter hadn´t won any Golden Gloves yet, good thing he was just average. God knows what the Yankees would have done with an elite SS... LMAO!

Jeter win his first cause ARod moved to 3rd. 2002-2003 was Arod the winner and ARod wont it because Vizquel went to SanFran.

Vizquel was absolutely fantastic. I watched him play 3rd base for Texas when he was 42 years old. He caught a one hop bullet with his bare hand, unbelievable.

Not hating, just telling the truth. "The truth" is more about the people receiving it than the person telling it. Doesn't care about emotions or past or present. The truth is the truth. Pretty simple.

No! Didn't you see him? Big guy, ever alert, tremendous vertical leap, good speed, flying flat oout into the stands at full tilt, sure-handed and leader of an excellent defense with the strongest and most accurate arm in the game. Oh, and the flip was genius. Correa ain't got that game. He's just digging his hole deeper.
