Compact tractor plowing with a 2 bottom plow

- Today we use the Kioti ck3510se and a set of Dearborn 10-8, 3 point hitch 2 bottom plows I recently purchased. My dad (Bob) is plowing one of our food plots trying out the combo. Music written and performed by Josh Hovis.

actually, the plows need shifted 2" left. The first furrow is not turning over, just standing on edge. otherwise it is great work.
We owned a 3 point 14" breakaway plow worked great in the rocky areas, it either plowed or broke a steel bolt, back up, replace the bolt and go again. Great soil but occasional rocks on the hills (after 100 years of hauling rocks most of the rocks were gone but I swear smaller ones grow in to big ones :). average penetration was 10 inches deep. Used a 255 Massey. this plow did a good job, so did your tractor.

I just bought the ck4010 weighing about 4000lbs with loader and ballast in the ag tires, with the possibility to add some more to the front in the loader bucket, and I was wondering if it was heavy and powerful enough to pull at least a 2-bottom plow, and maybe an occasional 3-bottom when the conditions are good. So thank you since your video and numerous comments clearly answer the question.

you need to lower the right ride of your 3 pt hitch - best way i know is if you have concrete slab put left side tractor onto car ramps then adjust the hitch & top link 'til both shares flat on concrete- as an FYI a a boy we had a 2cyl JD 21 hp would pull a 2 bottom 8" deep through 30 yr old sod 2nd gear all day long

I’m trying my first time to plow an overgrown field with a single bottom on a ford 1700. Near as I can tell it does not have draft control. In a case like that do you just use the position control on the three point as best you can? This is way harder than you make it look!
Yes I would just use the position control as best as you can. The tractor we used in this video doesn't have draft control either. I think you'll start to get a feel for it after a while. John, if your front plow bottom is not cutting full width or if the front plow bottom is cutting too wide, what does the plowed field loook like after you have made a few passes?
I have no idea what that would look like, but I think if you are turning over the sod then it will get worked up in the next step which would be to hit it with discs or a tiller. At least that's what I think in my case. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching
We also have a plow like that from an old 1953 Ford 8N that needs a clutch (Reason for why I bought a new tractor since it needs an engine rebuild, leaks hydraulic fluid etc), we also have a dish harrow, I should restore both of them and make them usable even tho I probably never will cultivate land?

Hey Josh, I just got a Dearborn two roll plow exactly like yours except mine doesn’t have the coulters on it, I will will find them real soon in the future, here’s my question, does the front bar that holds your front coulter interfere with any part of the 3 point hitch when you raise or lower it?
Yes, the front coulter did have the potential to interfere. There is an adjustment. I just loosened the bolt and adjusted it down further so the front coulter was a little lower and now it is good to go, so when it is raised up it won’t or can’t make contact with the tractor. That’s a good observation on your part. Luckily I noticed it right away and made the adjustment before I raised it the whole way and did any potential damage. Good luck with your set up. Thanks

@@ryanprochna8621 Hey Ryan, I have a single bottom plow and I pull it with a Kubota B2320. The plow looks exactly like these but says Ford on in written in script. When I first looked at the plow and got it next to my tractor I thought no-way is this tractor going to pull this plow. I was completely shocked. No chains - no weights at all. I have what looks almost like pottery clay with mostly flat rocks in it the size of a match book. There are larger rocks like the size of softballs and maybe volley balls that come up no problem. I've even pulled up and flipped out rocks that I didn't even want to have to pick up. I'm telling you I was shocked. It even handled roots. This is all on wet unbroken ground. Some of the rocks would stop the tractor and I'd have to back up and hit it again. There were some things that I couldn't get out and had to go over. I was cutting unbroken ground 8-9 inches deep..
In my gardens that I plowed last year with a sears suburban 12 the Kubota pulled it like it was nothing. It is a completely different experience plowing my ground with the Kubota compared with the Suburban. Now I admit the Suburban set up was hokey and blown out and not adjustable and nowhere near where it needed to be.
100$ now that’s saving money... and it works, all you gotta do is unbolt it, lube it and repaint it..

I have watched this video over and over, got another question for you, thx for answering my first question, here’s my second question, have you plowed without the coulters on it? I ask because I have so many people that say they don’t have them or if they do have them, they take them off, what is your opinion on the coulters, anxiously awaiting your response and keep the videos coming fellow farmer.
I have not plowed without coulters on it. In the big picture I’m sure whether the coulters are on or not the ground will get turned over. I think the coulters keep the sod cut before the plow share lifts and turns the ground giving it a cleaner edge. Other than that, the end result of preparing the ground for seed can be accomplished with or without. We have some areas we use a rototiller instead of the plows and the end result is very comparable. One other thing that comes to mind is if the ground is tilled or plowed every year or so I’m sure it will turn fairly easily either with or without the coulters on. If it is an area that has been let go for a while the coulters might help the machine a bit breaking through the sod. Hope this helps. I’m sure either way you’ll get it done. Thanks and good luck

I don't know for sure but I would guess there's a good chance it would. I was always told it takes about 15 horsepower per bottom...but I'm not positive about that. Thanks for watching
I have a b2620 Kubota that is 19 hp. Drawbar and 26 hp. Pto. I pull a two bottom exactly like his with no problem.
How much time was spent and how many acres was plowed in the making of this?
This was probably an acre. It took 1.5 - 2 hours.
That tractor might be able to handle a triple definitely if you load the front end with some extra weight.
It did handle the 2 bottom with no problem. If I had a 3 bottom plow I might try it, but I think that 2 bottom is just about right for that 35 hp tractor, especially without having ag tires on it. Thanks for the comment
I run a 3/16 on my Branson 4815h for food plots. A 5/16 in the garden. On virgin earth the 5/16 is about all it can handle, but on once turn ground it pulls with no issues. It’s all about the setup. I have power link and tilt so I use it like a trim button on a boat. Ill start a drag and bump the stick a few times in either direction till I find that sweet spot where there’s hardly a load on the tractor

I have a J-D 4400 year 2000 which is a 35HP, hydrostatic with industrial tires and I bought Massey Fergusson 43 plow it's a 2 bottom plow and I was wondering if it would be a good combination or if I would worn out the hydro clutch because the plow make too much pull on that small compact tractor.
From what I see on your video, it look's like we have a similar set-up and it look's ok. Was wondering if you have to lock the rear differential or being on the 4x4 is enough ?

@@333buz thanks for checking it out! I have never had to lock the differential when plowing, but do put it in 4 wheel drive. I just put it in low range and it pulls the plow just fine. 4 wheel drive just gives added traction needed to pull

$100 for a quality Plow that does that good a job... What a STEAL! Great video by the way even if it is old. 180K views shows how valuable it has been to everyone. For my taste, leave out the music though maybe, nothing like hearing a diesel pulling a plow; music to my ears.
Wow, I need an implement like that. Hobby rancher here with that exact tractor in 40HP. I’ve got 2 acres in south Texas covered in a wild grass known in Spanish as “Sacte de Monte” translated to wild grass. It grows tall and it hardy. I’ve hit it a brush hog and have tried disc harrows and a chisel plow I bought at tractor supply to try and get a result similar to yours with no avail. I’ll definitely look for a plow seems to do exactly what I need.
After using the plow can I run the disc harrow then maybe the box blade to get a smooth look without the deep furrows ?
Yes this 2 bottom plow works great with the Kioti. We have used discs after plowing also. I also have a 6 foot rototiller for that tractor and it really does a good job chopping up the ground after its plowed as well as creating a flat level seed bed. Good luck with your field. Does a Tracker need to be in 4-wheel drive
We had it in 4wd when we plowed this plot.
Opening the field that way looks good, but aren't you leaving 14' of ground that is not plowed?
Yes but there is a reason for that. That field is on the edge of some old strip mine ground. There is nothing but rock if we plow any further. Thanks for checking it out
@@JoshHovis I was referring to when you first start plowing in the field, you plow the same way twice, by moving over and throwing the furrow on to unplowed ground. Never seen it done like that but, it looks good, might try it next year...
@@danieltravis2850 oh now I understand what you were referring to. We always called that a "dead furrow." Usually when we disc after it sits for a week or so, the discs chew up that unplowed ground.
@@danieltravis2850 only thing is you get a strip of weeds/grass down that first line if you don't open at half depth then throw back in at full depth.

We plowed this field, then we disc it until it was chopped up into a nice seed bed. Depending on the ph, we add lime, fertilizer and then seed. I usually seed a field of this size with a pull spreader behind an ATV. Or you could use a hand spreader if you want to. Thanks for the comment

We usually plow and then after the ground has been turned we will use the discs or rototiller. It always seems to work well for us. Thanks for the tip though
not very straight, plow is singular and plural you have 1 plow, 2 plowshares

Your second bit of plowing like a dog leg, if you were plowing a regular field you would end up in all sorts of problems, Ferguson used to supply two marker poles to aim at
@@geofflangley1674 well that field is an area of "reclaimed" strip mine that we normally just plant clover or some other forage crop for deer and other wildlife. We put topsoil where we plowed. Along the edges there are large rocks so we normally stop plowing as we did in the video and hit the rest with the discs. As far as it not being perfectly straight, it's really no consequence to us in this situation. Thanks

@@tp8030 I wouldn't worry about the straightness either, it's the unturned furrows that would bother me, the point being ploughing should turn the turf under. Hardy little tractor though pulling a 2 furrow plough.
