That's what defenders are taught to do in soccer. But of course you would try to not get into a situation where you are facing your own goal and a high ball is heading towards you - that usually happens if you were too lazy or too tired to run into a good position for clearing the ball. So TL,DR he wasn't trying to be fancy, he was either lazy or tired.
