Woodturning - Gnarly Old Firewood - What Lurks Beneath?

- I am still learning woodturning and today I took a bit of gnarly old fire wood out the fire basket and was pleasantly surprised with what was beneath.
I still need to work on my technique as I turn wood but there is definitely improvement since my first wood bowl. The wood lathe is fast becoming my friend!
As always, I am happy to take feedback. And if you know what wood it is, please let me know 😊
Also, today I chopped and processed some yew tree blanks so I will have something a bit nicer to work with than firewood - although to be fair if the result is like this I'll be happy.

Ben's Got Wood
A bit about me - my name is Ben and this channel is documenting my very first attempts at woodturning. As a beginner, I'm eager to explore the art of shaping wood into beautiful, functional pieces through the mesmerising process of woodturning.
Through trial and error, I'm learning valuable lessons and gaining insights that will shape my skills. If you are a seasoned woodturner, I'd appreciate any help and guidance along the way - I know I have a lot to learn!

Here are some of my other videos! - • Woodturning - Shedding...
Thank you for being a part of this incredible experience!
Please note my videos are for entertainment purposes only and are not meant as instructional videos. I am not a professional woodturner and some of the techniques I use are trial and error and probably not correct - in fact I'm surprised I still have all my fingers! I hope you enjoy the videos! - Zábava
My First bowls Didn't look that good when i started turning. Great job🎉🎉
Thank you so much - that’s very kind of you to say.
Keep turnin' and you'll continue learnin'! You have a nice piece here. The rim style is my favorite-- the curve must flow! 😁 👍
Thanks for the positive comments - I am about to do another bowl this weekend so will see what improvement la I can make. I need to get a bandsaw so that I can prepare the blanks a bit better and get a larger one on the lathe.
Looks nice
Thanks Tony - have a great weekend 👍🏻
It will be a good idea to saw it down with a saw or or chainsaw
Yeah good point. It was a bit clunky and made the whole bench shake. I need to lock the bench down somehow! The next blanks I have prepared are a bit more balanced so hopefully a bit easier!
It might help by putting some weight on the bench
I’ve since fixed the bench to the back wall and it is loads better! Thank you 🙏
If your lathe can turn down the speed do it when yor are sanding
Thanks for the tip - can I ask why that is please?
I dont know but it works really well for me
@@BensGotWood So your sandpaper doesn't get real hot and wear out way too fast. If your lathe is 3-speed, slowest speed is best for sanding and will give you a better surface. Also, the dust doesn't go quite so far.
That makes sense! Thanks for the advice. 👍🏻
