I Make Viking Gloves (And Play in the Snow!)

- Any Viking will tell you that no Viking winter fashion is complete without some mittens or gloves. Gloves were the only things missing from my Viking winter look, so I whipped up a super easy pair of mittens, based on archaeological finds, to go and play in the Edinburgh snow!
Somehow I managed to tear myself away from Valheim (yes, I'll be reviewing it!) and decided a snowball fight in Greyfriars Kirkyard counted as my lockdown exercise for the day! Join me as I show you how simple it is to make authentic, cosy mittens for all your sea raiding and Norse sailing needs!

I'm definitely one of those Finns who gets VERY excited by snow every winter, and I'll be 40 in a few years. I love it when others are excited by the snow, too :) The more the merrier, says I!
I'm a winter girl, and I get very grouchy when we have dry and/or warm winters. Everyone else around me is like "YES" and I'm over here grumbling in the corner. Maybe it's the Finn on my mother's side.

I love how such a simple and practical solution to kids losing mittens has been around for centuries.
👋. Norwegian here! You called? We've been having a nice cold spell here these last few weeks. Which is a treat here I live, on the west coast of Norway. We usually only have sleet and slush and sour winds in January/February. So I can appreciate that giddy feeling when you finally get proper snow! Your mittens turned out great! I made a more modern version a couple of years ago (using a sewing machine) in wool felt. So nice and warm. I have since lost them... Truly sad. But my mother has knitted me som felted ones, and they have been perfect in this -6 weather we have had. Sadly now the temperature has warmed up, everything has started to melt and soon we will go back to the normal sleet and slush again... 😕

Absolutely. He's a big fan of handmade mittens, and hats with felt moose antlers.
The string is also useful when you have to take one mitten off to do something and need your hands free. It just hangs from your sleeve and then you just put it back on when you are done.
God I hated those little mittens with a string as a child. Literally the worst. Wish I had some now that I am an idiot. 👊😔
I was in college when I decided to tie string on my mittens to feed through the coat sleeves. I had lost 3 pair before that and got tired of having to make yet another pair. The amazing thing was, I had a bunch of fellow classmates congratulate me on my idea (yes, I was copied).

In knitting mittens those sheep fluff bits are called "thrums " you add them in as you knit. Probably it would work the same if you are nialbinding. I don't knit mittens because even with cords they get lost quickly and that is a recipe for relationship failure. And yes we are knee deep in snow since November and it is warm today at -20c after a week of extreme cold weather.

This mountain dweller (well valley but the Rockies are all around) has been huddling inside this weekend because it has been too cold to snow. My sheep though are happy as can be. Thankfully it is now above 0F (I think that's -17C) now and snowing again. Come on snow! We need more snowpack!
Meh, I'm right here with you, we need the snowpack, and normally we hit the coldest spot in the nation, and we're not even that. But they got snow in AMARILLO! and a LOT of it!! Guess God felt sorry for all the Texans who couldn't go skiing last year.

Knitted thrummed mittens are also a thing ! I have plans to make a pair for my dad's next bday/or Xmas. You replace a few stitches every row by a bit of very loosely twisted roving, and the insides felt beautifully to make the warmest thing ever.
Hope we get some more snow this winter, didn't even think of checking out Old Town in the snow !
Thank you for the short explanation of how to do the “thrumming” and what it’s called. Will be searching that on the internet for more details if needed. But, I have plenty of roving. So it would work nicely for me.

You know, judging from how many lost gloves and mittens i see laying about on the streets every day, I've often wondered if thats why some items turn up in the archeological and material culture record more often than others. Folks just losing things in amounts that require frequent replacement only to be lost again , rinse and repeat... I can think of how many gloves or mits I've lost over the years myself lol.
I think they would of taken more care not to lose things in the past. Material was much harder to come by. Now a days people don’t think about it when you can get a 4 pack of those horrible stretchy gloves for a couple of bucks.
@@robintheparttimesewer6798 i agree with you that people would be alot more mindful of their possessions in the past from before our throwaway culture was a thing, but I think some items just get lost easier than others, so while its not necessarily like now where at any given time you find 6 sets of kids mittens laying about on the playground every day, I think that over time folks losing a mitten here and there or even a cap in really windy weather would be more prone to happening than losing other items.
@@severerisk1581 yes you’re right. A few minutes after I posted it occurred to me it was stupid. Mothers wouldn’t have made idiot straps for mittens if they weren’t getting lost!! Then I remembered the Time Team episode I watched last night while sewing at one point a piece of a belt was found and had probably been lost by someone walking by 200 years later and wasn’t part of the site. I was going to fix it after I finished what I was doing but instead I will apologize.
@@robintheparttimesewer6798 its all good, no worries)) you have agood point that people were mindful and certainly not as wasteful by any means compared to current society. Im a bit of a pack rat and I often save fittings , screws and all sorts of things for reuse later(I've recognized that I do this to a fault) , and while we don't think much about this now, in the past someone doing this at an old homestead and then it being left and forgotten , generates finds for modern archeologists and researchers to rack their brains over. )
@@severerisk1581 I’m guilty of being a pack rat too. You never know when it will come in handy. Some of it is even organized so that I can find it later. I have recently found the 2 patterns I put together to make hats for my kids. My son told my grandson about the hats so I need to make the next generation silly hats
You could perhaps get rid of the shedding if you felted them a bit more. Just use water and soap and rub your hands together while wearing them. They will also get warmer. Just be careful so that you don’t shrink them too much! My grandma in Finland still did nalbind mittens. My dad swears that those were much warmer than knitted mittens. One day I’ll learn how to make those so that I can make my dad a pair!
I could indeed! Alas, that would have yielded the opposite effect to the one I was after. Would have made things a heck of a lot easier though!

Don’t your neighbours know you’re internet famous and need quiet to do your work? 😂 Growing up here in snowy Canada we had a lot of mittens knitted by our granny, and when we were very little they all had the idiot strings. I sometimes think I should add idiot strings to my mittens now (44 years old) to keep from losing one of every pair I buy.
You know, one of my favorite memories of garb in the real world was driving back from an SCA event in 10th century Norse dress-through nearly a foot of snow and counting. I had to pull off to the side of the road to bust the ice off my windshield halfway home, and a road worker pulled over to see if I was okay-but when he saw how I was dressed in my hangerok, coat, hat, mittens, and all that, he said, "You seen to know what you're doing in the snow," and drove off.
Hey Jimmy come to Canada we have snow!!! Well there are parts that don’t get lots like southern British Columbia but the east coast can get storms that drop a meter or more!

@@NefariousBella yes it is but it’s at elevation so they get snow. Vancouver lower mainland and the southern island get a lot of rain but not much snow. I am in southern Ontario we’re expecting 15 cm (6 inches) by morning which more than usual for the area. But it’s snowing in Texas right now too. Weather is weird
Only reason my ears perked up is I was an avid snowboarder and Whistler has been on my list of musts for decades now lol. I’m south of you in the US. 🤪 we just got the ice storm Texas had.

@@NefariousBella Whistler is amazing. Well worth the visit! We just got hit too and we got more snow than they were calling for. Not to mention the drifts of snow. I will be shoveling this afternoon and arguing with my grandson who tells me he shoveled on the weekend so shouldn’t have to shovel more!! The logic of 7 year olds. Hopefully it’s good packing snow so he can build a snowman!!

As someone who lives in the Mojave desert, snow is something that I never see except from afar, and I LIKE it that way. When someone says to me, "I can't stand the heat" I readily remind them that it's never been so hot that my car ended up in a ditch.
I am still likely to make the mittens, because while we don't get snow, we do get cold, a LOT

Although, snow is considered very Scandinavian, Denmark doesn't get a lot of it. This year has been incredible snowy (been here for the past month or so) Usually, we have a couple of days of technically-snow-but-melts-before-it-hits-the-ground-snow.

I was wondering, in dark age/medieval times, were mittens actually more used than gloves? And would this be related just to a certain degree of proficiency in sewing techniques, or do mittens keep warmer than gloves, or any other reason?

I actually thought about it, but sounded too easy to me, and I've never worn mittens, so I actually had no experience myself 😂 I always think there are multiple reasons contributing to things, especially when talking about history: that's where my question came from
I would assume gloves are much more difficult to make and therefore more expensive. Soooo... poorer people would possibly go for the mittens

Every time I hear you speak welsh at the end of the vid it reminds me that I really should try to find someone else in Glasgow who is a Cymro. I was fluent as a kid, and have pretty much lost it through lack of use since.
I was promised snow and got an incredibly destructive ice storm that cut power out in the entire Portland area (by which I mean miles in every direction, and hundreds of thousands of customers)
I’m happy to watch another of your videos now that I have power and hot water again. Hot cocoa for me today. And eventually I’ll have cleaned up enough fallen tree branches to be able to get out the front door again.
We finally got a decent snow here in Central Indiana last week. We, the "okay Boomers", remember snow "back in the day" when it was worth investing in cross country skis and ice skates. Tip for horrible shedding wool blankets - *cold* wash them in a machine on a heavy duty setting without soap or detergeant, hang them somewhere to dry, then hang them outside and beat the shit out of them (like they used to do with carpets.) THEN! Hand wash them again in slightly more than lukewarm water with hair conditioner (if possible, the stuff for "fine, flyaway hair") and only half-rinse it. The first part should get rid of a lot of the dust already in the wool, and the conditioner will stop the fibres in the wool breaking and shedding so much, and by leaving a little of the conditioner in, it also reduces issues with static (so, for example, making it less likely for any fuzz that does come off to stick to you, or jump into your tea.)
I’m a So Cal native; snow is that stuff we either drive to visit or watch on shows like this. Looks pretty!
greetings from the Chihuahuan desert where currently it is -10C and snowing, which generally only happens two - three days a year, but usually 3 inches or less (>7.62 cm) and today we have 7 inches (17.78cm on the conversion table). All gloves are welcome and necessary today. genuinely glad to see this today.

What you need for mittens is a semi felted ancient shearer’s blanket ( complete with moth holes of authenticity). Lovely and warm, doesn’t need edge finishing, and no shaving needed!
Got my Vanilla Earl/Divine Highlands mix in hand today😁☕ Shame yours got attacked by fluff, though tbf mine always seems to contain a bit of cat hair and I haven't died yet.
I feel the need to make a pair of these mittens now. I've never owned mittens but they seem much easier than making gloves (which suck to make)! We almost never get snow here but it's still quite cold this year and my fingies are crying.

Snow it pretty, but I much rather leave snow for winter vacations!! My area hasn’t had any snow since well before I was born. (Okay, the mountains around me can get snow in the worst cold storms, but I’m in a valley where it doesn’t snow.) we just get rain, and even then not as much of that as we need. We’ve had a series of storms blow through the past couple of weeks, which is good!

Love it! CRUSHED my hand in my youth; some good surgeons fixed it right up. Except when it is cold and damp. I get you. Really messed with my swordplay while I was still fighting. I've got an old flotki rug. It's a bit worn down; but that might be perfect. Too heavy for mittens, but garment wool is definately too light. Thank you for the patterns and ideas! Allow me to counteract the effect of the Scandinavians by saying that here in Dublin, although we were forecast quite a bit of snow, we only got one or two half hearted showers. I only enjoy it for the novelty though, couldn't be hacking months of it :)

We have had beautiful snow here for a glorious week, and yesterday I got to take out my 1910 clothes for a romp through the winter-y landscape as my niece took a few very nice pictures. As of today the temperatures are on the rise and I'm so happy that we were able to do that before everything is back to the usual grey that is winter in the city.
