Its a great addition to any small farm, or homestead, and on top of being used for gardening, its also great for digging trenches!
The plow should be adjusted so that the bottom of the moldboard is almost parallel to the bottom of the implement at digging depth. The tractor will pull it easier, and the plow will turn over more dirt/grass in a single pass. There are a lot of plowing how-to's on youtube - the same principle applies to this small Brinley as it does to larger single bottom plows for big tractors.

No, it's not, However I said right at the start of the video that I had it cranked up so I could use it to cut a trench.

Good review of the cute little Brinly plow and little tractor! I understand why you had it adjusted for the work you were doing, I also agree that in it's intended use for plowing soil, the landside bottom of the plow should be running parallel to the furrow's bottom. Plowing at that unatural angle puts huge stress on the plow frame, which could result in a 'sprung' plow......everyone is an expert are they not?......retired Michigan dairy farmer here.....ps... now I gotta get me one too ! lol

I am impressed with the performance of the tractor you are using and the plow is equally as great at plowing and did a fine job with cutting that area you are going to put down a line in.
Its all about making due with less here are Farpoint Farm. These little garden tractors are quite capable when properly equipped.

It may be your intention but the landslide should sit flat in the furrow and slide against the vertical uncut earth. If of course that is adjustable to do that.

One thing that's important is that needs a good heavy duty lawn tractor to pull it, try to pull that behind a lawn tractor and it will eat the transaxle fast. The Husqvarna GT52 is about perfect
With your plow if you go faster it will be able to turn the dirt all the way over then when you make your next pass on the left side the dirt will go into the other trench and mix it in really good. Hope that made sense and that is helps

We have a Husqvarna GT54LS, and love it. It really gets the job done around the property. The locking diff, and big rear tires really makes a difference!
Have a brinly pull bucket...addef drill motor to raise and lower it and move gravel. Also added husquvarna front bucket.. 20 hp engine is std in all these units

That plow share is way to lose. I see your digging a trench, but don't let people believe that the correct way to use a moldboard, it is way out of adjustment. The tail bar should sit level down in the furrow. If the tip of the share is set right it will pull itself into the ground and level off, downward pressure is not needed.

Yes, I have it set at a full rake in order to dig to the depth of 8 inches. Your right, I should have pointed that out.
So many critics - dude says its primary use is something else. I'm sure the world is a better place now thought that you had to tell them this dude was doing something differently sheeez.I too would now buy one of these and use it, it would be great for running conduit, of even water line. Awesome tool, doesn't matter if it wasn't specifically designed to dig trenches, the fact of the matter is it did what You wanted it to do. If someone told me to grab a shovel and dig a trench like that, I'd be digging their grave instead lol.

I love this thing. Yes, it wasn't made to cut a trench, but it sure does a great job of it! I also use it for it's intended purpose, and it works great at that too!
The moldboard plow might save your tiller from being severely damaged. I struck a ledge with my 6' PTO driven tiller, nearly damaging it. I'm going to make a 3 point attachment tractor hook-up for my moldboard plow. I would never put a tiller into new soil again without first breaking it up with a plow.

We have hard clay for soil, so we had to adapt this tiny thing to a three point hitch on a much bigger tractor
Works great! I am looking to purchase a new Husqvarna TS348XD here in a few weeks to add to my fleet. I manage a big housing development and other properties as well year round. I have always purchased Garden Tractors and not lawn mowers as they just plain work and last much longer for the investment. I have 2 GT's right now and a new in 2018 Kubota Z725 60" commercial Z turn. I always have a need for a GT. Well my good old 1986 John Deere 318 with the Onan engine is burning quite a bit of oil and is due for a rebuild or repower. My other is my 1977 IH Cub 1650 which is my do it all odd job tough little tractor. Still running strong to this day. I need a good GT for mowing in some places where its just to dangerous with s Z turn and much easier on my expensive Z turn not putting it in bad situations. For the price of the new Husky with the K66eld and the 24hp Kawasaki FR730 series for aroubd 3K is a bargain in todays world. A new JD570 is almost double that price and not worth it to me..Although they are nicer machines...its not twice tge price nicer! Lol...My only worry with the TS 348 XD is the frame but if flexing is severe and past warranty I can beef it up myself. All GTs are quite similar anyhow basically as they outsourcre tge same engines and trans and just build them and put their name on it...I would gladly pay more for the Husky if they were to add power steering and hydraulic hookups. Maybe they wilk offer it someday. I also have a Kubota RTV1100 with a curtis hydraulic snowplow and use it for all our property and others. Awesome hydraulic strong dumo bed as well. I fill it with the FEL on my Ford 3910 with stone or mulch etc all the time. Hoping tge new Husky TS treats me right and thanjs for the videos as it helped me make up my mind to buy one.
Great write up! I do wish that these GT's came with hydro ports for some smaller equipment like light FEL's or hydro dumpcarts. The K66 does have hat as an option but I've never seen one with it. I have heard about the frame flex, but at 275 hours, mine is still fine, and I've asked it to do some crazy things!
@@FarpointFarms Good to hear that your frame is holding up fine. I noticed the frame flex issue borrowing my neighbors LGT2654,,not a GT although they consider it a "Light Garden Tractor". Uneven ground you can feel the frame twisting underneath you while operating it. I needed it to finish out mowing and leaf season this year as my JD318 as I stated earlier is burning oil badly. My old IH Cub 1650 surprisingly mows very well too, but it is a shaker even with new rubber motor mounts,,its the Quietline series tractor. The aftermarket mounts are a harder material than the originals. Great mowing deck and that thing can mow down a hayfield if I wanted it to...Tons of torque in that good old Kohler cast iron 16hp K341 engine. I see why they use the old IH Cubs for pulling tractors too..the rear end in those things is darn near indestructible and was actually used in the agricultural Farmall Cub tractors. If I can maintain traction, that tractor will move it. I use it for many dozer type jobs with the front blade and it has the twin stick control as well...I have pulled the cylinder and head in the past and had the valves reground is all its had done to it in all its years and still purrs. Looking forward to my new TS model. It should be in anytime now.
Hi. Very nice vedio. I would like to ask you how to mount this on a normal lawn mower who doesn't have the pump to puch the plow down. Any suggestions?
Good video and would consider buying one of these now. I have been using a subsoiler on my regular tractor, but it doesn't clear the trench and a 3 point plow is far more than I need. I have the electric sleeve too, so this will work great for drain and irrigation line! Not sure why the couple of expert farmers here were giving you a hard time "for not using your plow properly" when you clearly indicated you were intentionally doing so and merely trying to get the deepest trench that you could and not trying to turn the earth for ag purposes. "Experts", haha. Thanks Again!
I've been a little surprised myself at the comments about its setting, but I guess I should have stated more clearly that I was using it for "alternative uses". I am happy with its performance, and maybe this spring I'll show it doing more conventional plowing.

Interesting use of the plow. Never thought of using one for a trench like that. I’ve been considering picking one up for my JD 214. I have a model 31 tiller for it but knowing that where I’ll be tilling will be virgin ground it might not be a bad idea to hit it with a plow first.
If you get one you won't regret it. I've used it for food plots, but I've used it for stuff like digging trenches to run water, power and for drainage ditches just as often.
watched a guy this pass summer use his 214 with a till to lay a drain...except he was sneaky.. probed the ground with a water.. then worked sideways with the dealer. Back up... till in line with his painted line.. lift.. pull forward..back up right next to the till spot..line up and till again.. after that.. his kid ran our and scoped the super broken ground up while daughter laid the material... went smoothly and with lil damage to the lawn.

I paid 20 bucks for a single plow that was part of a 3 blade plow from a farm tractor implement. Its a hoss though. Haven't used it yet but i will soon.
These things are going for 350 right now on amazon and I'll need one this year as we are expanding garden and need to break up gravel. Im hoping I can find a used one between now and spring.
Please, read the manual that came with the Brinly plow, set it up the way they say, adjust and operate it the way they say. They do not need any down pressure to work, even for doing a trench like in your Video.
Use it to dig your potatoes I have done it and it makes it a lot easier

At 5:55 the sod plops right back in. Is there a way to make sure the soil turns over and stays over? I bought a similar set up after watching Eric's videos (thanks for that) and I like the relatively inexpensive set up like that, But I just wish the sod would stop falling back in after the plow had gone through. I have a vid of my plowing on my channel to show how that happens.

Can my automatic john deere 100 series handle this? I got a used old one from a fella down the road, do i need tire chains or is this bad for the tranny? Can i pull it with my pick up?
I would be hesitant to do it, the transmissions are not the strongest with the 100 series. I think your truck could easily handle it, but you would have to be creative to get an adapter for the plow to your truck

After watching your video, I bought the plow but my Husqvarna 24 HP (YTH24K48) won't pull it. I am trying to break the ground for cultivating grains in the back of my large lot. I have spread a lot of sand on the yard, so the soil is not hard. But the wheels keep spinning when the plow is engaged, but runs without an issue when plow is pulled up.
You need to add weights and possibly Ag (tri-rib) tires to the rear of your tractor. The tires that come stock on that tractor are for grass use. Not ground engaging.
Um. . that particularly Lawn mower needs ag tires and it doesn't have a transaxle quite strong enough to the job. Another thing is you definitely need to have added wheel weights. Your mower is not heavy enough to create proper traction for this plow.
(AKA, I have/had that same mower - I changed the transaxle to a TUFF-TORQ K66 and now have 23" Ag Tires with wheel weights. I have no issues at all now.)

I got running bamboo and water bushes in a small back yard- buying one of these plaows - I got a 2007 MTD Yardman - it has a 17.5 B&S engine, with an 8 speed transmission , can I do it ?
How would one of these work with a quad?
I'm not sure, but I think they make a sleeve hitch attachment for quads. That is what you'll need.

My advice it to take the deck off just Incase you slip into the ditch.
Totally. I usually drop the deck for "Garden" type work, but on this day I was in a hurry and just wanted to knock out this one job.
I have a JD110 & i'm trying to plow out an old foundation filled with mud, the wide-metal plate on front (~3'x1') doesn't scoop like a bucket, anyone know how to find/build/attach a scoopythingy on the front ? or maybe there's a backhoe attachment for these? I was trying to find dirt-throwers like they use for deepsea treasure hunting but i came across this vid, so anyone know how to make a terrestrial dirt-thrower? diggin this pit out is gonna take me all summer by shovel
Man I wish I could help but that is asking a LOT from that 110. If I find a kit for a backhoe I'll be sure to send it along to you. Other then that, I'd say your best bet is to till the area to loosen it up and then use the front tractor scoop to scoop it up for dumping.
Trying to dig into compacted soil with the scoop will kill it pretty quick.
yeah it cuts out with very little resistance, but it's not grown over, just 6ft deep of dirt (25'x25'). yeah if u find a kit that'd be neat.//My plate on front is more of a pusher than a scooper, was probably meant for pushing snow or something, guess i should check CL and see what's out there. Hi, what lawn mower/tractor would you recommend for this plough?
Would the moldboard plow work to cut through poison I very roots. My back yard is loaded with poison ivy making it non usable for us.
It would but you would run the risk of getting it all over you in the process. I guess it might be worth the risk, Just remember that the roots are TERRIBLE for the oils that make people breakout- Just ask my wife who was pulling the roots without thinking- really bad case of Poison ivy for her

Form the looks of things your moldboard is way out of adjustment. The tail should lay flat in the furrow as it is pulled along. I suppose it still did as you wanted ,if it's adjusted you would have a cleaner ditch
I cranked it up that way so it would dig deeper, but not totally rip the sod off the far side. I set it that way so when I finished the job, I could just toss it back over.

They are Craftsman garden tractor weights. 55lb each.

What model tractor do you have, I was looking to buy a Cub Cadet XT1 GT50 but they don't come with diff lock, is that something your model has?
Yes his came with that already installed. If i was you, i would get an old craftsman 2 garden tractor with the 6 speed hi/lo transmission. They have way more power than a hydrostatic like this one and will last many decades longer than this one. I have a 1986 craftsman II and i is a pulling work horse. It is also a locked diff.

@@FarpointFarms It looks like I have to buy an adjustable hitch, a 2” sleeve hitch adapter, and then the moldboard plow attachment, all in about $700. I’ll probably skip the plow and put that money into a bigger rototiller.

Hmmm... I'm not sure, but it's pretty stout. Go slow and make multiple passes, and it should be fine.

Turf tires + no weights + the mountains = dead operators. I almost died the first time I tried to cut my lawn when I moved up here. The tractor lost traction and went almost 25 feet off a cliff. I jumped off as it slid past the point of no return and broke my fingers as well as bruised my inner leg as I tried frantically to hold on to the brush.
It was NOT a good day.

Get an IH Cub Cadet and the stock transaxle will laugh at every single thing you could even remotely think of attaching to, dragging, hooking, or otherwise utilising the tractor for.
Can this be done with a normal lawnmower ?
Riding lawnmowers are built way too light to handle something like this, it needs at minimum a good heavy duty garden tractor, the Garden Tractor shown is just about perfect. I love John Deere's, I have one, but JD cheaps out on the hydrostatic transaxles they use, a JD heavy enough to do the job of that Husqvarna is about twice the price. One poster mentioned a JD 318, current would be a X330, pull anything heavy behind that model and it will eat the transaxle, the 330 has a light duty transaxle only suitable for a lawn mower.

No. The reason why is lawnmower transmissions are to light duty, plowing with one would tear up the transmission. A tractor like this one, an old john deere, an old cub cadet, or an old wheel horse would pull one without tearing up the transmission. czcams.com/video/biHD3yVLpWY/video.html, This is my tractor. The current equivalent to a 318 would be an X700 series...not sure where you pulled X330 from...

Just my opinion but if you want a real good garden tractor that will last a long time I would get a John Deere 318 the things are bullet proof not literally
318 is a great machine. however I use a ATV.. mine is a Polaris sportsman 450 h.o. but.. any utility quad will pull these with ease

Where did you learn how to plow?,, ITS not even set right!.......You need to look up how a plow works before you show others.
James James did you watch the video?? I clearly explained that I would be using it to dig a trench, and as such I would have it set up differently than it would normally be used. It worked perfectly for the trench digging the way I had it set up, and it works great for normal garden work if it's set up at a normal rake.

I'm not sure I understand your comment. The unit is set to full tilt so that I could dig the trench. I mention several times in the video that I'm using it in an unconventional way to get this job done.

Fishing in Pa Not really sure what you mean it worked great. I ran 250 of PEX up to my garden, and to dig that trench would have taken me hours by hand. This little tool got it done in 20 min.
