The key town of St Vith is under siege. Along the whole front, the American units are desperately trying to delay the German advance as much as possible, to allow British XXX Corps and Patton's Army to arrive to halt the offensive. Bastogne is cut off.

Imagine being the tanker crew who ran from their tank and then had guys who've never operated a tank before get in your tank and make the enemy retreat solo
Imagine getting shrapnel in your face or a limb blown off, barely surviving only to have some unthinking twat talk shit about you 80 years later in a comment section because some paratroopers found your knocked out tank and made use of what still worked.

They figured out how to traverse the turret, reload the gun and managed to kill an enemy tank... without ever being in one. The airborne really are something else ever since their inception.

Brave but very, very, VERY dumb. He didn't need to kill himself to destroy the tank in any way, shape, or form. The HEAT warhead on a bazooka will do the same thing whether it's 10 feet away or 1000 feet away.

I have a friend who's grandad was part of the retreat out of Bastogne where the 101st started taking ammo from fleeing troops as they went in.
When he was told by a US officer to hand over his rifle to the paratroopers, he said "F*ck that, sir. I'm coming with you!"
And hopped in the truck.
He then proceeded to fight in Bastogne.
That's badass.
Probably 28th Infantry Division, probably Pennsylvania National Guard.

After watching the episodes on Easy Company, it made the series a lot clearer in terms of scope of the operations they were involved in. As well as Easy's attack on the four guns at Brecourt which I had a hard time imagining the lay-out and situation for.

My father John was on the American 72nd Ordinance Group. He was in Liege when the Ardennes Offensive began on December 16th. His brother Mike was an infantryman stationed near St Vith. He was engaged in intense combat there which my father told me about when I was a kid but I never knew until I read my Uncle’s obituary decades later that he won two Bronze Stars for valor during that fight.
My great grandfather on my dads side was In Ardennes when they were being shelled. They were told to retreat by the Lieutenant as the lieutenant was struck by artillery fire in the head, killing him instantly. “We stayed in our foxholes until dawn” he told my father. It was the only story he ever was comfortable speaking of, and he only told it once. He got a bronze star for saving a fellow soldier, but said he never accepted it because he was “ordered to do it, and he had no choice.”.

I’ve been rewatching band of brothers in Bastogne while also watching this and it’s very interesting to try and picture it all. BoB manages to show us a small sliver of a front that’s across an entire country, and in it they depict so much chaos I can only imagine the rest of the frontlines.

My Great Uncle fought in St Vith, he captured by the Germans, and when he was on a train being sent to a POW camp, Allied fighters mistakenly thought that the train was a supply train so they strafed it. He was wounded but miraculously survived. After the war he was released and came home.

It’s a shame no one is talking about the solider who charged a tank by himself and blew it up knowing it would kill him but he still made that journey and sacrificed himself. To me that is on a total different level to any other solider I respect all them men but that guy who is so thing else.

Boyer and his men were heroic. The level of their stand was fantastic. I can't imagine how hard it must've been to stand that ground hour after hour. They had to know it was only a matter of time before they were simply leveled. One of the things about this series that's so important is remembering this type of specific action. History remembers the generals and a few of medal winners but unfortunately, we never got to hear about Boyers men and all the other men & units you've taken the time and effort to research. This series highlights the need for this type of education. Our country and frankly, the rest of the world, owes so much to our brave, heroic soldiers that literally stared down death. And these people deserve to be named and individually recognized & remembered. Thanks again for your hard work.

That is absolutely incredible a group of airborne infantry just commandeered a Sherman tank with no training whatsoever and managed to actually fire back and knock out an enemy tank, and send the others in retreat. I would love to learn more details about this story. WW2 is absolutely fascinating, just learning these small scale stories of individual valor that get overshadowed by the bigger picture.
They were very similar setups to anti tank guns which they have training on

Incredible fortitude by those Americans holding the lines, but also I'm impressed by how powerful the Germans still were this late in the war, especially considering how short their training was.

@@mgway4661 And very and I mean very good tactics and strategy. The germans managed to revolutionize how wars are fought with their combined arms doctrine, stuff that is still used today. They seem to have been better at it then than the russians are today.
Additionally if you think about how many supplies they threw at this. It was everything they had left pretty much and they still weren’t even close to their set objectives. Idk I’d argue this was like an animal in a trap lashing out with all its remaining strength. And they were going up against an army that truly didn’t expect it.
Even very late in the war the Germans were still quite capable defenders.

My Dad was there, a Combat Engineer Captain. He said during a terrible Buzzbomb attack one landed next to him in his Foxhole throwing dirt on him but didn't explode. He was blowing up stuff and building bridges. Was with the first into Paris also. He told many stories, but didn't speak of the Battle of the Bulge very often. Said the cold was brutal by itself. Thanks for this.
I would just like to remind people that the US put up this much resistance *while being on another continent with an entire ocean between her and her troops*. Crazy amount of logistics to deploy a force large enough to push back an opposing nation's mass of hardware rolling towards them.
The US reached Boss level when it came to logistics. Some of the ideas such as containerizing the cargo are still dominant in world commerce today
It's because the US itself wasn't being attacked. Let's say for example the Japanese actually did invade the US and got as far as salt lake city things would've been different. It's because our industries weren't being attacked is why we were able to amass logistics the way we did in WW2. Also, it was per our strategy to do so as well.
This series is simply amazing. I’ve spent a bit of time in those woods east of St. Vith and this has really helped me to understand the bigger picture. 👊🏻

Graham young that’s very interesting that you used to serve in the black watch and that’s interesting to me because I play the tenor and sometimes base drum in a bagpipe and drum band that is based in the United States and the band I am in is actually named after the black watch but the band is called the Atlantic watch and besides the bands name the band I am in also has permission from the Queen mother and the permission grant’s the band that I am in to wear the red hackle.

@@TheMrlister72 well thanks and I try to beat it loud and I will always wear the red hackle with proudness especially since I am part Scottish and thanks for the regards because it means a lot to me and my band especially since my band just got designated the official pipe and drum band for the town that we practice in and I would say that I feel very proud to play in the band I am in because in 2019 I was nominated best drummer and as my reward I got my own dirk and like I would also sort of say that my band is sort of lucky since my band got to play with the chieftains and also since the band I am in has been asked to come to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D Day.

Please, please do a full series on Operation Market Garden. It's a wartime classic. A 10 day dash (Nov 17th-27th 1944) up a major highway to take three major bridges leading into Germany from the Netherlands. Some 100,000 troops involved, allied armor against German armor. I think three VCs awarded and a half dozen Medals Of Honor. The allies failed in their objective, the Germans held the final bridge over the Rhine, extending WWII into 1945. It's one hell of a battle.

My M. Grandfather was a WO, 147th Amrd Sig CO, (Am.FArty "Lucky 7th"), and he told me stories of the cold, and the German infantry infiltrating their lines everywhere, at St. Vith. He stretched the radio cables between guns, and gun batteries, and the CP, so they were alone a lot, with a 30cal MG on a jeep (with cable spools) and their personal weapons, supposedly behind the lines, but at St. Vith there were no real lines. He had some scary run ins.
The Germans have vastly underestimated the elan and courage of American soldiery - even without advantages in numbers and support they've decisively checked the northern advance with True Grit. Monty's initiative in sealing the Meuse is admirable, as is Eisenhower's grip of the threat when Bradley and Hodges lost the plot. The battle is an admirable display from armies that certain people to this day like to denigrate.

Bastogne get the most spotlight of the defense in Ardennes, since there's many war correspondent were in the Bastogne area, but the US soldiers at Elsenborn held the Germans without the media even recognize the valiant defensive effort. The VT fuze HE shells, ToT tactic of the American artillery in the Elsenborn defensive lines also contributed the major casualties on the Germans in Elsenborn area, plus AT mines, bazookas and the American tank destroyers setup ambushes along the Germans axis of advance.

Its just a shame it was necissary to begin with
Incredible bravery, but incredible cowardice too. Much like today, a lot of the deaths and suffering that resulted from the war were inflicted by people from relative safety against those without means to defend themselves. Intentionally against civilians, not as strategic bombing but as depopulation or occupation operations. The bravery that others showed only exacerbates it.
Yeah… I’m going to have to go with a big no on that. Fuck literally all of those nazi pukes. Their “bravery” paved the way for the slaughter of millions. Massive swathes of both sides of my family were entirely wiped out, basically the few that came here in the early 30’s were the only ones who survived as everyone who stayed didn’t make it through the invasions, occupation, and camps. I would have been 100% fine with prison terms or execution for every single man in uniform. You put a swastika on your uniform, you deserve a bullet.
Loving these long winded series for these complex operations.
If I can offer small feedback, it would be nice if you could add some highlight of the icon when they are mentioned, specially when there are over two dozen icons on screen.

This video gave me such a nervous, uneasy feeling, I had to remind myself a couple times that I'm watching history and am not actually there going through all that.
My dad was at St. Vith with the Seventh Armored Division where his tank, (he was the driver), was hit by the German's fire ripping off the tracks from his tank forcing everyone to bail out and head for the US lines. This was his closest event to losing his life during the war, (at least through his telling), where I as able to verify the events through my research from the US Archives. His tank wasn't on of the M4 Sherman's, but a M5A1 Stuart light tank used for reconnaissance, as it had one of the fastest speeds of any tank during the war.
He sounds like a scout.
Hell, this documentary is more informative than even the "World at War" series!
The World at War gave the Bulge little time. They said that Hitler wanted to take Antwerp, which they described as _fantasy._
Amazing videos. My grandfather's brother was in Company A, 1st Btn of the 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. He was killed on the day they knocked down the church steeple and retreated (Dec 20, 1944). I'm not sure if he was already killed early in the day and was loaded onto a vehicle before the traffic jam or if he was killed when the Panzers attacked the line of stalled vehicles. Either way these videos give me an unparalleled detailed connection to these events. These details are things I never dreamed I would ever be able to learn about. I am anxiously awaiting next week's episode about the Battle of the Bulge because my other grandfather was in the 358th infantry regiment, 90th Division. They came up to the north through small villages in Luxembourg to the east of Bastogne. He was in some fierce fighting especially in and around the town of Oberwampach in a battle that lasted a couple of days. On January 17, 1945, the after action report from that day describes the two "huge men from Remer's brigade" who he personally captured along with a group of other soldiers. We still have the pistol of one of those German officers in our family. I am confident that someday I will learn the identities of these apparently high ranking German officers who he captured. Keep doing what you are doing. I am extremely grateful and will support your efforts. Thank you!

Some of the best gaming in my life has been in Darkest Hour (The Red Orchestra mod). It goest through damn near every bit of the Buldge... Golden years were 2010-2015ish. Man those were good times.

The painstaking research that must have gone into developing this detailed analysis to educate/inform the rest of us is simply breathtaking. This is the most underrated channel on this platform as far as I'm concerned.
