Ralph's Recommendation for Next Episode is Ben and Arthur (2002). - Zábava
Max’s letter being so long is the whole point to his character, it’s to help show how distorted and jumpy his mind his and how his brain works.
yeah, my brother has aspergers and with a lot of his explanations drag on and jump from many different topics within the same conversation. not dogging on him but youd think that someone who has known people with aspergers ralph wouldve picked up on that but who knows
One of my teachers in college was the lead animator of Mary & Max, he brought in some claymation figures a few times, they were pretty cool.
I literally would have shit my pants
A Brit, a Canadian and an American ramble about things for over an hour is my favourite anime.
Indeed my good sir
The Jarcast prequel series was better imo
Is that SPEEDWAGON!?
Is that a JoJo reference
A Brit, a Canadian and an American go into a bar, and the Canadian says to the Brit; Wreck it Ralp.
The American answers: Only if you start with the metal music Adumzzz. The American then proceeds to wreck everything while The Canadian plays hard rock metal music. The Brit sits by and drinks tea quietly.
Why is this Sardonicast uploaded at such a different time than the rest? This is such a huge PLOT HOLE.
Dude it's just a MONTAGE.

Escalating Barbarism
Then he says that the story is bad and doesn’t make sense :/
The guy who calls himself "themoviemaker" and ignores all "movie" sections in the game.
I don't know about Ralph but i play games for an entirely different reason from why I watch films. At this point so many games I play disappoint me story-wise but that doesn't matter because i play because of the gameplay. It's because I like what I do in it rather than watching what other people do. IMO there are very few games that nail the story AND gameplay so i end up going just for gameplay and get my "story" fix from films :)

The cutscenes from Spider-man PS4 make a better movie than any of the live action Spider-man films ever released.
@@escalatingbarbarism5096 but he may already be pre conditioned to skipping them because he hasn't been fulfilled by other games like this. Regardless of the quality of a games story, he may skip anyway due to past experiences. A story isn't what he's looking for in the game so he doesn't bother any more

The problem with cinemasins is that the guys who run it are thoroughly convinced that their content is “calling out the laziness of Hollywood” by nitpicking and criticizing filmmakers for utilizing cliches. You can see how not a joke it is by watching some of the early stuff on their second channel. It’s actually a huge bummer.
Quantity over quality; they take the path of least resistance with their criticism. Critics like Adam and Ralph go out of their way to find supplementary videos like behind the scenes, interviews, and other misc. clips to better illustrate a point. If Cinemasins writing was more viciously blunt and critical and they added said clips in too I'd assume they could be better. Not gonna lie, one of my favorite CZcams moments is the interview clip Adam had at the end of his The Visit YMS. My entire view on MC Night is pretty interesting because of the funny horse man on the internet.
I'm not a huge fan of CinemaWins either, to be honest. Mixing genuine points with "joke nitpicks" is annoying... but so is being a polyanna who gives praise over the stupidest shit and literally told people "Just pretend it's what you wanted it to be and see how you'll feel about it!" as a defense of Rise of Skywalker. Fuck toxic positivity.
@@DeepEye1994 is that really what you think toxic positivity is? Geez
I love when people who have never attempted to be creative or make anything at all themselves sit back and criticize people with the balls to make something
Hearing CZcamsDOTCOMSLASHRALPHTHEMOVIEMAKER enlightens my day, why did you stop saying it?
I specifically paused the video and said this part aloud, because something wasn't right and I was scared and confused.

BTW it's easily one of the best spider-man stories in any medium, definitely better than all of the movies.
Naw nigga
I still think Spider-Man 2 is stronger
@@stevenrivera3977 he honestly is sometimes. I feel like at times, he just does and says dumb shit just to get shock value but it'll just make him look idiotic and pretentious. He calls himself a Spider-Man fan, but yet he skips out on the cutscenes which are the things that basically make it similar to a movie just because he thinks it's gonna be dumb. This is the kind of stuff I notice from him that just make it seem like he's a pretentious douchebag.
@@shineon9715 I mean, he made it clear that he doesn't care about stories in games in his reviews
@@bea4828 I’d like to add that just because he doesn’t care about the story, it doesn’t always mean the story itself is bad. It just means he doesn’t care.

Peter Parker wasn't in highschool in the first trilogy. He graduated at the beginning of the first film. He's in college for most of the time.
He graduated in #3.
@@almightycinder he graduated form High school in 1. They literally have a scene in which Norman Osborne congratulates him on winning an award at the ceremony.
I love Sardonicast but I don't think you quite understood the Bechtel Test/Mo Movie Measure. The criteria are: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides *a man* at some point. I think there are ways to talk about something *relating* to a male protagonist's plot without it revolving around that man specifically (politics, technology, disasters going on etc). And it's not saying that individual films that don't fit those criteria are sexist or not worthy of acclaim, just that when you see a massive pass:fail ratio accumulated from *everything* that's been produced over the years it helps articulate the sense that general pop culture was failing to represent women as anything but vessels fulfilling male needs/desires. The more consciously aware people become of that, the more fairly balanced things might hopefully become.
Marry and Max brought me to tears when I first watched it at like 16 years old. The characters are so believable, and their genuine pain until the very end where things peacefully ended was so bittersweet. The argument that the letters are too long is kind of against the entire idea of getting to know these characters, and the ramblings are what made everything feel organic and real to me. I'm so happy you were guys reviewed this film.
RALPH HAS A LOTTA ENEMIES TRYING TO DRAINING HIS ENERGY
The last episode of Nathan for you is one of the funniest, poignant and devastating pieces of television. It not only was hilarious , but made you realise the importance of the decisions you make while you're young, so you're not filled with regret as you get older.
The Bechdel Test isn't designed to criticize single movies, but to use as a kind of metric for movies as a whole. You could use it to compare 1950 to 2018 in terms of female representation, stuff like that.
Just wanted to confirm that.
It's pretty important.
It was also „invented“ by a lesbian to show others how little representation wlw get in movies just to realize how bad women in general were represented in movies. It‘s not really supposed to be used to measure the quality of a film
@@ciriknockoff5738 It was also literally a joke? She said that it wasn't supposed to be a serious comic, the last line is literally a joke.
"The story sucks and makes no sense"
"I skipped all of the cutscenes"
Er....wut?
When did he say it sucked?
I didn't like Ralph's argument of how you need to be 18+ to understand the themes of Mary and Max. He specifically mentioned the book destroying scene and even though I'm 16 I'd say I understood the emotional baggage of it. I understand the argument that you need to experience something to fully understand it but Ralph is acting as if you can't understand it at all.
Your username makes me happy.
Isn't Ralph really young still? I feel like hes already really underestimating the level of emotional nuance teens can understand. Teens arent THAT shallow and I dont think they really need more time to understand anything presented in that movie.
I first watched Mary and Max when I was about 16 and it definitely impacted me at the time, I don't think I had a problem understanding the themes at all.
lol i watched it when i was like 13, i mean there were probably a lot of subtleties i didn’t get but i was able to understand the story and a lot of the non-surface level stuff.
I agree that some people under 18 wouldn't understand it, but just as many adults probably also don't appreciate and understand it, it just depends on your taste in movies and even life experiences. A 14 year old who is really into movies and darker adult themes would probably really like this but a middle aged mum who only likes movies with minions in probably wouldn't like this movie.
Here's some movies I would recommend for discussion:
Good Movies:
The Bird People In China (1998)- Seriously underrated/underappreciated. I love This movie so much and it's a shame it's not more well known.
Eraserhead (1978) - Because Alex hasn't seen it and Adum only saw the first half.
The General (1926) - It'd be cool to get a silent film in there.
The Apartment (1960) - Somewhat overlooked great b&w movie
Sunset Boulevard (1950) - Another great old movie
The Boxer's Omen (1983) - You think House (1977) was crazy? You ain't seen nothing yet. This is the most ridiculous goddamn movie I've ever seen. I've seen it twice and I'm still not entirely sure what it's about.
Gettysburg (1993) - Might make for interesting discussion, and it's one of the last truly epic war movies to use thousands of real extras.
Satantango - To let Adam give Bela Tarr another chance.
Bad Movies:
Stealth (2005) - If you know anything about military aircraft, this movie is so bad it's good in terms of its sheer stupidity.
Freddy Got Fingered (2001) - Because why the fuck not?
Son of The Mask (2005) - Because why the fuck not?
Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (1977) - Because why the fuck not?
The Fred Movie Trilogy (2010-2012) - They could get Lucas Cruikshank as a guest and discuss these movies with him. He thinks they're terrible, so he'd have a good laugh about it.
The Smosh Movie (2014) - Similar to the Fred movies, they could get Anthony Padilla or and have a good laugh.
Dinosaur (2000) - A very random choice, I'm just nostalgic for it and curious to see what they'd think.
I've seen all of those good films kinda recently except bird people which I've been meaning to watch for a long time..
Shout out to Horrible Reviews for introducing me to The Bird People of China. Gorgeous film.
Shrek Fanboy I love Horrible Reviews, he deserves way more subscribers.
Jonathan Sefcik those are some great "good movie" recommendations
Freddy Got Fingered is a misunderstood goddamn masterpiece I'll have you know!
Just kidding. Haven't even watched it.
Ralph asks if anyone else gets bitten by a radioactive spider, he should really finish the game.
Oof
He probably won't know what happens in the end, since he skips cutscenes.
Also doesnt the original spider die because its irradiated anyway? That's never really been a plot hole.
Wait, is someone saying that the fact that we don't learn what happens to the spider is a plot hole?
@@jesseberry4766 tbh that thing with the spider was pretty fucking bullshit. He hangs around MJ throughout 20 minutes or something, but then Miles comes in and the game is like "oh yeah, that's the guy who's supposed to have powers", and the spider just bites him out of nowhere.
I actually remember watching this movie when I was about 12, and enjoying it a lot. I wasn’t able to pick up on a lot of the more subtle themes, but I could still understand the more broad themes of depression and negative character traits. I was able to tell it dealt with more serious topics that I didn’t completely understand, but I still enjoyed the movie especially because it was presented in an animated form.
Drinking Game: Take a sip every time Ralph laughs and the other two don't. You're dead
I did see Mary and Max before this podcast and i still would consider it one of the best character studies
When it comes to plot holes I think there is a difference between suspension of disbelief and something that is hindering the plot of the story. Like if the plot relies on a continuity error.
"I think 12 is about right"
Adam 2018
I think its too far to say any discussion of plot holes is illegitimate criticism, but I also think its crazy to say that stuff like CinemaSins is anything but bad for the film community as a whole
I think you need a lot of time to discuss plot holes because you need to reflect / assess how it impacts the overacting text. If it has minimum impact on the text it's like a spelling mistake in a novel but if it has a larger impact then it's like missing / out of order chapters.
CinemaSins would be fine if they were purely parody, it would make them a lot funnier tbh. I think someone who tackles plot holes well is Mauler.
Useless Spectator I’ll check it out. I use cinemasins as an example because they’re so popular that their content has a widespread negative effect on how some of their fans might view what film criticism or filmmaking in general is about.
You’re right though, it depends on the thing. Adam also does this thing in his videos where like nitpicks individually aren’t very important but depending on the movie can build and build on each other until its definitely a problem.
Nick Molnar Defiantly. The prevalence of many minor plot holes shows a lack of thought in the construction of a text. If someone isn't going to think through the basics then the chances are they're not going to tackle the big things well.
I think this is why Adam can be a nitpicker as he analyses film as an art form. It's hard to respect an art piece and discuss its nuance if you can tell the artist didn't plan the thing.
Another thing is it is fun to explore the consequences of plot holes (Adam is a critic but being a CZcamsr also makes him an entertainer). Sometimes the thought lines get a little crazy and 99% of people wouldn't care / come to that conclusion... Still doesn't change the fact that it can be entertaining.
I see plot as the backbone of a feature film. Major plot holes / many small ones shows that the drafting process wasn't utilised properly. If you didn't plan well and you got a passable film... that was luck not skill.
Most the time people say plot holes are okay because element x, y and z makes up for it. I think that's what's so hard about film making... getting the elements to mix together in a cohesive but also satisfying way. If your have those underlying plot issues then I don't think you managed the hardest part of film making. So, naturally, it shouldn't be considered a good film. Might be an okay one, a passable one... but not a good one.
(Last parts weren't really related to your comment but I typed it out so I may as well post it)
I haven't watched a CinemaSins video in years, but from what I remember, they rarely even point out actual plot holes... That's the problem.
What they do can at best be described as nitpicking, and at worst, just completely bullshitting in order to create more low effort content.
Their videos obviously prioritize just being funny and entertaining, rather than actually making genuine, smart criticism... But since I find them neither funny, nor entertaining, I can't say I'm a fan.
I do agree. Especially when they are severely impacting whether or not people will see a film, based only on their really random and mostly incorrect points. They try to hide it behind being a parody channel, but tens of thousands of people take their criticisms seriously (and the creators have publicly stated multiple times that they genuinely believe they are a serious authority in film criticism.)
Plus, I’m just biased against them because I hate how they literally do no research before posting. Like the smiley face on mars depicted in Watchmen. All it takes is googling “smiley face mars” to know that it is real. It’s so lazy.
LMAO dude who cares about a story, it's just a large portion of the game
There's a difference between the story being told thru the gameplay, and the random cutscenes in between. Cutscenes prevent the player from playing the game, it's just a break in between so obviously it'll be rushed out renders with plotholes. Meanwhile playing and exploring the open world, doing quests and fighting baddies as the world unveils itself, that's where the real story's at.
Think of Destiny 2, they waste your time with these shitty cutscenes and pretentious dialog. But the end content is amazing because you can go around, exploring the world they created and find little snippets of clues that go into a broader story that they want to tell.
But they just go back to dumb cutscenes with really shitty dialog that makes almost no sense.
The story ain't that great really. So far it's just really basic and it sounds like everything interesting happens at the end of the game which is a shame. Otherwise its just a bunch of dicking around.
+Pix Tron Spider-Man does both. There are a lot of cutscenes but there's also a shit-ton of dialogue happening while you explore and discover things on your own. Personally, I thought it was handled incredibly well and I was kinda disappointed to hear that Ralph is just skipping the cutscenes, especially considering that they make all the buildup payoff towards the end.
Edit: I just realized we're arguing the same thing I think. Ignore me
I beat the story and I thought it was pretty good
Just reinforcing how much they need to kick Ralph out cause he is just, not a smart person. He is so bad at everything. He thinks he's so much more talented than he is. Adam and Alex always make cohesive points to back up their claims, Ralph just says shit and tries to justify it with mute points. I always got annoyed by him, and this podcast just made me completely hate him. Like, how do you not think the story of a video game is important? That's like skipping all the character development scenes and only watching the action scenes in a film. It makes no sense. Fucking retarded. And please stop defending this dumb shit. If you want the full experience of a game, you need to know the story and watch those cutscenes. Imagine playing Resident Evil 1 (Remake) and skipping all the cutscenes on your first play through. You would not be able to finish the game, because the cutscenes are intertwined with the game. I cringe whenever he has an issue with a film, it always sounds like a nitpick and stupid. Like really Ralph? The letters were too long? That's the whole fucking point and the way the story is presented.
42:15 "I wish I could cry properly"
Mary and Max is the second saddest movie I've ever seen. I recall crying so hard at the ending that I had to call everyone in my contacts to tell them I appreciate them.
We need longer podcasts haha. You guys are great, I could listen to you all day. Working 12 hour shifts just re listening to them helps get through the day so much easier. Keep it up Ralph, Alex, and Adam. Proud of you!
Yo!!! They used my "cursed fanart" I posted in the subreddit for the intro! It's the last one on the last key! So happy to have my funny photoshop shitpost immortalized in the podcast ;)
" Canada has more bears than people" " yea probably... And more twinks" love the subtle gay jokes you pitch in every now and them Adam it makes me happy lol
I really love what this podcast has turned into. The difference between episode 1 and this episode is crazy. I love when you guys really argue and examine each other's opinions. It makes me think about my own opinions alongside yours.
This is the only podcast I listen to regularyl. Keep up the good work guys, I always enjoy the show.
A friend of mine went to Cannes a few times; it's an absolute overcrowded, overheated nightmare.
I have a suggestion to get you more organized and make the podcast more consistent.
Perhaps you guys can go through a cycle of each one of you reccomending a movie, then for every fourth episode, you can have a guest, and talk about a movie THEY recommended. Or have them recommend a movie to go on top of the other recommended movie.
That could work.
I honestly don’t think they want guests that often
Love hearing such a great convo about Adam Elliot, a fellow adelaidain!
This is the first movie I've actually seen for thier discussions!
This is by far my favourite dwarfpunching podcast and I hope you guys keep going for a long time.
I think I'll skip the next film recommendation
I'd rather hear them laugh at it than seeing it.
Watch with friends
I've just watched 5 minutes and 23 seconds of it and I'm done! I simply cannot take any more of it lol. Can't wait to hear the discussion on it.
Thank you for recommending this movie, I probably wouldn't have seen or heard about it otherwise. I found it delightful and moving. I particularly enjoyed PSH's performance, his cadence and diction made him very enjoyable to listen to. I found his voice oddly comforting like he's giving me a hug while he's talking to the audience about how he finds other confusing and about what his favourite words are. This film was artful and has a lot to chew on when it comes to it's themes and it lovely animation. I immediately want to watch this movie again and I'll be recommending it to everyone
ralph building up/complimenting "nitpicking" is the most meta thing I've heard all day
Mary & Max is probably my favorite animated film period. One of the very few films that made me cry at the end
“Has no one else been bitten by that spider?”
“I mean, there’s no other Spider-Men.”
Umm...Miles Morales? Miguel O’Hara? Ben Reilly? There are a ton of different Spider-Men.
Fun fact: Sir Mix-A'Lot's "Baby Got Back" song passes the Bechtel test, technically. Tells you immediately how reductive and unreliable it is as a theory.
Spider-Man fights corrupt cops (who work for Kingpin) in the game.
“It’s Such a Beautiful Day” is heartbreaking too
god, every time I see Sardonicast uploaded a new video, it just makes me smile. mainly because I know it's going to be another very educational and entertaining episode lol
My subscription to the Beatles YT page brings more joy to the cockles of my heart than does my subscription to the modestly-lauded and overlong "Sardonicast."
I remember Mary & Max came on The Movie Network here, and just ended up starting to watch it. All I could think was "Why is this effecting me so much?". It truly pulls at your heart strings.
Also, can you PLEASE invite Ryan Hollinger on sometime? That guy does such good work. I really wish Adum knew him/liked him for his Childhood Trauma series, his content is heavily focused on horror and when he breaks down things I'm nostalgic over (Like Are You Afraid of the Dark) it just reminds me of that series you did.
Not a movie, but a show I adore but I probably can't really revisit without being in the state of mind to appreciate it all over again is Now and Then, Here and There.
Crash course on the bechdel test. It was created by allison bechdel, who was a leabian comic artist and writer. She proposed this "test" to show how alienating media like mainstream movies are to lesbians. Now a days the context has been stripped from it, so people think it's some comment on sexism. It's not. It was just a way for this one lesbian to point out to people that movies arent relatable from a lesbian experience.
Was?
_Mary & Max, fell asleep to it last night. And I can't count how may times I've actually watched and caught new things each time, I just love it so fucking much it's just, MUAA~_
Hands down Mary and max is my favourite movie of all time
Man, I would love to be a guest on Sardonicast, such fun discussion!
In terms of stopmotion, 2009 was also the year Coraline came out. I found that film to be wonderful also.
Absolutely love the podcast, thanks for the great content
ben and arthur? You absolute madman!
Ralph recommended a doozy of a film. Have fun y’all
I just watched this film as a 16 year old and it deeply affected me on an emotional level . Came into my life just when I needed it . Would say that’s too general to say no one under 18 can get anything out of it Ralph .
Great movie, thanks for introducing me to Mary and Max
Well it's almost a year later and Museo is playing at my local indie theatre... Maybe I'll finally check it out.
This podcast is incredible on 1.25 speed. I'd recommend it!
Gosh, you're right!
This was probably one of my absolute favorite episodes!lol XD
It's not a rule, it's just the "Bechdel test," and it comes from a comic strip by Alison Bechdel. I wouldn't get so wound up.
Right, but it's also taken seriously by some people who consider themselves "cultural critics", which makes it worth criticising.
I watched this when I was around 13 or 14 and it messed me up for a while.

London Film Festival is on from 10-21 October this year - if IHE is quick, he might still get tickets. Widows, The Favourite, Roma... tons more showing. You reserve tickets for individual film screenings (there are some bundle deals, but don't include the full programme).
Saw Climax with my mum. She has diabetes and she said that a lot of it reminded her of going low. I liked it and agree with what Adum said.

Where are people saying that the Story of Spider-Man is bad? I just heard good things about it everywhere.
Even Chris Stuckman gave it a 10/10 saying this it’s his favorite Spider-Man story
Praise the Sun
Is it because he doesn’t know much about games, because one can say the same to Ralf.
And if it is because you or people don’t like his opinion... well the three of them like him and had him on the podcast before so I guess they valeu his opinion in some way,
Some journalist from a small blog site and his Kotaku friend both ran articles about how it sucks that Spider-Man is a narc and the game doesnt reflect the reality of police brutality in America. And also Spider-Man isn't connected to the citizens and culture of New York enough like in the Spider-Man 2 game where you save and return balloons to kids.
This Spider-Man just:
Helps homeless people gain skills, get food, do their taxes, and directs them to shelters.
And cleans up the cities smog, water pollution, helps the wildlife, fixes Time Square before it explodes, ect ect.
But you know...he just ain't as connected to the neighborhood as he was in Spidey 2 where you could return balloons to kids every couple hours. It's only from a reputable source like Kotaku that you'll get such intelligent insight into video games.
The story is actually really fucking good and has more depth than all the movies combined.
Even outside of stuckmann iv heard the story is amazing.
I’m a huge Spider-Man fan and I agree. It’s the definitive Spider-Man story.
The ending of this video is gold.
is it bad i dont watch the movie for these sometimes but i still watch them because this is my fav podcast rn
choco flavored cookies 56 almost every movie they suggest is impossible to find without torrenting so I basically do the same
Coraline also came out in 2009, so that's four of the best stop motion films in one year. Along with Secret of Kells, Princess and the Frog and Up. 2009 was a great year for animation all around.
RALPHTHE"case by case basis"MOVIEMAKER
great podcast. ill be sure to watch Ben and Arthur
I watched Mary and Max when I was about 13. I came across it playing on film4 and loved it. I'm sure if I watched it again now, at 21, I'd get a lot more out of it. It was the animation that caught my eye but the film did keep my interest and keep me watching, made me laugh and broke my heart. I understood the negative plot points because I wasn't a sheltered child. I've been meaning to rewatch it as an adult and this episode has convinced me to do so.
Didn't even have an aussie for the aussie movie, tutututut
Adam why do you keep telling me that I'm not allowed to enjoy mission impossible fallout??? You had a different personal experience with the film than me, so obviously that means you think I'm not allowed to enjoy it!

As far as the "plot holes" argument, I think a lot of people really misunderstood Patrick H Willem's video. It was meant to be somewhat hyperbolic (as most of his videos are) to drive the point home and was mostly an attack on channels like CinemaSins. And I think the ultimate point Patrick was getting at was, "If plot holes bug you in this movie, but not in others, then the problem is probably not with the plot holes - it is that you have an emotional detachment from the characters and plot." Which I think is a very fair conclusion to make.
That was why he mentioned Batman V Superman and how, even though he could nitpick at things like "Why doesn't Superman save his mother immediately when he was able to save Louis immediately," things like that could be forgiven if you liked the characters more and were invested in what was going on. It's the same reason why people can still love Superman 1 even if the whole "time traveling by spinning the earth" ending doesn't make a lot of sense.
THAT was what the main point of Patrick's video was. He even says, "If you want to talk about plot holes, go right ahead, but don't say they're the sole REASONS a film is bad, because they're NOT what a movie is about."
And Adam, you even said in this podcast, "It depends on the context" and how certain "plot holes" will not bug you guys in certain films.
I think the main reason behind Patrick's video was that so much of Internet culture has deemed "plot holes" as the number one way to judge a film. As if a plot hole is a "cause" of a film being bad. And I really don't think that's accurate. A plot hole isn't so much a cause for making a film bad, as much as it is an effect people are more prone to see if they already don't like a movie. And by only focusing on "plot holes," you're missing out on the bigger picture.
I dunno, I just feel that, based on your giant paragraph of a comment in Patrick's video and the podcast that you really misunderstood what Patrick was actually trying to say in his video.
C4DNerd yeah, idk why everyone is so pissed at Patrick. His points were very valid in my eyes.
Could be
Yes, this guy get it. And boy did ADAM sure miss the point of the video, but that's to be expected when his skin is so thin and made of salt. Patrick was merely expressing the pointless degradation of movies because they don't perfectly hold under intense scrutiny, movies aren't 100% realistic because in real life there is little conflict, days aren't usually epic and people do act stupidly.
There's no random monumental day where you save the world and ride off into the sunset, yet people want to hold movies under an impossible standard and say it's bad if it doesn't, it's fine for comedic purposes, AVGN did it all the time with old NES games, but to expect perfection in every facet is nerdrage logic, and to say it's bad because of "plot holes" is ultimately unfair and bias, and it's gets in the way of meaningful criticism.
+Blaze Blockade:
Don't know why you didn't catch it being hyperbolic. The overly intense editing and use of humor (specifically the Hulk hands) throughout the video should've made that clear.
And 90% of CZcamsrs are hyperbolic by nature anyway, so everyone should kind of expect that going into most CZcams videos. Shoot, the Nostalgia Critic (who, regardless of what your current feelings on him are now, he DID pioneer and popularize CZcams film criticism for entertainment) was always hyperbolic in all of his videos - even calling films he enjoys as being "terrible."
The only channels that aren't are those who make extremely by-the-books video essays and overly explain their feelings out of fear of being misunderstood. And that's a very small minority. Even channels like YMS and IHE are hyperbolic to a certain extent (although not nearly as much as Patrick H Willems, Nostalgia Critic, etc.)
Nailed it. It reminds me when after bvs came out people were complaining that civil war didn’t suffer the same scrutiny. I feel when a movie watches as a bad experience it opens itself to more criticism and when the experience is enjoyable more of that same criticism gets a pass. And that’s exactly the point Patrick was making.
Adam tries to apply the same criteria to every movie but he even does that inconsistently. E.g. criticizes MI6 for its bad dramatic scenes and pays almost no credence to its superb action. However he doesn’t criticize a drama for its action because why would you?
If a movie is fun then have fun with it. Bvs is a movie that asks you to take it seriously and then fails to deliver so it is asking for that criticism, a movie like civil war doesn’t do that.
oh fuck, i didn't even know Climax was at TIFF, would've gone just for that
Thank you for answering my question.
I was the bechdel test one by the way
I was 11 when I first watched this film. I didn't understand some of the subtleties that I now noticed at age 15, but I did get the plot, the flow, and the feel of the film. It was such a different film for me to watch because i was just a teensy tiny innocent boi back then, and watching a film that deals with depression and other similar themes is just a weird feeling for me. I can definitely say that this movie changed my life. It's one of the few movies in my childhood that changed my perspective of many things. I'd say that yeah, most kids *probably* won't get something out of Mary and Max, but I got alot out of the film when i was 11, and that's something.
1:08 So it looks like people were saying the same stuff they said about the second Spider-Man game about the first one when it came out. Interesting.
I really enjoy the podcast, and really wish you guys can talk about one of my favorite Chinese film “ let the bullet fly”
