It’s a great idea to watch both the video and the dance practice for one song together! Each member of SHINee is interesting in his own way, but together they make up a unique and inimitable combination! How I love SHINee’s amazing polyphony and original dance patterns! Peerless experimenters and inventors! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💎💎💎💎💎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Of course we can always watch dance practices for songs we have reacted to before, but I think Lucifer is such a special case that it came to be this way. Glad you liked it!

In SHINee's "Lucifer" MV the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles.
In the MV you see them trying to fight against Lucifer's powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot. For example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them, and they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc.
FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform "Lucifer" live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D When they explain to people how to do that move they say you have to "tense all your muscles and then pretend like you are being startled."
LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs. The group would dance around a fancy car to show off their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic.
"Lucifer" was released in 2010 -- more than 13 years ago -- so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then, in part because everyone was following SHINee's lead. Just take a look at TVXQ's, Super Junior's, Infinite's or 2PM's MVs, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with "Lucifer."
I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. That is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique. You only wish you were brave enough to look as cool as they do in this MV. ;)
SHINee are icons for everything they do including their fashion and hairstyles. They don't look like that because they didn't care, their hairstyles and clothing choices were chosen because they wanted to stand out. Everything SHINee does is trendsetting and because of their experimental concept, they are intentionally meant to do something that no one else is doing in order to create the next trend. Nothing SHINee ever does will be the same and they tackle a new genre of music, dance and fashion with EVERY song they release, including within the a single album. They are the group that the rest of the industry pays attention to as a guide for what the next trends will be in the Kpop industry.
SHINee are also known for never being afraid to experiment with everything they do, including their style, and as the fashionista and literally a stylist for the group, Key is always looking for ways to be unique, so what you see is his hair was bleached blond on the side and then shaved down to his scalp. He is known for always wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool.
This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair. Taemin may not talk about loving or hating his hairstyles, but he has no problem laughing about their past looks. In the last few years he has learned to embrace his androgynous side and he often still wears hair extensions in his MVs and concerts, just check out his solo MV "Advice" or his blond hair during SHINee's "Hard," etc.
Fun fact: One reason why Minho has super short hair in "Lucifer" is because SHINee's comeback before this was for their song "Ring Ding Dong" and during that comeback everyone had long rocker hairstyles. Minho hated his long hair, but he was forced to live with it for several months because it was part of their promotions. (Minho says he hadn't cut his hair since debut, so in "Ring Ding Dong" era he had been growing his hair out for more than a year.) Therefore, I have a feeling, the minute he was finally able to cut his hair he decided to go really short for "lucifer", and he has refused to grow his hair out long ever since. ;P
In this MV, Taemin had just turned 17. Onew and Jonghyun are 20 and Key and Minho are 18.
If you want to see where SHINee truly shines, you have to check out a performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, czcams.com/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/video.html, and/or their "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" set at their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul in 2016, czcams.com/video/mtFK7FxKdLs/video.html. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it. If you think Jonghyun's long high note was amazing in the MV, just wait to see what he can do live.
As Es said, "Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise, which are designed to hit every beat of the song. (They actually refer to that tutting formation as a bug or worm. Their arms are supposed to look like the legs of a creature.) And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," czcams.com/video/-TLCK7KbLus/video.html and czcams.com/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/video.html. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our most difficult and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D

As Es mentioned, SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice video was the very first dance practice video ever in the Kpop industry to be released specifically for fans. They had never made a dance practice video that wasn't just for them to watch, so to SHINee this was just a dance practice, it wasn't a performance video like what you see in "dance practice" videos today. SHINee is the group that started the dance practice video trend, and they are why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D This video was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then, dance practice videos were usually only filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience, and it most definitely wasn't meant to be an MV quality production. But SM realized that fans were starting to copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to follow suit and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too. Just another way, SHINee influenced the industry and changed Kpop forever. :D
However, to SHINee, even still today, dance practices are really just dance practices. They save their energy for where it counts, for MVs and live performances. What you saw in their dance practice is only a fraction of what this dance is really like. They are experts when it comes to maintaining stable vocals while dancing 110% for hours on end. People never really understand why "Lucifer's"choreography gets so much hype, until they see SHINee perform it live. That is why SHINee are live performance legends.
Back in the day when we watched a dance practice we always knew when it was an SM artist because of that iconic cloud wallpaper. The cloud background in all of SM's most iconic dance practice videos is classic SM.

I'm not going to lie. I ended up watching them in the videos more than I listened to you two. Sorry! I'll have to rewatch this in a minute to actually listen completely to what you were saying.
There's just something so iconic about this song. I've loved it for five years, and it never gets old. I love the crazy outfits, even Key's hair seems to fit when you look at the whole picture. Taemin's dancing always shines, so even the trippy t-shirt doesn't bother me. Why Jonghyun wore anything other than a black tank top is beyond me. He looks amazing in it.

That is normal I think! I watch reactions myself a lot and sometimes I zone in on the MV/performance itself also. Plus Lucifer is very hypnotizing in it's ongoing rhythm I think!
