HOW I WASH MY CLOTH DIAPERS ‣‣
Detergent I Use
‣ amzn.to/2LstuUU
After each pocket diaper use I pull out the insert and stick the pocket diaper and insert in the diaper pail. This just makes it really easy to dump it all into the washer when it's time to clean them. I try to wash my diapers every 2 to 3 days.
1. COLD WASH
I dump all my diapers and inserts into our top load washer along with the reusable diaper pail liner and any used wet bags. I add a very small amount of detergent (about a tablespoon) I set the water load to the highest option (SUPER for my washer), select COLD water and I use a gentle, fast setting. The purpose of the cold wash is to remove any solids or poo, so you just want a setting where it rinses out the diapers well.
2. HOT WASH
Second wash is a hot wash to clean the diapers. I change my water setting to HOT and select a longer cycle wash that has a good rinse cycle to make sure there is no detergent left in the diapers.
3. DRYING
I choose to dry mine in the dryer, but many people opt to hang dry them. My dryer selections are LOW heat for about 50 minutes. That's what seems to work best for my dryer.
HOW TO REMOVE CLOTH DIAPER STAINS ‣‣
Sun bleaching! Just take a clean, but stained diaper and get the area with the stain (or the whole diaper - doesn't matter) and place the wet diaper in direct sunlight. Usually takes about an half hour or hour for the stain to completely disappear! Super easy and works like a miracle!

I do cloth wipes and love them! I put them in a wipes warmer with water and essential oils and just wash them with my diapers so it's actually easier than disposables since we throw them in the diaper wet bag too. They work so much better than disposable wipes and we are saving money and being good to the environment!
Brett Hastings I love the warm idea! I’m going to have to try it!
What oils do you use on them? What cloth do you use?
@@brittanygreen4101 I use Grovia wipes and after a trying a few different things for the solution I've most recently gotten Balm! Baby Juice Those Wipes concentrate from the Nicki's Diapers website and am really happy with it. I kept switching things up because the wipes started to smell musty; this doesn't seem to be a problem so far. Also, if you decide to buy a wipes warmer check out Facebook Marketplace or any other used sites; I found a ton of great condition ones and was able to purchase two of them for just $5 each.
Brett Hastings what kind of essentials I’m interested in this method
Brett Hastings you need to be extremely careful with essential oils. many of them (like lavender, citrus, eucalyptus and peppermint) are irritants, which can be especially bad for the sensitive diaper area
I don’t have kids, nor plan to, but I’m watching this just cuz I like watching you and Harriet. That kale! 😆
same! Have not changed a diaper since I was twelve years old and never plan on it....but Kitty & Harriet are too lovable!
This video was super helpful! I will be using disposable for the first few weeks and then jumping into cloth. Thanks for all the tips!
Watching her with that kale toy is TOO MUCH 🤗☺️😍
Lol I know! Smarter than toy keys 🔑, which do not belong in the mouth IRL. I never would have thought.
Great video!! I'm expecting a little one in Feb and planning to do cloth with her!
I have heard a lot of people just use those cheap little wash clothes as cloth wipes, you could always use those to see if you like them instead of investing in pricey cloth wipes!
Kitty you are beyond inspirational to me! You come across very down to earth, and seem to go with the flow so much. Trying to channel those vibes into my life! TTC now, and want to cloth diaper, will save this video and rewatch later 😁
I use bum genius too and love it! Cloth diapering has been so much easier than I expected.
I just started cloth diapers. I bought 35 from my friend who used them on both her girls. They’re bum genius brand - a combo of all in ones and pocket ones. I love them. I got them for $140 for the lot.
My husband also is a little reluctant but I’m doing them daily and using disposable at night.
Thank you for this video!!! I love this! First time mom here getting ready to start the cloth diaper adventure. The resources you provided were super helpful!
I did it with both of my children and I loved it
She’s such a calm, even-tempered little baby! Such a joy!
Thank you for this video! Very informative and easy to understand.
Thank you! Finally someone who explains the whole process and EVERYTHING you need to know lol.
I was already excited to subscribe to your channel, but then I saw you use one of my favorite diaper creams ever (the babo naturals one with the bunny) and THEN I heard you mention Farmhouse on Boone, and I was like, "Yessss!"
I'm such a huge fan of her; been subscribed/following her for over a year. Excited to gain some new inspiration from you as well! Also, I live in Minnesota too and I love getting your state-specific tips for baby care! Winter does limit us a bit, doesn't it.... But I wouldn't want to live anywhere else! 😁
Thid video has been the best video ive watch about cloth dipers, you explain very well and thts a great help. Thinking about using them with my second baby 😁
Awww. This is great. I just had a baby in Iowa and I admit I wish we could be friend IRL.
We use cloth wipes for our son and disposable diapers. He’s potty training now and I’m expecting a baby girl in January, and think I want to do all cloth for diapers too. Thanks for the video!
Great informative video, thank you. I've just started cloth diapering my 6 week old baby boy.
You really remind me of Zooey Deschanel from the movie Yes Man. I don't know if anyone has told you that before but I think she's great. The way you speak and you features are very similar to me. 😊
I really liked the video, will totally give it a shot when I have kids!
This is seriously the most helpful video I have ever seen.
I love old school names! My daughter is named Diana!
Thanks for sharing this! Would love to see an update once she has transitioned to solids after a while. I don't have kids yet but my husband and I are in "planning mode" right now. I like the idea of cloth diapering but he doesn't and I think it's mostly because of solids!
My husband and I are also in "planning mode" lol. It's nice to know we're not alone, not having kids yet but wanting to try and prepare to an extent.
Literally same. Husband and I are trying. I like the idea, he doesn’t. I was cloth diapered in the late 80’s but my parents just pinned cloth rags around me and hired a laundry service to come get them, wash them and bring them back. 🤣 I’d love an update when she gets to solids. P.S. she is so cute!
Here at home we’re in trying mode as well, but my husband was immediately on board with cloth diapers! He just said “buying diapers once and never buying them again? Let’s do it”
Olivia Van Zimmerman exactly!
This is the most helpful cloth diapering video I've found, thank you 🙏
BumGenius are my favorite too! I also love the Alva Baby ones on Amazon though! I bought most of mine second hand as well!
Shawna Rae I’m glad to hear that people like this brand, my partner and I picked up some from a buy/sell group and I’m glad we picked good ones! We are due in September
Thank you so much! We just started cloth diapering, baby is 6 weeks old, and we weren’t sure if we needed to be spraying off every liner and diaper cover. A lot of videos I have found don’t cover that portion of cloth diapering. Thanks!!!
Such a thorough & sweet video . Too think your gorgeous girl is now 5+ years old from the time of this video is crazy !
All grown up & likely in school now .
How wonderful to have these videos to look back in time .
Thank you .. your so genuine & kind & a wonderful , stunning Mom.
I look forward to going through your videos , to current especially to see your princess grown up.
Much love to you & Happy 2024 to you & your beautiful family ❤
~ Kim from Palm Beach , Florida
the baby is like "yeah these are the best *waves hands* they're super comfy and its changed my life, definitely recommend" *waving hands*
For someone that knows nothing about cloth diapers, this was difficult to follow. I didn't understand the differences and the pros and cons.
Abby Nurre it is super confusing. It’s best to start slow! It comes easier with time
Yes difficult to follow and her voice is so boring & talks so slow. 20min for a how to, get to it. Im outta here.
Abby Nurre too much information but at the same time she didn’t say what i think beginners need to know
there isn't any.... just as harmful to the environment as disposables.
Abby Nurre I agree
Thank you so much for this video it was very informative
Thanks for the video! Your little munchkin is super cute 💕
I just picked up 20 diapers and inserts today for 50$ for my 5 month old. Have been dealing with yeast infections and rashes ever since she was a month old. Have tried every diaper out there to no avail. Hope these diapers help. Very helpful video!!!! Thanks!!
Great video, thank you !
Honestly the fact that you were sitting right there with your 5 months old baby sharing your life and experience is just priceless..
I found your video so easy to follow because you spoke like a person who was new to cloth diapering like me. You followed my question pattern lol
Great great information 🤗🤗
Thanks a lot for the info. I am pregnant and I will try cloth diapering for the first time hope it works for me too!
Fluffloveuniversity.com is an amazing resource. They also have a fb page for any questions called fluff love & CD science
Really helpful video! Can you make an updated video about how you deal with solid poops? What kind of liners did you find helpful and so forth?
DuckyHellBird I’m obviously not her but, solid poops are easier in my opinion. You can just dump it in the toilet and there’s less mess left in the cloth diaper itself so it almost always all comes out when you soak them. Newborn/infant poop was harder to clean.
Omg the thumbnail is so cute!!!! :D
Hi Kitty! I was wondering why you do a cold wash then a hot wash?
I read that cold water breaks down protein like urine, so I’ve been exclusively washing in cold, wondering if I should do two washes, one hot.
hello, we're thinking about doing this too, i have a question about travel though, what do you pack when on airplane? wondering if we end up using disposable diapers on travel will baby not be very happy from the transition. thank you!
Harriet is so pretty 😍
So, do you put poppy nappies straight into the washing machine x
The research stage can make it feel so overwhelming, you really just have to start to know whether its your thing. All good advice!
When do you differentiate between using the all in ones versus the pocket diapers? Could I exclusively use the all in ones?
OMG. Your babe is so adorable!!!
You remind me so much of Zooey Deschanel ❤️ haha but anyway thank you for this informative video!
She's the great value Zooey Deschanel
Came here to say the same thing
I was actually reading the comments to see if someone else already wrote it ahaha, she does look alike
when you are out and about with the pocket diapers do you just change the wet insert with a dry one and keep her in the same pocket diaper or do you change her to a totally fresh pocket diaper?
Getting the waterproof cover has changed the experience for me [& bb] immensely!!
So for washing them, do you rinse them off before putting into the washing machine? I’m nervous about all that human waste in a washing machine 😱
Elizabeth Maniphanh I don’t. At least now why she’s exclusively breastfeed but when she starts eating a lot of solids I’ll use those flushable liners to remove most of the waste before washing
They also make sprayer attachments that kind of look like bidets for your toilet. A lot of people rinse them into the toilet and then throw them in the wash. You can wash them right in the bag you throw them in, too.
Human waste is water soluble....so dump the poop first and wash youll live
What if your washing machine doesn't have a setting for pre rinse? @JoLynKell California
Clean the most poop you can first than rinse in running water to take out whatever rests staid and after just put on the washing machine with detergent. I wash mine at 60°Celsius and I use the Ariel washing detergent but there are all kinds of nappy deodorants/detergents. I just love the Ariel smell 😂
Im going on my 3rd baby and due to financial situations i want to cloth diaper and this video has helped me tremendously thank you
I don’t have kids yet...but soon!! Was researching cloth diapering and think it’s for us and our lifestyle. I’m from the Minneapolis area as well, wondering if you looked into the local services at all?
Paige Elizabeth I did but it’s so easy to wash myself so I went that route!
We use separate baby wash clothes for the wipes, and it works extremely well us
Is there an update for the cloth diapers after solids?
I am here for the baby. So so cute😘😘😘😘😍😍🤩🤩 BTW you look nicer in this short hair style
Thanks a lot for the video. Please give an update on how the liners worked :)
Sumaia Sarwar will do!
Hi Kitty, so happy that you made such an informative video on this ! I'm waiting for my first child too (31 weeks) and really want to try the cloth diapers, ones the little one is there, so thanks for these tips ;) So far I ordered the BumGenius flip and the Milovia Prefolds, since I have lots of muslin cloth diapers from my mom i can use as inserts. We'll see how it works out, i also get some All-in-ones from a friend, to check out the "other system". Wow, what another universe parenthood is 😆 Thanks for having such a chilled and true approach on this 👍
HelloB congrats!! I’d highly recommended cloth diapering! I think the hardest part is finding the style/system that works for you
Hi thank you for this! Extremely helpful in so many ways! For the sunning, this is something you do before you actually wash the diapers? I want to be as non toxic as possible and was blown away by the fact that no bleach is involved to get rid of stains!
Hi, I'm trying to sell my entire stash for $300. My only use for couple months. Baby sitter did not like to use cloth diaper. So i had to give up. 4 grovia all in ones
2 grovis hybrid shells.
4 grovia inserts
2 blueberry aio
2 bluberry covers
3 best bottom covers
3 best bottom hemp inserts
3 best bottom bamboo inserts
1 best bottom regular inserts
1 button diaper shell will insert
2 bum ware extremes
4 alba diapers
And more inserts, let me know if you are interested. Contact me dfatema84@gmail.com
I can't wait to cloth diaper my baby due in May, I cloth diapered my son.
I have your video saved for when I have children. Thank you for posting this. 🥰
You two girls are so cute 💟
Which one fits for newborn.??
Our girl is 7m and we're just now starting to cloth diaper too, im SO excited
I heard you need spray and then let them soak between days of washing? I'm considering cloth diapering and am curious how they hold up sitting "dry" in the pail for the 2ish days? Thanks in advance!! :)
I think it's also more comfortable for baby. 👍
Do all in one diapers have the inserts too? I just bought the pocket diapers and I'm not a huge fan of them.
I just subscribed! Thanks for the video! P.s. where is your couch from? I really like it!
Harriet is too cute
I am trying to find the liners with the snaps on them to be adjustable but no luck.
What ones do you use and can you also add them to the information please
Harriet's onesie is the cutest! Where is it from?
We ripped up a couple second hand flannel sheets and use those as wipes with just some water to dip them in. I strongly beleive wipes are why babys get most diaper rash. We also have water wipes and they are fine but it takes so many to cleanup the poop vs the rag wipes
2-3 year preparing my brain, body, and lifestyle before we try for children. I also want to be a doula. So everything that I can learn to help other mamas, be sustainable, and budget friendly helps.
Wanting to get into full time young animal fostering as well. So the wipes are a great idea for the baby creatures as well
when i have kids i want to use cloth diapers with disposable liners while i'm at home and when we're out and about i'll just use disposable diapers
Good idea I agree!
That’s my plan too. I mean who wants to lug around a poopy/pissy diaper while you’re at the mall or the beach. lol
Cute baby!
Do you pull the inserts out when you wash them? Or do you leave them in? First time trying. So far for usage today the pocket was nicer. The snap ins I thought was a waste of my time. lol. The entire thing and she’ll was soaked
I wanted cloth diapers to work for us so bad. My son had such bad eczema, the moisture of the cloth diapers aggravated it so much, hoping that if I'm able to have another baby i'm able to re use them.
Does anyone know any cheap websites to buy cloth diapers?
Great video! Ps. I love Farmhouse on Boone too😊
That kale teether company should give you a free veggie teether because you kind of are advertising for them in this video. I didn't know that something so cute existed, I definitely will be purchasing this. Thanks to you and Harriet for showing us this great teether. How is the quality on it (since it seems to be sort of pricey)? Does it seem like she can bite off pieces when she gets 1 or 2 teeth popping out?
Are you able to wash the white diapers with colored diapers without having the color stain the white? I bought some orange, gray and the off white color (all bum genius) and am afraid that the colors will mess up the white.
Hannah Van Dorn I think you can as long as you don’t use bleach
we directly went for prefolds from birth and we where surprised how easy it was
Where did you get that Kale teether??? 🤔
If I had a dollar for every time she says “cloth diaper” in this video lol
Hopefully you see this but do you use cloth or disposable diapers when out of the house ?
She said in the video, she takes her cloth diapers and her wet bag with her when she's out and about.
I live in an apartment and our only choice of wash is a really old machine that has no setting choices (and costs $2 per wash) or a small automatic spin wash that I have to fill with water and empty by hand. I really want to cloth diaper but everyone's wash cycle requires a higher tech machine. Do you think it would be possible to still cloth diaper without an insane amount of effort or mess?
gracesquared1 I barely ever comment but, I was in your same situation when my daughter was little and I just decided to suck it up and hand wash them and honestly it was not bad. It took me like max 20 minutes, they were clean as can be. For drying them I hung dry on a clothes line so bought on amazon and installed it over the bathtub so any excess water would just drip into the tub. For washing I used a washboard. I honestly felt like I was in the 1900’s but, it worked and even now I still do it and we have a washer and dryer in our house.
Do you spray your diapers off before you wash them?
Poopy diapers you spray off in the toilet or you can use liners and toss it.
If she poops when you’re out, what do you do? Just throw it all into the wet bag?
What kind of pacifier is that? My little one doesn't like them at all but right now it would help if she took them.. (because I'm going back to work)
It looks like an Avent pacifier.
Harriet has beautiful eyes!!
So you don’t rinse the diapers in a sink before at all?
When a baby is exclusively breastfed the diapers can go right into the washing machine because the poop is water soluble. Once they get solid food or if their formula-fed then you have to spray the poop off in the toilet before doing it in the washing machine. Diaper sprayers are in my opinion a necessary thing for cloth diapering. Although some people just dunk and swish in the toilet.
Do you have to wash the entire diaper after the baby wets it, or is there a way to remove the insert and put a new one in?
I put the insert on the outside of the diaper (not into the pocket) insert and it usually keeps the diaper dry, and sometimes I'll put a thin cloth diaper over the insert, and snap diaper over both. It's bulky looking, but it works.
I'm sorry if you answered this and I totally missed it, but how many cloth diapers did you guys start with? :)
Ashley Ham she said she used disposable diapers during the newborn stage, then bought 6 at first which she washed every night while trying to figure out which type she liked. Then she bought more and now has about 30-35.
@@mariahgreen8547 Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! We are expecting our first and appreciate all the advice and tips :)
How many times a day do you wash them. Sounds like more money
Plan on starting cloth diapering soon. Thank you for your tips! Also, where did the kale tether come from? I love that. Baby girl is adorable☺️
Do you have to teach/show people how to use cloth diapers when babysitting? We’re wanting to use cloth diapers but my mom has said she won’t use them cause she doesn’t like them..
Susi Kuczka my mom has also refused to use cloth diapers 😅 we plan on keeping disposable on hand for our parents, babysitters, etc.
Do clothes diapers give your baby a rash?
Do you have a link for the new changing pad? Thanks for all the info, Kitty!
Stephanie Mattiuzzo I’ll add it!
My daipers become soaked. What an I doing wrong?
Check out fluff love & CD science! They answer any questions about cloth diapering
They are on fb
Where did you get the kale toy? Lol
Does she really show us "how to cloth diaper......" ?
I want but I'm scared to ask my mom
