We Germans normally are very self-critical with our country. It's good to remind ourselves that we are surrounded by so many beautiful places. Maybe that would give us some peace. By the way, I like how you make an effort to pronounce the names correctly, you've picked quite a few tricky ones (Berchtesgaden, Speicherstadt!) Good job. Some of my favourite spots are Görlitz, Oybin, the Spreewald and Bamberg.

@@crymearvr7676Koblenz is a great spot for castle spotting. There are castles dotted all over the sides of the rivers Rhein, Mosel and Lahn. Many spots to visit within an hour or less of traveling:
Burg Eltz, Maria Laach monastery, Bacharach, Bad Ems, Cochem, Rüdesheim, Eberbach monastery, ...
You can basically drive in any direction or take a train and get to a pretty river town. Do go on a river cruise, it's expensive but great in good weather (pack sun glasses, sun screen and a jacket). You'll be living in a wine region, so do go on a tour of a winyard/winery (some wineries have yummy white grape juice if you don't drink alcohol - drinking wine and beer is legal at age 16 in my Germany). Enjoy meals in restaurants in old wine cellars with barrel/vault ceiling.
A little further away you have Limburg, Marburg, Heidelberg (have a tour of the castle and go to the apothecary museum), Mainz (go to the Gutenberg museum - invention of mass printing).
France (beautiful Alsace), Luxembourg, and Belgium aren't too far away, either.

There are wonderful mountain ranges apart from the alps. You missed Nuremberg (OK, that's in Bavaria too, I admit), Thuringia with small towns like Seiffen where they make all the Erzgebirge wood figurines, and personally I also love Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with its timeless rural old-world atmosphere. Greifswald may be small but it has such a wonderful surroundings. Visit the Hanse towns along the coasts of the East and North Sea and the Halligs in the North Sea. Forget Munich with its pretentiosity. Everybody goes there.

As a Saxon, I would add Leipzig and the Elbsandsteingebirge (Elbe Sandstone Mountains).
The latter one has got a beautiful scenery and it's a famous place for hiking and climbing. The Saxon part of the Erzgebirge, which is practically next door of the Elbsandsteingebirge, also has a lot of cultural features to offer - especially when it comes to wooden crafts.
Leipzig is a city in the north-west part of Saxony and offers a lot of culture and history as well. There are the Monument of the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal), the famous restaurant Auerbachs Keller, the Panometer, the Opera and Gewandhaus at the Augustusplatz, the Leipzig Bonatical Garden and many more sights.
Outside of Saxony, but also in East Germany, I can recommend the Hanse Sails in Rostock. It's a huge event that's held every August and it attracts countless people every year.

So excited that I've been to 2 of the places on this list: Munich and Frankfurt.
To me, Munich is the most beautiful city I've ever visited. I love the Baroque and Gothic cathedrals and overall architecture. In the main parts of the city, every building has such intricate detailing on the pillars, windows, etc.
What I like about Frankfurt is that it's a cool mix of old and new, with a very prominent modern cluster of skyscrapers, framed by a generous smattering of Baroque and Gothic buildings, including the Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, a Gothic wonder.

Also a hidden gem but less known is Dinkelsbühl which isn't far away from Rothenburg (btw a rivaling city in medieval times). And Dinkelsbühl was also declared as Germany's most beautiful historic city by the German magazine FOCUS.

I visited Quedlinburg with my family a few years ago. It's just beautiful there. And the cheesecake cafe is absolutely great. A visit will be worth it in any case.

@@silvercatwildfire9862 I missed the cheesecake factory! There were some really superb restaurants tucked away in random street corners too... the ambience was just so surreal, it really does feel like another world

You should add a Tour on River Rhein from Bingen to St. Goar. There you'll find the highest density of castles in Germany and see the rock of Loreley.
Also you nearly forgot eastern Germany. Here some hints: Saxon Switzerland, Mecklenburg Lake Distrikt and Dresden. Beautiful landscapes, great kulture and historical architecture.
