Thank God for these dedicated researchers and native peoples, who value and understand the fragility of these magnificently unique animals. Wish I had their eyelashes. :-) Terrific video; tku, PBS.

Early on in chiropractic school, a teacher had us guess how many vertebrae were in a giraffe's neck. The answer was, "Seven... same as in a human." Years later, I attended an evening in non-violent communication. Two therapists sat side by side, each holding a large, cuddly-looking toy giraffe on their laps.
One therapist explained that, of all the earth's land animals, giraffes had the biggest hearts, and urged us to follow their lead. 😉

There's an amazing scene of two giraffe bulls "necking" in one of the BBC Planet Earth series (narrated by the great David Attenborough!). One of them got slammed so hard that he just toppled over, and his head hit the ground so hard you could hear the impact (they kind of showed his fall in slo-mo). He didn't move for a minute or two (I thought he might be dead), but then suddenly he raised his head, got up on his feet, and walked off as if nothing had happened! It was incredible🦒

I really like this series. I like that it showcases the scientists studying the animals along with the animals themselves, it does not use strange gimmicks like to make them seem like exciting monsters and thing like Nat Geo has been putting out lately. I like that it is also showing animal human conflicts in a complex light. As someone who has lived in rural Africa this feels fair.

There’s an enormous outdoor zoo in the south that you can drive hours through. With my window down, a giraffe stuck his whole head in looking for treats. My hand was full of them so he wrapped his tongue several times around my forearm and grabbed them from my hand as he pulled back. His tongue was black, dry, and felt like sand paper. It was amazing

Great documentary. And agree it's sad that some animals always seem overcooked despite dire circumstances...pangolins is another example. One of the least known but most trafficked. The state of our planet, wildlife, habitat...is really worrying. I hope we realise we must change. We cannot allow our planet and all its beautiful life to be ruined because we think we can keep business as usual going.

    • @annedwyer797

I saw a really shocking photo of a fishing boat that was smuggling pangolin scales, abt 2 tons were on the deck/in the hold. When you consider how light pangolin scales are, since they're made of keratin, it was mind-blowing to think abt how many dead pangolins were represented by 2 tons of their scales. It was really pathetic and disgusting. Sorry, but traditional Asian medicine is really terrible, even if it is a cultural tradition. Much of it is baseless, ineffective, and downright dangerous, and it decimates/abuses the animals it uses.

This is amazing information! Amazing work those who work and been part of this project! Giraffes sound more awesome the more we learn about these beautiful animals. I am so happy there is a team and so forth working together to help these beautiful animals. And of course getting the information about them and ridding misinformation with true information about these animals is highly important! These animals are amazing and really beautiful special animals. :D Amazing documentary.

I believe now that Lions have discovered that they can in numbers take down a Giraffe how much is that contributing to the decline in numbers in these fascinating animals ?

Giraff are so wonderful. Unique among the remaining Megafauna with hippos, rhinos and elephants not being so tall as graceful. I grateful to be alive while the are. Future generations may not be so blessed unless we keep them going.

    Love these majestic beauties.
I’m so glad that there are people dedicated to protecting these creatures. Thanks to all of u involved. 🙏
Ps. It may be frowned upon, but here in Thailand there are zoo’s with Giraffes. I was lucky enough to hand feed one there about 8-9years ago.
Incredible and powerful animals. I felt its neck press my arm against the railing and realised just how strong they are. The tongue was crazy long!!
