i grew up hearing the Troop version on the radio. as a lifelong MJ fan, i never knew the Jackson 5 did this song first. when i bought the Jackson 5's Moving Violation album, i saw the title of this song in the track listing, but i never thought it was the same song. i was stunned. i had a "really?!!" smirk on my face as i sat listening in disbelief at what i was hearing. Michael Jackson and the brothers did this song first. wow. and here i thought i heard everything. . .

I think the Troop cover was so good for 2 reasons: 1. They didn't deviate to much from the original version. They really stayed in that pocket. 2. The track itself was at least a decade ahead of its time. It was made for 1990 when Troop did it. But that Michael...he will give you a sweet R&B ballad.

This song was the Jackson 5's last charted single before they left Motown.
If you look closely, you'll notice Jermaine is not performing with them during this Soul Train performance. Jermaine was the only member who decided to stay with Motown. With this move, Randy officially replaced Jermaine. Michael Lovesmith (who sang background vocals for Luther on his 1990 "Any Love" album) co-wrote this song with Brian Holland of the legendary songwriting trio Holland-Dozier-Holland. Michael Lovesmith also produced this song.
Multi-instrumentalist Chuckii Booker produced Troop's cover version. Their version reached #1 on R&B singles like damonfisher commented, and it peaked at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100.
What a way to pay homage to probably the most talented young boy band ever. Troop sang this with so much heart & soul. Thanks, Jack, for paying homage to this original & cover in one reaction.

Thanks for the history of this song. I was a little kid when it was released and actually got a free copy of it because I had a temper tantrum because my mom didn't buy the record for me that day. lol The manager felt bad and gave me the single for free. I remember watching them actually perform this song too. Troop did a great cover of this as well, but the original has special childhood memories for me.

WOW, thanks for doing this, Jack.🌟 I think I anticipated this one the most of all. I really appreciate it. Such a special reaction when any member of the Jackson Family sings/performs, as fans, we are so honored. I really like both songs. Troop really did their thing on this cover, but you just can't deny Michael's vocals on the original & just acknowledging each & everyone of them should be done more, like you said these young boys were doing it all: singing, dancing, playing instruments - just legendarily talented.

The song was originally issued as a B-side to the Jackson 5's disco version of the Supremes' "Forever Came Today" in June 1975. That month, the group announced that they would leave Motown for Epic Records, however, they still remained under contract to Motown until March 1976.[2] Jermaine Jackson, the song's second co-lead vocalist, left the group and remained with Motown, with Randy Jackson officially replacing him. (Credit: Wikipedia)
That is why, even though you see "5 brothers" on stage - that is not the original "Jackson 5" (it is minus Jermaine... but plus Randy on bongos). However, you can still hear Jermaine's contributing vocals on the track in this Soul Train performance.

Great reaction. Both songs are dope. I first heard Troops version back in 89 when it came out not knowing it was a cover then shortly after Heard J5's version. Both are dope in their own right. You can tell and Troop has said this before they were influenced by MJ and you can hear it in the vocals. Also shouts out to Chuckii Booker on production on Troops Version. Chuckii doesn't nearly get the props he deserves as a songwriter, arranger and producer.

So glad you’re reviewing this song!
It’s one of my top 5 J5 favs!
Michael sings his azz off on this one!
Fun fact that I don’t think you caught… The vocal besides, Michael’s was Jermaine, who had just left the group. That’s when they brought Randy in to take his place.
You continue to surprise me with how astute you are about this music for someone, so young… And I agree with you about the J5 being underrated as a group… and not just back up for Michael.

What about their version do you like more? I grew up in the early 90s and it seems like ppl are more familiar with the Troop version, it might be more nostalgic, so they prefer it. To me, they did too many runs and just too much in general. You prefer that part?
