Event Notes:
Thunderstorm was part of a "back door cold front" - A cold front that comes in from the North and East, as opposed to the normal North Western fronts. These are rare, but can sometimes cause severe "pop up" thunderstorms.
NY has been in a mini drought this Spring. We have not had any considerable rain since April. So there is no moisture in the air or in most of the top soils. So any thunderstorms that form will need most of the help from moisture in the upper atmosphere.
National Weather Service issued a Thunderstorm Warning at around 6pm for Kings County (Brooklyn) and Queens County (Queens) to be in effect until 7:30pm. The storm was observed further North to have small hail, damaging winds, and dangerous cloud to ground lightning.
Prior to the walk, I have determined that the storm should hit Brooklyn along a line of North to South, from Greenpoint to Coney Island. I have decided to take 15th Avenue in Borough Park.
This area has a train station and some apartment buildings in the event I need to duck inside. It also has some tall warehouses to protect from a wind wall and hail. A tall warehouse also reduces the risk of a ground lightning strike, although not to much - due to heavy tree concentration.
The storm started out strong and looked to be put together very well, but unfortunately could not stay together, due to reasons stated earlier. There is not much moisture in the air or ground due to lack of water from no rain for some weeks now. Also, the storm moved just to the East of me by only a mile or two. No winds were experienced, other than a few strong breezes. There was no hail. Rain was moderate for a very short period of time, and did not help any dry soil situations. We still need measurable rain.
The only item from the storm experienced was some good lightning at times. There were a number of observed CG's (Cloud to Ground Lightning) with 2 close CG's experienced by 57th Street and 15th Avenue. The 2nd strike was close enough to put static through the wireless mic if you listen carefully at that point.
Once the storm weakened, it continued to move South, and continued to feature some cloud to cloud lightning and thunder, with some light rain.

Yes, mama nature can get nasty. Time stamping is a good touch. In that kind of weather glad your doing the walk instead of me. I never minded going out in the rain as long as its not pouring sideways. At that point even an umbrella doesn't help that much except for the top of your head. But lightning I don't like walking around in. A very informative walk S.W. Where will your next journey take us. We'll stay tuned...47😊
