Suarez gave a great demonstration of how players value their national team. He didn't even think about the consequences of being sent off (that was still young Suarez, but imagine Uruguay needing to play the next game without prime Suarez), but he quickly tried to save his team.

@Julius Briggs sportsmanship is a very beautiful concept, but in moments like these, nobody who truly felt any inkling of passion towards the shirt would EVER be a "good sportsman". and if you're going to damn Suarez for his handball, damn the dive that got Ghana that free kick in the first place. diving should also be, and is poor sportsmanship.

    • @cassiusdalcazarosta8010
      @cassiusdalcazarosta8010 Pƙed rokem +33

@Julius Briggs Nope, Suarez was sent off and Ghana given a penalty, as the Laws of the Game would dictate. The fact that they missed that penalty cannot be blamed to Suarez as he didn't impede in the penalty kick in anyway whatsoever. He gave Ghana the opportunity to advance through the WC but they wasted it, and you cannot blame that on Suarez.
The fact that there are bad characters in football makes it more entertaining in my opinion as long as they dont do crimes (Mason Greenwood, Benjamin Mendy). I dont want a perfect game; I want an exciting and dramatic one!

I feel like people from other places dont understand the level of passion that football rises here. I'm not asking you to either love or hate SuĂĄrez, but to understand that this play came from the same place of your heart that makes you say "I would literally do anything to watch my country in the semis", and Suarez was just another fan that happened to be a player.

I'm from Uruguay, and this moment is still probably one of the best of my life. here in Uruguay I'd say we value football more than anywhere else on Earth. it's tied to our identity as a country. Football proves we exist to the wider world. This moment of self-sacrifice from Suarez is one of the maximum expressions of that sentiment I think I've ever seen. I've heard the stories of the player that came back from the dead to play, of our Olympic teams sleeping on park benches, of Obdulio Varela's rousing speech. But I'd never seen those moments. This was completely different. I saw with my own eyes what la garra charrĂșa really was, and ever since then I've loved football. I was 5 years old when this happened. I'm 17 now and I'm looking forward to seeing Uruguay-Ghana again in Qatar, and I hope it'll live up to the history the two teams share, ever since that fateful night in South Africa. I disagree with you bro.
That ref didn’t favor Ghana as u all say, the only place I can say there really wasn’t a foul was the kick that led to the hand ball.. that match was fair throughout and frankly speaking, I have watched that match for more than 50 times and I continue to watch it anytime I feel bored. To to tell you the truth Ghana played better than you did and if it was a neutral game throughout Ghana would have won.
If u go back and watch the game again u will see ghana was the better side. Ghana played a beautiful game. The Uruguayan went through hell. And ghana picked up the game from the 30m throughout until the last whistle wen they lost. Ya it’s the fact.. go back and watch it again..
And talking about Suarez, I understand him
Wen u watch the game u can see every player on the field wanted to die for their nation to win,
Suarez was so much in the game that not even rules could stop him. At that point he acted unaware 😊it just came out of the blue there was no option leftđŸ’Ș he was their hero 👍
We as Ghanaians or Africans acted or continue to act out of emotions
Imagine if we were in their shoes or imagine if GYAN had converted that kick. The Uruguayan would have said we cheated

.. but in all that was history and it will continue to be from generation to generation.

I am South African, and lived in Ghana for a few years when I was younger. So this team at this world cup meant so much to me. My father and I were at all of their games. I don't think I ever cried as much as I did after that penalty shootout. The worst part is that I was right behind the goal where Suarez stopped the goal and Gyan missed his penalty. I can still recall the sense of injustice and agony that I felt to this day. I remember my dad showing me all of the newspaper headlines and the pictures after the game the next day, and being so pissed off for the entire day ( I would play the FIFA world cup game and put the AI down to it's lowest and score as many goals as I could past them, being the salty child that I was). Ghana were meant to make it to the semis, but didn't, and the ball was a few inches away from crossing the line and sending the whole continent into a frenzy, but that moment was taken away from us by Luis Suarez. Looking back on it now to call him a cheat was a bit harsh, but you can imagine the salty tears of an entire continent and how that played into the perception of Uruguay and Suarez. Especially considering that Ghana essentially became the adopted home team of the tournament in the knockout stage, everyone I knew wanted them to win.

I remember crying when USA lost to Ghana, which really stung for me. But, I remember learning about my Spanish heritage and I came to enjoy watching the Spain with my grandmother (who was born to Spanish immigrants) and I was so happy when Spain won the World Cup.
A lasting moment I had from that Spain team was when 4 weeks after the tournament ended, my older sister got the autographs of Iker Casillas (who became my all time favorite player) and Raul Albiol (along with Jose Mourinho).
2010 was such a fun tournament and I'm grateful to have witnessed it.

You should tell this story from the perspective of Uruguay. It's embarrassing, but it had been so long since we had any deep World Cup runs or relative success in the international stage that people celebrated in the streets as if we had won a title.
Uruguay wouldn't be what it is today in terms of international football if it hadn't been for that moment. Players consider the national team as an opportunity and a privilege and we are known as a competitive side.
A whole nation obsessed with football had been relegated from the very top of world football to at best a remote league where foreign clubs could find talented players to sign for cheap at a young age. Now Luis SuĂĄrez puts on the shirt of Nacional with pride for all the world to see.
For an entire country whose cultural identity has been closely linked with football for over a century, it felt like a waking up from a nightmare.

Anyway, it was that tournament that kickstart my football fan life. I actually decided to be a football fan cos high schoolmates around me always followed football, mainly English clubs e.g. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, or other popular Spanish clubs e.g. Real Madrid, Barcelona etc.
I chose to support Uruguay, because, for a bit of a stupid reason actually😅, Uruguay was the first to lift the World Cup. Although Brasil won the most World Cups in the end, I felt that Brasil alr had a lot of supporters, and enough attention, around the world. So I looked past popular teams e.g. England, Brasil, Argentina, Portugal, Italy, Germany, France, even Japan. I decided, Uruguay(this team really needs more love & attention it deserves for its illustrious footballing history, srsly!) will be the team I support.
It's 12 years since. I've never regretted my decision to support Uruguay. Uruguay noma!
    Btw, I'm from Singapore. ;)

Then on top of that celebrated on the side when Gyan missed (which is not his fault, every player has missed big penalties, Messi, Ronaldo etc..) , then lastly had the audacity to call it “the hand of God” in the follow up interviews lol.
