    Nice video production. You should update the review since the AF system was completely redone and it changes the camera completely. Speed, tracking, nearest object priority, auto electronic first shutter, Eye AF, and greatly improving the AF focusing in very dark conditions so for low light it beats the D850 now and keeps up with the D850 for action and birds in flight. The firmware 2.0 nails focus with greater AF accuracy than my other Nikons such as D850 and D800 so it is used for almost all my assignments plus personal shooting. It is such a big change that it needs a new review. Also, the new lenses released are the best of their FL, such as the 24-70 2.8 S is faster and sharper than any other mid zone on the market, far better than the G and E versions which I also have.

    Really impressed by that review. You don't hide your paintpoints but still show your exitement.
    I own that camera, I really like it, but I also see some of your points. Haven't used it to the same extend as ou, so I'm at least aware of those not being used by me so far.
    I hope that with the release of the new firmware Nikon gets the biggest thing solved, which I think is the missing eye-focus and eventually extending the ability to keep an object in focus.
    Thanks again for that video.

    Great review !!! Yestarday use my Z6 on my First Event of the year...….I love love love it its awesome the SOOC is amazing don't need to do editing most of the shots come really nice, I was skeptical about the AF but i was really impress I took about 1000 pics about 10 or less were out of focus, autofocus is very usable its better than the D750 but not as good as D500 to lock on subject, defintely will get another Z6....or maybe two ;)

    I Flippin love my Nikon Z6. I was thinking about switching over to Sony and get rid of my Nikon D800 and my D7100 and 12 lenses. But I wanted to give the Z6 a chance but I wasn’t expecting what I got. And when I got was a kick ass camera that blows the doors off of both of my other Nikons. The image stabilization let you get some of the sharpest handheld shots that you would think came from the tripod. The best thing about the Z6 for me and I use it for photography only. It is how the camera auto focus tunes every lens is soon as you put it on you don’t have to do nothing like the old DSLR’s. Are use nothing but F mount lenses and the Z6 breathed new life into all my lenses. I have an even tried the new Z mount lenses. The NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE IS GREAT!!!!! EYE AUTO FOCUS is amazing. No you can’t go 30 feet back like this Sony cameras but the eye auto focus works extremely good for its first try. I haven’t missed one shot yet using it. I’ve had three photo shoots since they updated the firmware and all of those photos have tripled my workflow with new clients. The Z6 is staying for a long time. I wish it did have two card slots but it don’t even bother me one bit due to I don’t do no more weddings. The XQD card Is one fast beast. I love it. Don’t go by what everybody says on CZcams they don’t like this I wish it had this whatever try it out give it a chance if you don’t like it return it. But I bet you’ll keep it it’s an amazing camera

    Great review. I think the most exciting thing for Nikon users is the 50mm 1.2 that's coming up next year (and hopefully the 85mmm 1.2 also?? let's pray). I think the autofocus will be tweaked with the next firmware update. But for me, doing headshots and portraits, the autofocus capability is more than adequate. Even DP review said that the z6 has the best video performance among the entry level FF mirrorless among Nikon, Canon, and Sony.

    Wonderful review, Dan and Sally. I’m straddling both systems (Sony and Nikon), and hanging on to Nikon DSLRs and longer lenses because of a passion for wildlife. If Z6 had a better autofocus system for BIF for example, I might have considered moving back to Nikon for mirrorless. I love your reviews, please keep it up - and I love it when you team up.

    Hi Dan & Sally, This exciting time of mirrorless camera war does not only challenge the brands but also the users themselves whose main concern in reviews such as this is to seek a sound technical advice, not to ditch their brand, but how they can protect their years of investment and know-how in using the said brand. And to state your case well, you proved & demonstrated mastery over the good and bad points of the device. I think your method of review is unbiased and credible. You fill the gap that any brand users are looking for. 👍👍👍

    A nice down to earth review, also nice to see the opinion of more then one person.
    Almost pulled the trigger on the Z6 myself, but since this is my first "Proper" camera the A7lll just added that little bit more that made it more compelling, mainly in the larger native lens selection, the more consistent auto focus performance, dual card slots and proper USB charging (charging while using the camera). But other then that Nikon did a fantastic job with the Z6 especially for a first gen product.
    I have to disagree though with UHS-ll cards costing more then XQD, at least where I live in Canada, XQD cards cost a lot more for the same size the UHS-ll SD cards.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 Před 5 lety

      It is too bad you listened to the CZcams hype, the a7iii is poorly built, zero weather sealing, far less useful EVF and rear display, using the consumer style XQD that even Sony admits is far less reliable than the XQD, the worst control, and menu system, the worst flange size and flimsiest flange ring of any brand at any price, the worst repair and support in the industry, worst video performance of any FF mirrorless and least accurate focus peaking system in FF cameras. The ONLY reason beginners, in particular, go for the Sony is the AF was better for a while in stills although video af was not good, and the cheaper price. The latter point is silly since the lenses are twice as expensive. With the tiny crop size flange, all lenses will be more expensive and larger to get a set level of performance. But the main reason that pros do not buy them is simple, cheaper price but need to be replaced more often is actually a poor return on investment. Sony service is notorious in all fields, not just their consumer camera division, for limiting access to parts for repair and in particular, after a model is dropped from production parts are almost impossible to get. That has been a Sony corporate-wide policy to force more sales for decades. That is a bad deal for those who need to depend on their cameras for their living.
      Now that AF is not much better or better at all than Nikon, Canon or Panasonic, and everything else is worse than those brands, it is left to beginners who are influenced by CZcams promotion to keep sales high, and their policy to forcing replacements so often for cameras that have zero resale value except as spare parts junkers for $25 if one breaks keep sales high just replacing fairly new cameras.

    • @wanfanelle
      @wanfanelle Před 5 lety

      The native lenses for the EOS R are more expensive, but your video will not be cropped at 1080p and you get the fully articulating screen. The EOS R is also just a more expensive camera itself with no in body stabilization for those videos, but it you will get better focusing results from that camera in lower light. You can't go wrong with either I guess it just depends on how much you want to spend. I went with the Z6 and I am happy with the system.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  Před 5 lety

      Thanks! Probably the Z6. The Canon EOS R lenses are great but EXPENSIVE so unless you have a $5000 budget, that's probably a bad choice. 1080p video was decent but still way more limited than the Z6 and the Z6 has better image quality and speed. I'd give a slight advantage to the EOS R on focusing but Nikon has already said a firmware update is on the way

Vintage manual Nikon lenses are fantastic for video and much cheaper than many other options. I do have to agree that the S lenses are not that great right now. I would buy the Z6 without the f4 or f1.8 lenses. But the mount is gonna be great in the future as its larger and shallower than the competition.

    Hey Dan
    thanks for this very informative review.....
    I didn't stop me from running out and getting the new Z6 and Z7 after hearing the announcement from CES from Nikon.
    I am so happy with my purchase and really don't care about 2 card slots and Cfast will give this camera a boost in buffer speed
    Coming from a 4 year battle with M43 I have never been a Nikon owner (I've owned a Canon 70D and Sony nex)
    Having no F mount lenses I will stick with the "S" line native lenses (I have preordered the 14-30 f/4)
    I just made a video about the Z6 and a cool cage rig (Old dude trying)
    if you have time I would love to hear your constructive criticism about my channel
    can't wait to see your future thoughts on the "Z" line of cameras

    Any hint of an adapter without that ridiculous tripod mount built in? And do you think the issues with autofocus can be fixed with future firmware upgrades? Also, do you find the lack of a second card slot poses an issue specifically with weddings, where the stakes on redundancy are probably higher than any other job? Other than that, it looks like a great camera, but the current design of the adapter and the lack of an alternative is a dealbreaker for me.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  Před 5 lety

      No hint of a new adapter. I do think the AF system will get slightly better with an update though not significantly. They have already issued an update for the Z7. For me, redundancy is pretty much mandatory for weddings. Not worth being sued out of business over a damaged/lost/corrupt card. Plus, we have 2nd shooters a lot so 2 card slots allow us to use 1 of our cards and 1 of theirs. Also, sometimes I want to download a few images during the reception and I would be to scared to do that with only 1 card. Lots of reasons for 2 cards. Had a card stop shooting once during the ceremony. Didn't lose the images but the fact that I had a 2nd card already in the camera meant I just pulled the bad card and kept shooting. Would have been in trouble if I didn't

    I have 2 questions. First, Tony Northrup stated that the auto white balance and AF on the Z6 and Z7 is absolutely horrendous. What is your opinion about these issues? Secondly, why did you choose the Z6 and not the Z7? Doesn't the Z7 appear to be the camera with better image quality?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't disagree with Tony but I don't think it's as bad as he made it sound. Sure, it's no Sony A9 especially with tracking but it was not horrendous once you learn the limitations and I rarely depend on auto WB anyway but again, I didn't think it was horrendous. I actually prefer the Z6 in many ways to the Z7. I don't think Nikon introduced lenses good enough for a $3500 camera. I also think the Z7 SHOULD have had dual card slots given the price tag and possibly some other feature. The Z6 shoots better video, is slightly faster, and the new Z lenses match the price/quality/target audience of the Z6 much better.

      Had recorded this before CES but I did add a title overlay about it. Of course Eye AF will be dependent on performance. Remember, Sony had it early on but it wasn't until the 2nd generation that it got amazing. Canon technically has it on the EOS R but not with continuous AF so it's essentially worthless for most uses. Also, CFexpress will depend heavily on price and how many manufactures jump on board so it could be a while till we see the value over XQD or SD

    Dan, love the info on the Z6. I am wanting to switch to mirrorless but I am overwhelmed. I have been looking at the Z6, Sony A7 III, and now the Lumix S1 is near. I am an avid hobbyist that shoots landscape and have recently taken a liking to video These cameras offer the in body stabilization and so that is attractive to me. I like the looks of the Z6 but the idea I have to buy new memory cards detracts from it. I have a lot of SD cards that would become worthless with that camera. It also seems the verdict is out on the S1 as it is not on the market yet for reviews. I have a little time before I buy, but I am looking at buying by August. I know these cameras all shoot great pictures I am really interested in the stabilization for the video. Do you have any advice? Thanks, Jerry

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  Před 5 lety

      Hey Jerry! Honestly for now I would skip the S1. It's not bad but it's definitely a wait and see camera and not for the faint of heart. Between the A7III and Z6, it will be tough. I wouldn't worry too much about cards though. You will be upgrading your SD cards to UHS-II soon enough anyway so might as well do it now with the Z6. Plus those cards are really nice and crazy fast.
      But as far as cameras go, I really love the Z6 images, handling, touch screen, and overall usability. The new firmware updates for improved AF will be out before August so that should help. However, the A7III offers even better autofocus, dual cards, and more native lenses so it's a tough call. Both stabilization systems work well for video though I personally think the Z6 handles movement slightly better. I have both at home and I'm ALWAYS torn on which one to use lol

      Dan I do have another question. You said you wouldn't worry to much about memory cards. It seems to me the UHS-II cards are a lot more affordable than the XQD cards unless I am looking at B&H incorrectly. There doesn't appear to be to many manufacturers of the XQD card right now. It seems Sony and Delkin make them. I don't see Lexar or Sandisk in the market there. Can you elaborate any? Thanks again

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  Před 5 lety

      @@jerrysanderfield Yes, pretty much only Sony is making XQD cards at the moment as most other brands are skipping this for something called CFexpress coming soon. The Nikon Z6 will be upgraded to also support CFexpress this year so you will eventually see more card choices but I expect these cards to cost even more than XQD. This is the XQD card I would get: bhpho.to/2CjftUV which is actually a little cheaper than Sony's UHS-II card: bhpho.to/2BHVtud although if you were getting UHS-II I would step up to Sony's new tough cards: bhpho.to/2QdYJV5

      Pranam Kadle I didn’t fill like writing anything too long lol. The short version is that you will likely be happy with either one. I went with the Nikon because Nikon is a camera company so you will get better ergonomics, better weather sealing, better lenses, and better support. Sony is an electronics company known for great innovations, but with poor execution of them. The Walkman, Betamax, the minidisc, memory sticks etc. Betamax was a superior format, but they have their hands in so many different departments they can’t focus on a particular area well enough their only real consumer success has been their PlayStation. The point is every innovation they make someone else refines it better and has a greater success with it and they just seem to move to the next thing. They have no F/1.2 lenses because they say they are impractical which is silly I think they lacked the foresight with their lenses mount for their mirrorless camera even after going through several of them and now their ibis suffers and their ability to make wider aperture lenses than 1.4. It is these things you need to factor into your buying, because once you invest into the system you will have to sell everything at lower cost and it can be a pain. I would personally go Nikon, but the most important thing is what you plan on doing with the camera and weighing out how one or the other will benefit you. 🤷‍♂️

    Great video. Now, you should mention (in a new video) that the Z cameras will have soon Eye AF + CF cards + ProRes RAW !!!
    For me the worst thing about the FTZ adapter is what you say in this video. I do hope Nikon launch one not tripod mountable. When you shoot with a long lens on a tripod you normally attach it to the tripod through the lens collar!
    Canon had a much clever approach to this, launching 3 adapters: one tripod mountable like the Nikon one, one without and even one which allows you to insert a filter in it!!!
    It's also true the 2 FN buttons on the front are pretty useless when you shoot video on a tripod. A good solution could have been to put 2, or at least one FN button on the top of the camera, just between the info screen and the main dial! (in case of 2 button, the loudspeaker should obviously be pushed a bit further)

    • @michaelst.9055
      @michaelst.9055 Před 5 lety

      I also like the idea of the filter enabled adapter in the Canon, biggest paintpoint there is the weather seal.
      Beside this, got a L bracket from SmallRig together with a tiny extender that allows for supporting the FTZ adapter with or without a screw. So mainly 'unscrewed' in horizontal mode and with screw support if I like to swtich often to vertical with a heavier lens. As the SmallRig L bracket comes with a magnetic holder for the tool, it's quite easy to put that extender away if you like to shoot with native lenses but a L bracket only.

    why buy this if you already have the A7III ? Geniunely curious.

      because of the field we are in, we do own multiple camera systems so if I prefer some things about the Z6, I'd absolutely consider buying it. Most people shouldn't though and would be better off staying with the system they have. For us it makes sense to be shooting with our current favorite camera even if it means switching systems frequently

      @@learningcameras Yeah I totally get that. Bus as a hobbiest, I am wondering if this is just gear lust haha. A major concern is the lenses you already invested in.

      @@JacobChristiansen1 Yeah, we are in a more unique situation. I usually hang on to lenses from other manufactures so when new cameras get released, I have lenses already to test them

    Nice video, but honestly the Z6 and the Z7 should have had vertical grip options and 2 card slots as pro cameras and at pro prices.

      The Z7 for sure but I think they can get away with it on the Z6. I think the Z7 was more of a letdown

      A single XQD is far more reliable than 2 SD card slots. You have never heard of lost files with the XQD. Sony makes $35000 cameras for pro video and they use a single XQD on sessions and news gathering that is far more critical than cat photos and pros never complained because it is a none issue. The 2 slots were NEEDED when consumer grade SD were being used but there is no excuse for risking what SD makes you risk.
