I found a kitten whose mother abandoned her. She is the sweetest 2 yr old kitty now, and does this same thing. I think because she was only about 3 or 4 weeks old when we took her in, she missed out on the suckling babies get when nursing.

I feel like tabbies knead so much compared to other cats! There’s a long haired tabby that comes by every now and then and demands pets and suckles on a blank is that I let him lay on, he suckles and starts kneading. But I think he gets abused/treated poorly by his current owner because when I walk in the back of him (vulnerable area) or if I pet his tailbone (also very vulnerable) he gets very very defensive, almost like he expects me to hit him 😢

My 1 year old boy does this every morning. He waits patiently for me to make an ersatz nipple out of a twisted sheet and then nurses for about 10-15 minutes. I give him all the time he wants to do it. ❤❤❤
This orange baby is so sweet 💋💋 its likely he was taken from mama too soon but sometimes it can’t be helped especially if something happened to mama can we just appreciate that this sweet baby has a warm home and bed to sleep in and gets fed and loved now 😻😻🐾🧡🐾🧡🐾🧡🐾

how old is your cat? Our cat Milo (now 7 months) also does the same thing. I believe he was separated from the mother less than 1 month old and this behavior has stuck. he only does this on our velvet blankets
For those that may doubt, I have a 7-year-old Egyptian Mau Tortie Female that does this same thing on the inside seam of a small, Cat Sleeping bag that she uses to sleep on my Desk. Before she goes to sleep, she finds her favorite seam from the inside of the bag to suckle on. I've kept it clean but when I do clean it, I must make sure I rinse the fork out of it otherwise, she will not touch it again. Which may sound like a good idea but she is much more loving and sweet when she has that seam to suckle before she goes to sleep... For the record, she was not taken from her Mother until after 6-seeks-old...I think some cats just love to remain in a small part, a kitten.
Most cats who do this, were weaned from their mother too young. I worked in animal welfare and looked after lots of cats and kittens. A mother cat naturally weans her kittens at 8 weeks and the process is gradual. When a kitten is suddenly taken at 4-6 weeks it feels abandoned. I've also found that these kittens are not good at socialising with other cats , as they didn't really get to play and learn with their siblings. Just my observations

My adult orange and white tabby does this to the blanket I have on my lap. It is so soothing.
I had a black cat which did the same with a black velvetish blanket.
