I learned how to think in English by memorizing my favorite Bible verses. As a kid, I used to memorize Bible verses and even entire chapters just for fun. born and raise in a poor country, my mom's Bible was one of the few books available for me. Later in life, I had the privilege to come to the U.S and I found myself with the need to learn English and I had to learn it fast. My way to achieve that goal was by reading/saying out loud to myself the english translation of my most inspiring Bible verses in Spanish and try to feel the same emotions as I would in Spanish. ..it worked well for me.

when I started my journey through the English language, I had this issue translating from English to Portuguese to English again... So it used to be very tough to hold on. At that time there is no internet even the schools used to teach us to think in English... I started to create my method... be creative... I began tagging all objects with their name in English... mirror 🪞 chair 🪑 bathroom 🚿 and so on... Suddenly I was thinking automatically in English... the tricks worked... and more importantly never give up, never compare your progress with the others, get your rhythm...

I am a native speaker and taught for 5 years. When I was young I wasn't a great student in class, but in my own time I would read dictionaries to build vocabulary and read encyclopaedias to widen my knowledge. Music is great because songwriters employ repetition and patterns in their songs. I used to break down songs teaching in China to explore ructions patterns, syntax, colloquialisms etc. Its useful.

I am 56 and I am a native Portuguese speaker. I realized what you explained in your video many years ago. I decided to stop thinking that a chair is a "cadeira" and just put the image of a chair in my mind when I hear the word Chair. This approach made a lot for me. The difficult part is to do the same for intangible things. However the process is absolutely the same. Now my new challenge is to learn the expressions that native speakers use in their daily conversation. Why teachers never teach you that? This make the whole difference because you can't expect the other person will only talk plain vocabulary in a conversation.
By the way: The few words you've spoken in Portuguese in your video sounded very Brazilian. Congrats!

    Summary:
    1. start with small daily activities.
    2. listen to more English
    3. guess or plan what they will say
    4. stop learning through translation
    5. label objects
    6. talk to yourself
    7. think with a mantra or motto to get your started in that language
    8. do a little thinking in English each day

  • @orlandomendozamartinez1712

Nice video Gabby. Describing things in your target language by talking mentally or in an audible voice to yourself is an excellent option too. For example; if you are at home and see a table, think in your target language "A table. This is a table. It´s a wooden table. It´s a modern table. It isn´t a big table but it´s a small one. It's a beautiful table. I like this table. It´s a very useful table. I eat my meals at this table. My family also eats meals here too. How would my life be if I didn't have this table?... But I have it!... I enjoy having a table!.. But, wait a minute... it´s a small table and we are a family living here; so maybe I would try to sell this table and buy another one. That's the point!... We need to buy a new table!... Hey!.. Wait a minute again!... Don´t you remember the name of the person who gave you this table on your birthday?... Yes!... you're right: your mom. Oh, how could I forget this?... Well, in that case, I´m going to continue having this table. I will find a different place for it in my home and I will buy another one for my dining room. Mon I love you!... Every time from now, when I see this small table I'll remember you. I hope you still remember me from heaven".
Now, imagine all that you can speak to yourself about all things you can see in your home, or better yet, when you go out you will have a universe of people and things to do a similar exercise to this.
    Blessings!

Hey Gabby, my name is Jorge and I am from Paraguay. I have been learning English since I was 14 (now I am 24) at the beginning I had a lot of problem as you said understanding because I was translating everything in my head before I respond or simply to understand a question, so I struggled a lot before I started to think in English and everything was way easier... How did I do that?
Well many people might think this is crazy but what I do it's talk to myself in English, daily things such as WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TODAY? And start thinking about my ''agenda'' you know like TODAY I MUST GO TO CLASS, IN THE AFTERNOON I NEED TO MEET MY FRIENDS, TOMORROW I NEED TO PAY MY CREDIT CARD BILL and things like that you know, I made English my second daily language after Spanish, also having my computer and my phone in English help me up a lot too because I am constantly in a ''English environment'.''
Then you have thousands of other options to actually use your English everyday: CZcams, Music, read something in Internet, anything that might make you have some practice everyday, try to use my English in my real life situation, that's very helpful. I hope I can help someone with y tip. :)

What i try to do is listen to someone (no matter wether its music, podcasts or videos) first for few seconds or minutes and then i feel more comfortable and get udes to the language. Thats the way i use to get into english way of thinking. It has been helping me a lot.

Como empezar a pensar en ingles.
    1) Comience con pequeñas actividades en ingles
    -Configura tu celular en ingles
-Usa el ingles cuando paseas con tu perro.
    2) Escucha màs ingles
    -Escucha musica en ingles
    -Escucha podcast, radio, videos, netflix

Hello, again Gabby!. At 80's I was a teenager and I enjoy listening to songs in English, but honestly, I only understood a few words, nevertheless, I continued enjoying listening to the music and the melodic voices of the singers. At that time I did have the opportunity to learn the lyrics of my favorite songs. Now is different. I´m an English teacher and I say to my students they are fortunate because they are living in the technology age. Today it´s really easy to learn songs in our target language due to the Internet, especially CZcams channels. Now I can listen to, learn and sing my favorite songs in English. This exercise had let me improve my English pronunciation skill, and better yet, I've been motivated to write my own songs (about ten) in English. I would like someday could share my English songs with the world.
    Take care!

Practice is what you need. You can practice with native speakers on many different applications. The important thing is to practice speaking. You can practice speaking with yourself also. With a native speaker, they can give you corrections, but by practicing alone, you help your brain develop a connection between all of your vocabulary understanding and your mouth. Without practice, all the language you know is just an information data bank in your brain.
Things like Cambly can really be useful for this

I really liked the tip "Stop learning through translation" because it is what works for me. It helped me separate English from my native language in my head. There's one problem, though: there are times when I know how to say something in English but cannot translate it into my language :)
"Talk to yourself out loud in English" is also a nice tip I found helpful. I sometimes pretend to be a chef starring in a TV show and comment on what I'm doing while cooking a dish. Fun English practice :)
Anyway, thank you for this video! It was interesting to watch it. As a non-native speaker struggling with an accent, I also enjoyed your pronunciation :)

Here is a tip that has personally helped me improving my vocabulary: whether you are reading a book, watching a movie, listening to music, or having a conversation and you come across a word or phrase you don't know the meaning of, don't go looking for the meaning in your native language but look for the definition in English. This way your mind will learn to associate those words in English rather than translating in Spanish first.
