      Yes, and that is the way here in NC. A lot of southern girls are on the offense about sounding wrong or silly. I was raised in Fl with yankees as best friends and now I'm a hot mess. My Fl friends say I sound southern and I also take it like I sound stupid, so I correct myself when I hear it. Yet I love to hear some southern accents. I'm 56 and a hot mess. Which the switching back and fourth.
      lol

Because we all young people sound the same. It’s kind of sad. I always get excited when I find someone with an accent in my country. Btw I had funny situations when I was in San Diego. She's a Pennsylvanian--you ought to get a real northerner from New England. We, for example, pronounce the vowel sound in "aunt" like the "a" in "father." The way you two say it, it sounds like you are speaking of an insect. Some Southerners pronounce it "aint." There's also the issue of our alleged infamous "r-dropping"--as in "I pahked my cah neah the cu'b at Hahvid Yahd."

      +rjdulac Typically Northerners have a lot of stereotypes about the South, and as soon as they hear a southern accent, those stereotypes come into play. I've heard lots of people in the North say that all southern accents sound "ignorant." There are ignorant people everywhere and they tend to be the loud ones, so they unfortunately do a lot towards determining the stereotypes.

    The route thing depends on the context I think. For example, "route 99"- the 'oute' would be out as in... well, out. But "take that route" over there would sound like, "take that root over there." I don't think that's because of where I'm from, that's just me. Apparently, I pronounce "data" differently than everyone else.

    I was raised in Washington State, and I call the carbonated beverage "pop". To me, a "soda" would be like an Italian soda or a Ginger Ale. I call the long-legged spider "Daddy Long Legs", and the insect that rolls up in a ball when you touch it is a "potato bug". To me, "fire" has two syllables. The thing that controls the TV is a "remote", and at the grocery store you use a "grocery cart" or "shopping cart".
    My husband is a native Idahoan, and it drives me crazy the way he says some things. Like "drag" he pronounces "drayg" and "bag" he pronounces "bayg". He uses "drug" instead of "dragged". He also uses the word "rig" to mean ANY car, whereas to me a "rig" is only a semi. And even though we were raised in the same family, my brother says "warsh" instead of "wash", and I don't.

  • @sharonspikes3422
    @sharonspikes3422 Před 10 lety +2

    From the deep South (MS/Bama) here and we all say 'puh kahn', not pee can. All 'soda' is coke. You can have an orange coke, sprite coke, grape coke, etc. So, we ask, 'What kind of coke do you want?' Rain when the sun shines is the 'devil beating his wife'. Rainbows can happen during or after a rain and sun event. Of course, it's always 'hey y'all'. The bug is a 'roly poly'. It's New 'Orlins', unless you are from Louisiana and then it's Nawlins. You get a 'buggy' at the store. Daddy is just daddy most of the time, but I do know some that say it like 'diddy'. That's all I remember. Fun video, girls.

    I grew up in pennsylvania and moved to south carolina. And ALOT of words said and used differently. A lot more than what I feel like they covered. Like purse- pocketbook, yearbook-annual, everyone- y'all, school,court all end in house, preacher- preacher man. And what I really didn't get is that the southern girl didn't know whats called when it's raining and the sun is shining. The term is 'the devils beatin his wife.'

    Y'all are too cute lol. I am from southeast Louisiana. These are my sayings/meanings: shopping cart = buggy, soda = cold drink, pecan is pronounced as puh-cawn, and remote control = remote. On my job, I get clients all the time saying "clicker" for a remote control haha and I always find it funny. I've noticed people from San Francisco put an E.R. at the end of just about everything. The number nine = niner for them lol. I never gotten that. It's cute though.

      Aero, you made me laugh. When I moved from Boston to suburban Chicago, they said pop for soda. Buggy? I'd say cart. New Orleans, or NAWlins. Interesting your comments on San Francisco talk.

    • @AeroHostale
      @AeroHostale Před 10 lety

      OSTARAEB4 I have never pictured a Bostonian saying New Orleans any other way but Nawlins. I've never heard a Bostonian say New Orleans before but you Bostonians have a veeeeery strange accent but strange as in a very good thing. I love hearing people from Boston speak! I even mock them sometimes lol. Pop is something I've never heard in my life until I moved to Colorado. I lived in Denver for the past 7 1/2 years but just moved here to Texas five months ago from there. Every kind of soda is referred to as cold drink by New Orleanians lol and when people ask what kind? Some people refer to the color of it, literally. "Gimme the red flavor". It makes waitresses jobs much easier down there lol. Do you have a strong Boston accent?
