Blessed be the day, and the month, and the year, and the season, and the time, and the hour, and the moment, and the beautiful country, and the place where I was joined to the two beautiful eyes that have bound me: and blessed be the first sweet suffering that I felt in being conjoined with Love, and the bow, and the shafts with which I was pierced, and the wounds that run to the depths of my heart. Blessed be all those verses I scattered calling out the name of my lady, and the sighs, and the tears, and the passion: and blessed be all the sheets where I acquire fame, and my thoughts, that are only of her, that no one else has part of
The thought of Villazon attempting this is SCARY!!! No one can touch Pav. Period, end of story. Villazon slaughtered "Pourquoi me Reveiller," so can you visualize him singing this? God, that's painful to even think about.
@eyestrained07 Just as he proved the "experts' wrong when they said Neapolitan songs MUST be sung at full voice throughout by singing a verse of O' Sole Mio in pianissimo. In the same song, again he proved the "experts" wrong who said male singers could not trill! I have the feeling that most "experts", and everyone else quickly learned never to tell Pava he couldn't do things--lol

There are a number of very fine recordings of the 3 Petrarch Sonnet settings by less well-known singers. A particular favorite of mine is that of American tenor John Aler: czcams.com/video/IYwJMVN73_g/video.html (Also, I really wish baritones like Quasthoff would sing Liszt's later, low-voice version rather than transposing the original tenor one down, which always makes the piano part sound wrong.)

Gedda was well into his 60s when he finally got to record Liszt's songs. The voice had thickened considerably, and despite his admirable technique, there were some intonation issues. What a pity EMI, for whom he recorded a great deal in all sorts of repertoire, never caught him in his 30s or 40s... he was marvelously suited to this music, and could have handled with ease the German, French and Italian linguistic demands, not to mention Liszt's single settings of Russian, Hungarian and English!
Unfortunately, Gedda didn't record this or any other song by Liszt until he was well past his prime; listening to his two CDs of Liszt songs are an exercise in "if only..." Such was the shameful neglect by performers and recording companies of this great repertoire.
Liszt,Petrarch and Pavarotti what a trio!
There is no way I could love this man any more than I do right now. He IS the God of tenors.
Maraviglioso il maestro Pavarotti , BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!
No words for the Master!! Pure gold!!
When Pav squints his eyes, you know it's going to be something spectacular... and this is!

Stunning performance! He gave everything he had in the moment, can anyone else hear him gasping for breath at the end??
En live
Fabulous - a real discovery - was looking for the original vocal versions of these, knowing the piano versions very well, and there was Pavarotti!
This is so amazing! He even sang with a tishue in his hand! :D
Veramente la Piu brava interpretazione lírica di Litz, Tutto.
Scusate, Pavarotti e' semplicemente grande.
OH MY GOD
Sublime Pavarotti! Genial!
Simplesmente impecável.

Ginotti, do you know of somewhere this video can be purchased? Thanks!
He's wonderful...
I've heard versions by Gedda, Kraus, Quasthoff, and others. I like them all but this easily tops them all by a mile. And I'm not a huge Pavarotti fan.

There you have a reason to be now! ;)
Every time someone dislikes this, I favourite this lol
Bravo Luciano

Normally I'd agree but I stand by my opinion :P I heard Gedda's recording of this and it didn't do much for me ;p
I'm a huge Pavarotti fan but nobody tops Gedda in this type of music:)

Pavarotti was (is) the one and only. But you should try and listen to this too:
czcams.com/video/ekozuyKggMY/video.html (Santago Ballerini)
Listen to Kaufmann, all three sonnets (on CZcams). Tears streaming every time I listen. His voice and emotion -- heavenly.
