How To Detect A Gas Leak In A House

- There are many ways to detect a natural gas leak in a house, from a simple bubble test to high-end gas-sniffing devices costing hundreds of dollars. The people from TopTes (makers of an inexpensive gas leak detector) reached out to me on my BPV Facebook page and asked if I would consider featuring their product in one of my videos.
They were kind enough to send one over and I said if it stands up to the test, I'll be happy to post a video. My opinion when it comes to finding gas leaks in your home is to always call in your licensed professional or local utility. That being said, for the price point of this product and the fact that it does detect leaks quickly, you might consider keeping one handy in that misc. kitchen drawer
If you suspect a gas odor, you can turn it on, let the tool calibrate and at the very least find the source. Then you can call in your licensed professional or local utility to make a proper repair. This video is a basic overview of the PT199 and its capabilities. Use caution when dealing with any type of combustible gas leaks.

Nifty little inexpensive gadget. Back in the day, always used a lighter to test for natural gas leaks in NEW water heater and furnace installs. Small gas leaks just go "poof" in the flame. Doubt many of us left that used that method. Dishwashing liquid method is handy for A/C leak detecting too.
There’s a pretty famous plumber here in Houston who lost his arm using the lighter method
This is all well and good but in my opion being a electrician 37 years; this reminds me of a fuse V S a old fashion fuse . The fuse blows its a positive cut off . The soap bubbles 🍾 positively will work . Much left to fail. . I guess I am old school . Like the kiss rule, keep it simple stupid. But I guess this is more convenient. BUT I would use both methods. That is a negative! Type "L" most commonly used inside, type "K" underground.

Inspector would have failed me for a gas line bushing and no drip leg
Correct on the bushing, drip legs no longer approved in NYC.
Hi Bob, can i send you a pic of a broken cast iron pipe end coming from a toilet that ties up to a pvc sewer line see if ot can be saved instead instead of replacing the toilet and a new plumbing.
