CLASSIC! I've been a DJ for over 40 years and I remember first seeing this 12 inch cover in the record store and I was pissed! I had an idea of performing with a group of DJ's and calling them my turntable orchestra. I wanted them in the boxes with their turntables and my initials on the front of the box like Lawrence Welk had for his orchestra. Once I heard this joint...can't front...wasn't mad no more. He beat me to the idea and on top of that, the track, the rhyme is PERFECTION! THIS IS HIP HOP MUSIC LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Big ups to Mixmaster Gee & the Turntable Orchestra...M-A-N-I-P-U LATOR!

....but therein lies the problem. The rappers today threw away the fundamentals of the genre to make a quick buck and get a little fame. They are simply ignoring the basics of what makes the genre amazing. Thats like Lebron and Steph Curry ignoring the skills, talent and fundamentals displayed by Jordan, Ewing, Irving and the other legends of the game.

Ah YEAH! Take me back to the days when DJ's busted their behinds scratching on real vinyl. Back when one slip or skip separated the pros from the scrubs.
Back when scratching was just as important as the verse AND the hook. That is, if the scratchin wasn't ALREADY the hook.
Hip Hop started with just the DJs. Then they delegated the lyrics to the MCs. Then the MCs became the focal point and the DJs slid into the background. Now, we see MCs but where are the DJs in moderern Hip Hop?
I literally grew up in the 80's (being born in 1970) and I remember my moms calling rap "the devil's music." Now we have people 60+ years old rapping!
But back to the DJ's. Back in the day, the old school crews made sure the DJ got his props. I used to wonder about that. Why DJ names came first in the title of some artists...
Rockmaster Scott &..., Grandmaster Flash &..., DJ Jazzy Jeff &..., Jam Master Jay Run DMC.......
Scratchin did just what it's name meant. It got that itch I had when listening to old school rap. I think it evolved or dissolved into the foundations of hip hop over time. Hip hop would not be the same (if it were here at all) were it not for the creative brothers finding new ways to entertain in the streets of NYC.
So, if you got nothing better to do after reading all of this, just listen to "The Show" by Dougie Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew, featuring Slick Rick. Right around 2:33, you'll hear some of the smoothest scratches ever. Like an exacto knife through butter. LOL. Peace!!
