Pros of the WD My Passport SSD External Portable Drive:
    • Very easy to setup on computer. WD Discovery software is included on the drive, so no need to download anything.
    • In my testing my read speed was 795 MB/s and write was 917 MB/s. This is pretty close to the advertised 1000 MB/s
    • Compatible with USB 3.2, USB-C, and USB-A
    • WD Discovery makes it easy to encrypt(256-bit AES) the drive with a password
    • Very durable design that is shock and vibration resistant.
    • Included back up software is easy to setup and works great.
    • Available in 3 different sizes and colors.
    -Sizes: 500GB, 1TB, & 2TB
    -Colors: Grey, Red, & Blue
Cons of the WD My Passport SSD External Portable Drive:
    • I experienced some software issues where the drive was not recognized by WD Discovery. This was fixed by turning off UAS.
    • Slower speeds when using USB-A connector adapter.

I think the WD My Passport SSD case looks cheap, I'm sorry. But the price is also down to that. The reliability of WD NVMe SSDs is also not really top, only 600 TBW (Terabytes Written) with a 1TB storage. You have also made a nice video of it and there will certainly be people who want this external WD SSD.

This is an excellent external SSD for storage in modern PC gaming as well as PlayStation and Xbox.

After watching this very fine video I thought I'm going to buy this. However, I own a late 2013 iMac. I only have 4-A USB Ports and two early thunderbolt ports. It tells me that if I use the USB A dongle that comes with the USB-C WD, my speed will be cut in half. I understand I can't use the thunderbolt ports. Need a 3 or 4. I've very disappointed. Looks like if I want to buy this WD USB and have it perform at top speed I will have to buy a new Mac. Darn.

What are the speed differences between directly connecting it with a C port and using the USB C to A convertor?

So I need to download the software into my laptops, phones and desktops in order to access this SSD?

    • @GaugingGadgets
      @GaugingGadgets  Před 3 měsíci

No, you can use it like a normal drive without any software. If you want to use the auto back up or encryption features you need the software.

@GaugingGadgets ok thanks. So if one wants to create a password then will need to download the software to whichever device access the SSD ?

Thanks for the good review. I've heard that this runs very hot. Is it true? Also, I supposed there's no added advantage to using the WD Discovery on a mac since I can format it with encryption and use it more easily across a mac and ipad, right? Thanks

To everyone asking of this connects to mobile devices like Android phones, tablets, and iPhones. Yes it does. But don't buy an ssd for it. Your limited to how fast the data transfer is from your mobile device. So you won't even get the full speed of an ssd. It's a 1000mbs ssd and transfer something in a mobile device you will probably only get 50mbps. Your better off getting a USB thumb drive.
