Having achieved surprise in their new offensive through the Ardennes, the Panzer units must maintain a fast pace to take Antwerp before the Allies can deploy reinforcements to the region. At St Vith and the approaches to Bastogne, fierce American resistance is hurting German progress. Kampfgruppe Peiper have a difficult time navigating the small villages and bridges of the Ardennes with their immense Tiger 2 and Panther tanks.

I'd like to believe that he got to see his men get out before he passed. I hope he knew his men got away and that his sacrifice wasn't for nothing. Americans fought really bravely with extraordinary initiatives from junior ranks. That blowing up bridges in the middle of night in some kinda stealth fashion was incredible.
Being a keyboard warrior, I had imagined at the time of a conflict, training, good logistics, leadership within the rank and file, spirit de corps were way more important than ideologies.
Cruelty does not equate to bravery. Being harsh with prisoners of war or civilians does not mean they can fight an equal peer who could shoot back with ferocity.

6:20 - On this terrain map I can see, directly North of Peiper, between Stavelot & Malmedy, the outline of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. This is a bonus and provides great context for anyone who has watched the Belgian Grand Prix held here each year in August, as its one of the most filmed valleys in the area, known for its extreme gradients and wild weather. Even on a clear summer’s day you could hide half an army in the woods around the next bend in the road or find yourself at a cliff edge if you go cross-country. The camouflage advantages in snow & fog would be dramatic, but any German soldier who knew the ground must have known it would be impossible to move so quickly through this defended terrain in winter.

Not every American was taken by surprise by the German attack. Various intelligence officers could see the buildup and figured something big was happening. One of those was Patton's G2 officer, a former NYC detective I believe, who brought it to Patton's attention. Patton said he did not think it meant much at the time but made contingency plans to move to deal with it anyway, just in case. That was why he was able to move his army so quickly. His staff had already done the work. BTW Patton's staff had a poor reputation within the Army up to that time.

My great uncle was at this battle, but he barely talked about his service or the war generally. He just wanted to read the paper, watch baseball and go to church. When prompted, the only story he told was that one night during the Battle of the Bulge it was his turn to dig his commander's foxhole. He dug it so deep the commander yelled at him: "I didn't tell you to dig me a grave John!". He said that night the Germans shelled them harder than he'd ever experienced before or after [he landed at Normandy on D-Day +6 and fought across the entirety of France and afterward into Germany]. The next morning, his commander apologized and thanked him and he didn't have fox hole duty after that. After he passed away, his wife showed me a large glass-topped box full of medals and said he was one of the most highly decorated men in his unit but he never displayed his medals or brought it up to anyone, even his family. His time in the service eventually caused his death later in life due to emphysema from the cigarettes he got addicted to in the service. The son of proud Italian immigrants, he volunteered to serve. Rest in peace sir.

7:23 I wish one day we get a super realistic VR world war two game that shows battles like these. Not D-Day like we've seen oh so many times before, but little battles like those that may seem small and needless, but still makes you feel accomplished

The details of the attack are truly impressive and a very important part of American history. The brave sacrifice of Harper and his men had been lost to history as well as the attack and destruction of the bridge. If the Germans had taken Bastogne and it's fuel, who knows what would have happened? Great job.

The fact that Gen.Patch was watching the battle unfold to his North, and 100% predicted *Both* Eisenhower & Patton’s plans shouldn’t be overlooked.
If Gen.Patch’s commanders weren’t ready to (instantly) cover theirs & now Patton’s positions along the frontlines. There would be no way that Patton could have pushed North so quickly, or even effectively, no matter Patton’s bravado on the radio. (Patch’s men even advanced against the Germans during the Bulge. Even though they were literally last in line for men & supplies)
It’s another reason why the Germans saw Patton as a Rommel-type, but truly feared & respected Gen.Patch.

Correct me if I am wrong but Patton actually paid attention to the intelligence reports of German activity in the Ardennes and had his army make contingency plans in case of a major German offensive to his North. So, when the offensive started, he activated those plans immediately. (I read this years ago so someone correct me if I am wrong!)
