The last time a basketball player didn’t know Lebron James name
Really don't like AAU, but it is part of big time basketball. I remember a guy telling me of LeBron James. Commented that he was literally a man playing against little boys. Told me it was the most amazing thing he'd ever seen. And he went on to live up to all this hype placed upon him at 16 years old. Incredible.
Yeah its wild I remember being like 7 years old seeing Lebron on ESPN while at St. Mary's. To think he's still in the league.
I still have a CD rom here at home on which my friend copied some St. Vincent broadcast highlights from 2002. I can't believe that we almost at the end of that journey
AAU was much different at that time. It was still about basketball.
I remember watching him earlier on and was like he didn't need to be out there anymore I remember some high school games he didn't even play it was no need
I heard about him at a Midwest football camp thebyear before he was on the cover. They said if he'd come to the camp husvteam would've won but he was even better at basketball. I thought they were full of it lol
This is so fucking insane looking back , nobody had a clue what he was gonna do holy shit

The amazing thing is LeBron did not lose his mind no matter how much money came his way. He should go into every sports hall of fame just for staying completely sane.
Facts
He thinks he is better than Jordan…He definitely lost his mind😂😂😂
@@BEEJAYCAPONE2 Depends on the topic. Allen Iverson was a bigger cultural influence than Jordan. It was Allen Iverson that dragged Hip Hop into the NBA over the half-dead bodies of the kicking and screaming NBA executive officers. Not Michael Jordan. LeBron and Jordan should not even be compared. Remember Jordan went to college and won a championship. LeBron was a child when he appeared on the national stage due to a magic trick by the long dead Harry Houdini. The NBA did not see him coming until he was already here. Can we just stop to appreciate they had jersey numbers higher than 100 in this game
Do you not play aau basketball? , a lot of tournaments have numbers over 100
I went back and looked at my stats from this camp.Suprisingly ( which I didn't remember) Kendrick Perkins was one of the top 3 players ( rated stat wise over Lebron). He led the camp in rebounding and also had a 29 pt game. The local Jersey paper sang his praises
Not too surprising, all nba players even bench warmers had crazy numbers during high school. Most of the time are simply because they're just too good for the competition and in Perkin's case already too big for the rest of his class.
And now we are stuck with terrible takes every am on the Ocho
Sorry his basketball was plates of food
and now he is breathing dumb load on the mic every morning.
Jokic would have put up better numbers than Perkins at that camp at the same age.
The player Lebron is talking to at 0:25 is Lenny Cooke. He was actually the #2 ranked high school player in the country at that camp ahead of Lebron (Melo was ranked #1). He was projected by several sources to be a sure 1st round draft pick out of high school but due to a reported attitude and work ethic problem, he went undrafted, revoking his college eligibility in the process. He accepted a 350k advance from an agent to represent him for the draft during his senior year, leading many to believe the main cause for his attitude problem as he acted as though he already made it and could do whatever he pleased. He played in the D league and the Celtics summer league team before finishing out his career overseas. Truly a sad story as he had the skills and potential to be great.
Very true. When talent in ANY field doesn't work hard....it gets wasted.

Craziest part about this is that LeBron led the state in receiving touchdowns the year before and then quit football. He would have broke all of the nfl receiving records if he stuck with football, there’s no doubt. I worked for the Orlando magic for a decade and one of my co-workers graduated from SVSM with him. So whenever Cleveland would play us(we had some heated playoff games) LeBron would make time to talk to and hang out with us. Once he was lifting weights but not really lifting, just kinda seeing how much he could lift. He put 315 on the bar and benched it 10x like it was 150 lbs.
To this day, I believe there is no better athlete in the world than a SG or SF in the NBA.
Hes just was bigger, stronger, AND faster than EVERYONE else.

LeBron was not discovered at ABCD. Everyone knew he was going into the camp which is why the LeBron vs Lenny game was probably the most hyped camp game ever. yea it's true my dads from akron and said that going to watch lebrons high school games were more important to the city than seeing the Cavs was at that time
Imagine not knowing you were playing against the next NBA all time leading scorer and arguably the next GOAT
What ppl don't realize was statistically Lebron's ABCD teammate Leon Powe had better stats ( 20pts/ game 9.9 rebounds) than Lebron.Powe was a MAN.I sat next to him in the stands between games and this dude had hands like a 40 yr old mechanic.
Powe was more like a grown man but his skills never really translated.

@@alexanderrosa8481 If he didn't get injured he would be the solid veteran influence a lot of teams need now.I met him at ABCD Camp when he was 16 or 17 yrs old and he carried himself much older even then.Real good guy.
Powe had a dunk at Gym Rats Midnight Madness - in South Jersey - where he took the kid up with him, the dude hanging on him, and hammered it down. One of the first times I'd seen a high schooler dunk with a player trying to pull him away from dunking; went up like the hanger on wasn't even there. He was a high school junior at the time. He had NBA size, strength and athletic ability as a high school underclassman. Also dominating at ABCD.
I didn't see Bron play back then, but I remember being in gyms those days. From early 90s to early 2000s. That look is over. Just the uniforms and how the gym looks in these plder videos brings back good memories.

Lebrun wasn’t discovered at 16. He was scouted since junior high school. By 16-17 he was already known. He was on Pay per view high school games in his last year
that's honestly not true. I remember senior year my AAU Rashad Carruth having the hype wagon (class of 2000). Matter of fact, Lebron wasn't even ranked until this camp (much like most players in HS)... Being known & being ranked are 2 totally different things. Big facts
Wrong 🤦🏽♂️
@@AveMcreehes right bron was known since at least 99’
Depends what you mean by "discovered". He went to an AAU National finals in eighth grade, so he was at least somewhat known by age 14/15.
@@AveMcree Rashad Carruth was actually class of 2001. I was living in Columbus OH at that time. Lebron had gotten publicity around Ohio when his team won a state championship his freshman year (2000) - Maverick Carter was the star but LeBron got a lot of buzz. The SI cover and ESPN stuff didn't happen until his junior year, but it all started to build when he was a sophomore. I was at Battelle Hall when Oak Hill (with Rashad Carruth, Desagna Diop, and Billy Edelin) played SVSM. Oak Hill narrowly won, but it was crystal clear to everyone that LeBron was by far the best player on the court. Even as a sophomore, he was physically mature and his game was incredibly mature. That night it wasn't obvious that LeBron would become arguably the NBA GOAT, but it was plain as day that he would never set foot on a college campus.
He wasn't discovered so much as the summer after his soph year he led the usa U17 team to gold at the Pan American games(named mvp) then got invited to MJ's summer league in Chicago and nba players were saying he could play in the nba already. That is when the hype really started and then he got on the cover of SI shortly after.
