      well, walmart's a private property, they get to enforce rules to their customers. it's called shopkeeper's privilege. another example, private property is allowed to disallow guns in the premises, "violating" 2A, or enforce mask rules while inside their premises. my house my rules

      kindof, its a private business so once you enter, you are implicitly signing a contract that you will obey their policies, and if you decide to violate those policies they have a right to ask you to leave, and should you not leave, it would begin to be trespassing.

      @@helium3894 Shopkeepers privilege extends the right to detain someone who has removed goods from the premises without paying. If the employee were doing their job, they would have maintained continuity of evidence and detained Brenden once he left the premises. Obviously, continuity was neither established or maintained as Brenden paid for the item in question.
      Brenden had absolute right to leave the store with the goods he paid for without having to show a receipt or identification.
      Hurting the fragile egos of minimum wage employees may be distasteful but was not grounds for unlawful arrest and assault.

      @@keithziegler8881 wrong, walmart is not a subscription or membership store, there is no policy requiring you to show your receipt, i consistently don't show my receipt at my local walmart regardless if they ask or not. they had millions if not billions of dollars in loss prevention, if you're actually stealing, they saw you do it and didnt do anything about it.
      in this circumstance, the customer showed the OFFICER the receipt and still was put in handcuffs. HUGE nono on the cops behalf.

      Only thing Walmart will do is ban him from coming back. Employees are allowed to ask for receipts on unbagged merchandise, especially electronics.       @@AlexT-md9df It doesn't. No reasonable suspicion of crime, no ID required, no matter the state. There was no reason to suspect he stole the TV. It is always innocent until proven guilty, not "let's assume he's guilty and arrest him first then we'll figure out if he paid". When he paid, that property became his and there is no legal justification for needing to prove it is his property.

    The cop was triggered when Brenden asked if breaking Walmarts policy was breaking the law, because he knew Brenden was right.
    What Brenden was arrested for is commonly known as contempt of cop or failure to boot lick. The fragile bruised ego of the officer that supposedly took an oath to defend the constitution didn’t like being made to look like a chump by this young man.
    I hope Brenden sues the department (and Walmart) for all they have, and gets this tyrant fired.
