Part of a series of animated videos that helps explain the volcanism in the Easter Caribbean. The series was commissioned under The Volcano Ready Communities Project (VRCP) St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Excellent animation. What is the explanation for the formation of the island of Barbados that is not volcanic?
Barbados was formed along what is knows as an accretionary prism/wedge. It was formed as the top layer of material is pushed upwards when oceanic and continental plates collide (subduction zone). These sediments are scraped off the top of the downgoing oceanic crustal plate and are added to the edge of the continental plate.

And what about the non vulcanic islands? Where did they come from? On Antigua you can sometimes see in the rock fosils of sealive, so, this used to be the seebed, now pushed up.....?
