BTW, the reason English works so well as a world language is you mispronounce it greatly but will still be understood by native speakers if you get the CONSONANTS right, you can mangle the vowels all day long and still get your message across. That means emphasize the ch’s, the final s’s, t’s, n’s, etc. when I taught English in Thailand I always had a rubber snake in my hand which I would wiggle in my student’s face when they failed to pronounce the final sssssssssss! Languages like Thai, Japanese, Spanish are very vowel oriented, English is like German and mandarin, a box of rocks and snakes!

This totally explains why I am so bad at crossword puzzles! My worst problem is with vowel sounds. My mom was a first generation English speaker. Her dad was Polish, her mom Russian. But each of her parents were bilingual Polish-Russian. My mom grew up in Dorchester, MA but went to Polish Catholic school thru high school. She came to California in 1944. I grew up in the SF Bay Area. My dad was a grandchild of German-English ancestry. My stepdad was Yiddish-German. I have a messed up accent for sure! However, I believe my San Francisco influence is the strongest. I’d love to have a linguist figure out my accent!

I'm an American who has lived in Europe and did all this is reverse! I never even knew what a phrasal verb was until Dutch and Norwegian coworkers told me that English was easy to learn except for phrasal verbs. I can see how they can be challenging since the prepositions aren't always obvious (on, off, in, up, out, etc.). Regarding "butter" or "cotton," visitors may notice that New Yorkers often take it a step further, turning Manhattan into "Man ha' in." :) One thing that makes these videos particularly American is Gabby's cheerfulness. I know that our smiling, high energy and cheerfulness is better liked in some countries than others, but it really is linked to our sense of optimism, our openness with new people, and our (relative ) lack of social hierarchy. It says "come on in and join us!"

I'm learning english by myself now. Our teacher at my high school always say that we should speak English with british accent, 'cause british is the original one, while american is just a dialect like australian. I kinda agree, however I prefer american accent. I think it's all because I'm used to hearing american. Music, cinema, games. I love american rock bands like Nirvana, Linkin Park or Disturbed. I love the american movies. When I listen to american accent I fell like i'm going to bar with my bro. But when i listen to british it's like I've come to english parliament.

The American accent was actually the original sounding accent after the Revolutionary War British royals and nobles wanted to show their social status more clearly so they began to change their accent. Its called non-rhotic while Americans are rhotic speakers. As people in England began to see this change they also adopted the new way of speaking, and why the closer you are to London (maybe not so much now) the more you spoke in a posh accent while the further away because of less influence the less posh the accents sound. But at the end of the day accents really shouldn’t matter, as long as the other person can understand it shouldn’t matter how your accent actually sounds. What matters is that you should proud of yourself that you can speak another language and whatever you feel comfortable in is always the best way to do it.

Not unless you're from the south. :)

Now I'm confused if I will believe this video or not. Where are you from? Was planning to visit my best friend in U.S but I want (planning) to work in Canada.

@@mitchelleflores1770 im from the south (Georgia , USA) but to put it in better words: the US does not have one whole accent in total. No culture or accent is the same from the West to the north to even deep down south. For example people speak faster in New Jersey compared as to someone in the Tennessee. Think of every state as its own country. Everything is different, even from across the street.
So depends if these rules apply. So far this video is mainly focusing in (soul) southern English accent.

For me it depends on how I'm feeling, and it's very inconsistent. If I'm paying attention to something completely different, and not thinking, I'll lower the pronunciation of the t.
