  • On the eve of the Ukraine aid vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, Ukrainian frontline gunners told RFE/RL that they would lose the war without more ammunition. The troops say their artillery is the main thing keeping Russian tanks from overrunning Ukrainian infantry.

The US is testing similar defensive weapons and should do that as well.
This is win-win-win; UA gets a valuable defense against Russia's attacks, and the UK and US military+contractors get real-world testing of the systems.

The problem with Ukraine, by the frontline soldiers own admission, has never been a lack of artillery ammunition contrary to what pundits and the ISW have constantly allege. Their real problem is lack of adequately trained soldiers. It is apparent as evidenced by stories of Ukrainian units either surrendering or bailing out of their positions in retreat. Russia has virtually an inexhaustible supply of trained combat personnel and easily outstrips Ukraine’s ability to recruit/conscript soldiers. In the final analysis it doesn’t matter how many shells Ukraine gets if there is no one to shoot them.

Apples to oranges. An extremely light 155 towed artillery piece is a very different device compared to a far more complex, and heavy self propelled and self loading artillery piece. Those self propelled guns being far more complex to replace parts/repair as well as heavy also make it difficult to hide. Very expensive to lose besides being very easy to damage. It has its critical role but light, easy to field and maintain artillery has its special role. Finally, cost - the American M777 is very low cost compared to self propelled so there are far more of them.

What irritates me is, the focus is on "other countries to do xyz", I don't know what world this is but in most societies if you want something done right and dependable, you HAVE to do it yourself.
Aid is temporary and will run out again, where is this Ukrainian ingenuity? two+ years into full scale; and production is not into overdrive? need more? build more factories and keep building. Production is KEY, expecting handouts will lead to defeat.
I don't "expect" AFU to hold back or even defeat ruzzia, hell I expect Baltics and Poland to be invaded and western forces to enter this conflict. Zero expectations on AFU, if they can defeat or what ever the end objective is?, great that's a bonus. But my expectations are none.
Sidenote: I don't have access to intelligence but I truly feel as Ukraine leaders have been holding back supplies and depending on western political support is how much they allow to the frontline. I feel the frontline are doing the best they can with what they are given. Leaders are really good at diverting accountability onto others

Don't you think the Ukrainians are doing everything they can? Against a superior force like Russia it will never be enough, you have to get assistance from others just like the allies needed assistance during WW2. Nobody can weather the storm alone, together we're strong.

In in the US, desperate to increase shell production it's now been two years and production here is barely twice the original (and very low rate) production of 155 shells. A new facility is being built and isn't on line at all. It takes a huge infrastructure to produce shells and far more to create a new production line.

Horses for courses. For starters, during the mud season (i.e. right now) towed artillery is much lighter in weight and easy to transport. M777 was designed to be airlifted, you can't do that with self-propelled arty. Not having an engine it won't break down, and doesn't need fuel.
TLDR: the 'best' depends on your criteria.
