- An AirAsia X flight to Malaysia from Perth, Australia, was forced to turn back Sunday after the A330 aircraft began shaking due to what the airline called a "technical issue." CNN's Dave Briggs reports.
When the plane landed I would become a permanent resident of Australia

Panic will however cause plenty of problems once on the ground since that's where people want to go outside as soon as possible ignoring any risks.

How unprofessional is it to tell you passengers that their survival depends on THEIR OWN cooperation?
These people can't do sht about it, the least you can do is not telling them they are at a high risk of crashing.
People who could've just had some weird feelings about boarding planes, now are scared for life of boarding a plane again.
There's nothing wrong with telling people to corroborate, that's fine. Corroboration is also things like "Stay in your seats" "Fasten your belts" etc. etc. etc.
But asking people to pray? Absolutely insanity.
Him asking people to pray is a clear sign he is under trained. The planes are designed to be able to run with one engine and he should know that and be able to operate calmly under stressful conditions. He shouldve reassured everyone rather than freak them out.
They’re trained extensively and the shaking isn’t “normal” for one engine being out so there must have been a lot more happening to the extent he was probably very certain things may go wrong quickly . I agree asking them to pray isn’t very professional though! The best comment to make is probably: “everything is fine! This is normal!” so they can at least be reassured even if the plane is actually on its way down :)

That's what they do. The plane I once flew on caught a fire on board, we returned to the hotel for 2 nights whilst they were fixing the plane (which had caught the fire) and then we were put back on to the same plane..

The engine was shut down, however the vibration was caused by the engine's front fan being unbalanced because a blade broke off, so while the fan blades continue to spin, it also vibrates heavily.

Very unprofessional of the pilot to do so for that exact reason. Nothing good happens when people are panicked and he just shook up everybody onboard the plane. He could keep his cool too, Chesley Sullenberger did it when he piloted his plane into the Hudson as many other pilots have also done in emergency situations.

that sounds like some hostage type of stuff.
This clip randomly turned up in my feed. I didn’t know it existed and I was stunned when I realised that I was the air traffic controller on duty when it declared the emergency. It had not long reached top of climb and was around 200nm NW of Perth (YPPH). Luckily, it was still on radar and in VHF coverage. The aircraft was immediately cleared to turn as required and track directly to Perth. Despite handing off most other aircraft to alternate frequencies, the incident played out in a calm and generally uneventful manner from the perspective of anyone listening to the radio transmissions. We had little knowledge of the fear on board the aircraft. Kudos to the flight crew for getting the aircraft safely back on the ground. Personally, if I was a passenger on board the flight, I’d have been mightily unimpressed at the suggestion to pray. Not only does it give the appearance of the flight crew being distracted from the task at hand, the announcement would have increased anxiety levels in the cabin off the charts, which had the potential to do far more damage than good.
Wrong! The entire crew and passengers prayed when facing possible death, this is the best thing to do. God bless the pilot.

Pilot got them in safe thank God. I fly a lot so it's just one of those things that can happen to anyone. I was on a flight from Korea in 1998 and till this day was the most turbulent flight I have ever been on the drops were so deep your stomach was In your throat and on top of that the cabinets came open stuff was flying everywhere. The terror was unreal. The lil Korean lady on side of me was crying so bad I had to comfort her. Flying is still one of the safest ways to travel. We all have to die one day just dont think about it travel enjoy your life.

Actually, my doctor actually prayed with me in the Theatre for my first operation on February 14, 2007. After praying, there was this assurance i had that I was going to be alright. The fact that a surgeon prays does not mean he isn't capable, it means he acknowledges that God giveth grace to the humble.

I expect reassurances from the pilot who has my life in his hands. At the least, you lie and give people some hope.
If your child was terrified, do you tell them you are terrified as well and to pray for their life? Or do you provide reassurance that, “everything will be okay”… even if you are unsure yourself.

Just experienced this on a ryainair flight, safe to say never flying again. I was walking to the toilet and I’m not lying when I say this I got launched into the air about 2 foot, scariest thing ive ever expiernced and I’m only young, praying no one expiriences this ever ❤
I was on a plane with the worst turbulence ive ever experienced. I thought we were going down but kept a brave face for those around me. The pilot came on and said "ladies and gentlemen, just think of this like your riding a mechanical bull." I died laughing, that was exactly what i needed to hear in that moment.

If it's enough for the pilot to be scared then quite a lot and it is truly time to sh1t bricks. They are used to it more than you think including being highly trained how to fly and land with engine failures before ever getting near a passenger craft.

If your pilot sounds scared or is screaming, that is the one time you can get scared. Unless of course…you were sitting in the plane one second, then your violently falling towards the ground the next, that would also be a valid reason to be scared.
None actually. Each crucial and structural bolt is screwed on with a specific locking torque requirement and has a factor of safety that can withstand these type of situations. The plane landed safely for a reason.

The offset of balance from the blade missing caused the shaking. Note to any pilots seeing this video in shock, if this happens on one of your engines reduce throttle to the engines, nose up a bit and use your rudder to keep the plane straight. These planes are incredibly resilient and even if you lose one or even two engines there are ways to manage a safe landing.
