  • This simple monochrome landscape is great practice for painters of all levels and is suitable for beginners. White can be created in watercolour paintings by revealing the paper underneath. This is called ‘lifting off' and this is what I do in this tutorial using a variety of techniques. For some this can be seen as a finished painting in its own right, or experiment with your own ideas in more complex paintings. I have used Paynes Grey but I think this could also look great in a dark blue such as Indigo Blue or more of a brown grey colour.

This is lovely. I also like the minimalist approach in watercolour, it can be very provocative. Thanks so much.

FYI Bella: Tony Smibert pronounces the ‘i’ in first syllable of his surname not as in ‘nib’ but as in ‘sigh’. Insert an ‘m’ after the ‘s’ in ‘sigh’ and you’ll nail it. And yes, he’s a brilliant artist, a master of watercolour as well as a world expert on Turner’s techniques. He is also a superb teacher.
If you ever get the opportunity to do a workshop with him, grab it. My watercolour technique underwent a major transformation in just 5 days.
Your videos are very good. Great explanations and clear visuals. Thanks for the effort you put into them and for sharing your ideas.

Thank you so much for the tip. I think I probably pronounce other things incorrectly in my videos. Paint names for example! 😊 That is brilliant you did a workshop with him. Are you based in Australia? Is that where you did the workshop? Thank you again!
