  • /mu/ is a 4chan board that is there to discuss music but ultimately turns into a complete mess in any thread. Today I'm taking a look at the albums that they deem to be "essential" and ranking them in a tier list!

In part two of our journey into /mu/ core we talk about some more classic albums such as The Glow Pt. 2 by The Microphones, Deathconciousness by Have a Nice Life, and Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin. We also talk about some albums that I didn't expect to be considered /mu/ core such as Since I Left You by The Avalanches and Untrue by Burial. And of course we talk about some albums that I haven't heard before such as The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails, Homogenic by Bjork, Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth and Souvlaki by Slowdive.
Once again, making this video was a lot of fun and I'm totally down for a part 3 if you guys are! But first, lets dive into some shoegaze.. So if you know any albums that you'd call an "essential shoegaze album" then put it in the comments below!

The problem with the Downward Spiral take is that its a concept album and some of the songs are meant to be a bit over the top and dramatic. He does mention the production but he definitely doesnt do the album justice in how unique and good it sounds. It hasnt aged a day since release.

I COMPLETELY agree with your take on Souvlaki and Loveless. While it's a pioneer for the shoegaze genre, I find Loveless to be pretty one note and not as dynamic. On the other hand, Souvlaki takes the concepts mbv laid out and takes them to the next level. I'm sure people find it to be a lot more pop when compared to other, more sophisticated shoegaze albums, but I can't not vibe to what Slowdive is putting down across the entire project. There's hardly a dull moment and the tracks don't blend together like they do in Loveless. A+ take my man

Untrue by burial is a stunning album and one of my favourites here but I don’t think you can get it unless you’re British tbh. I’m sure there are cases of Americans loving it but the way it paints a picture of grimy late night barely illuminated cold streets is something special. So glad Ive finally found someone else who prefers Souvlaki to Loveless, I guess its vibe just suits me so much more. Loveless is like the atmosphere of a fierce storm outside your house while youre under your covers. Souvlaki is like the atmosphere of a 3am cigarrete looking out the window taking in the city at night.
Edit: Also since everyone else and their dog has recommended Nowhere by Ride I think Its Immaterial by Black Marble is also a great Shoegaze album, nowhere near on the same level as the big three but a very underrated laid back sound that definetely takes more inspiration from Souvlaki than from Loveless

I want to fight you on Mezzanine but I actually respect people’s opinions on music so you get the pass.
I also understand why you feel it’s pretty one note, it’s very specific moody, and it actually took me longer than I’d admit to get into since I was obsessed with Heligoland for ages prior to really enjoying Mezz, most of their albums are more up beat than Mezz too, Blue Lines has so many bangers comparatively. I just like melting into Mezz a lot more. And Protection too is just as spacey.

In regards to your SAW comments, Aphex Twin may have more experimental records, but I think his debut is his most consistent. It’s easily his most influential and iconic statement of the 90s, but I also feel like it lays the groundwork for the rest of his records but introducing his strange personality to the public. A lot of electronic music producers didn’t really have that strong of an identity around that time. In that sense, I’d compare it to Ziggy stardust in how it’s probably not their most bold album, but it’s the best feat of songwriting and track-for-track consistency.

I'm only 30 but I did listen to a lot of Aphex Twin growing up so I came in around the middle of his heyday, i suppose.
My understanding, half remembering articles I've read over the years, is that first off, the selected works are catchy.
but the biggest impact is Richard's use and manipulation of the technology at the time.
Basically, he was making sounds with machines that shouldn't be able to make the sounds they were making, and he was using established e-instruments in a way that no one was thinking of.
I'm not sure if that's why people rank it high, or if it's just the catchiness.
But the reason I was always taught is that it was probably the largest leap forward in electronic technique and manipulation that we'll see until they make quantum instruments or something.
And he just happened to record his practice and experiments and that's what the selected works represent. Like watching a documentary about someone trying to learn how to make a movie but then they end up making a banger.

Maybe not an essential shoegaze album, but I will always adore “Variations On…” by Machine+. It’s so headache inducing in this hazy layer of fuzz that covers one of the most sad and personal messages I’ve ever heard. It talks of gender dysphoria, homosexuality, anxiety, and depression in extraordinarily blunt ways. It’s themes are not hidden under any sort of metaphor, it’s right there (I would recommend reading the lyrics alongside the album though otherwise it’s hard to understand). The choruses are these emotional yelps of simplistic dialogue that feels like a battle cry before fighting your issues or problems. A very unknown and underrated album? Yes. But it would mean a lot to see you cover it.

So here are some cool shoegaze (and a few adjacent) albums that I didn’t see mentioned (with the exception of going blank again):
    Adorable-Against Perfection
    Just. Fucking. Amazing!
Those are the three words that best describe this album. It is in my top 3 favorites and I love the songs. It can go from happy to sad and anything in between. The songs almost take on different sounds and meanings depending how you feel. It is very post punk influenced in sound and it is the perfect combination of jangle pop and shoegaze. There isn’t a weak song on this album. Adorable’s sophomore album Fake is also pretty damn good, but nowhere close as good as Against perfection.
    Top tracks: The whole thing
    Curve: Doppelgänger
This is just one of the coolest sounding albums I’ve even come across. It is just spacey and psychedelic as it is danceable. It’s an amazing feel-good type of album.
Top tracks: Horror Head, Clipped, Already yours
    Nothing-Guilty of Everything
This album is just a good one for when you are feeling down. It just hits deep. It is somewhat metal (don’t know what genre of metal you would call it) and post hardcore influenced. It’s one of my favorites. All Nothing albums are great and worth a listen. This one just has the greatest songs on it.
Top tracks: Guilty of Everything, Somersault, Dig, Bent Nail
    Nothing-The Great Dismal
Nothing is just such a cool band that they have two albums on here. The songs on this are great for any mood. This really has a strong post hardcore and metal influence in it, but also some classic indie sounds (jangly guitar in Catch a Fade and stuff). It can be heavy, happy, and dark sounding. This album is just super addicting. I can’t get enough of it.
Top tracks- Bernie Sanders (not about the old guy-Domenic Palermo, 2021 Union Transfer, Philadelphia), April Ha Ha, Catch a Fade, Just A Story, Famine Asylum, the rest of the album
    Ride-Going Blank Again
This one is another feel-good album. It is more indie pop influenced then their debut Nowhere, and it has some cool vocal harmony. It has a more pop sound to it but it isn’t bad. It is an essential imo.
Top tracks: Leave them all behind, Mouse Trap, OX4, twisterella
    Dead Horse One-Season of Mist
This album is some really cool material from more modern times (I think it was from 2016, for shoegaze albums anything past 2000 is modern for me). It is a really cool combination of neo psych and shoegaze. It creates an extravagant atmosphere. It can go from energetic to slow and droning in a perfect way.
    Top tracks: Mantis, disconnected, Today
    Autolux-Future Perfect
This album is more noise pop than it is shoegaze, but whatever. I mean, a good album is a good album and most shoegaze overlaps with noise pop anyways. This album is a fusion of indie rock and noise pop. It has a unique sound that just works out perfectly.
Top tracks: Here Comes Everybody, Turnstile Blues, Sugarless
A place to bury strangers- Exploding Head
This album is an interesting meeting point between the genres of post punk, noise rock, noise pop, and shoegaze. It is very aggressive in its sound and really doesn’t have a weak song. They are all pretty good. Their self titled album is also worth a listen.
Top tracks: Keep Slipping Away, Ego Death, I Lived My Life to Stand in the Shadow of Your Heart
I might expand on this tomorrow but here are some cool albums. Probably going to write about the band Medicine or something idk.
