Absolutely love that key insight into the poma-lift. As a racer of far less abilities back in the day that’s what I loved about our rope tow along our practice course - always on our skis and close to the action.

0:25 "Focusing on the end game." That's what the world's ski instruction methods focus on. Your knees leaning and feet turning. The end results rather than what Makes your knees lean over and what makes your feet turn.
Facing and leaning your upper body down the hill as you change your weight from your downhill to your uphill arch, is what creates the leg angle that rolls the ski from edge-to-edge which allows the skis to make the turns for you.

OK, let me say that I don't follow skiing so I didn't even know who she was until I saw her on Fallon. Pathetic, I know. But let me just say that she is not only an amazing, amazing athlete but she seems charming and humble -- considering :) -- and then is a beautiful young woman on top of it all. She is amazing and so cool.

Exceptional natural talent. Drive, determination, dedication, heart and soul and that natural talent have all come out on top. Congratulations to her and all who have done so much for her, for which she is beyond humbly thankful. But, a little know bit of secret fact................. It was Oprah who taught Shiffrin all she knows about skiing. Really. I swear. Oprah is the greatest skier (amoungst other talents) of all time!

Michaela is the third winningest ski racer on the World Cup circuit...Only Lindsey Vaughn and Ingemar Stenmark
have more wins......Michaela has a shot to catch Lindsey but it is a bit of a longshot...She needs eleven wins to

You can see the protection she feels for her mom. "You go be surprised over in your corner, I am going to go win this race". Don't speak ill of her family, they are one SOLID unit.
In order to position your body parts and weight correctly and consistently where the skis need them to be to allow them to make the turns, you have to create an image in your mind that is simple to remember.
Imagine you are standing between two Barstools. You want to rest your Right cheek on the Right Barstool. Take your weight off your Right foot, lift your Right cheek and slide it over onto the Right Barstool. By lifting your cheek, you are forcing your upper body to stay vertical. By sliding your cheek over to the Barstool, you are creating the new leg angle that your left ski needs to roll it over. To increase the leg angle for a specific radius turn, adjust how far you slide your cheek over.
It is Not a movement by your knees to the side alone. So, there is no "Tipping" of the knees. Without the proper upper body position and weight change, you won't be able to balance on that outside ski with "Tipping" alone.
Essentially allowing your body to fall down the hill and catching it with the new outside ski carve. Mikaela in slowmo demonstrates that very well.
That said, when one is not carving, but instead is skidding, such as in the woods & bumps, I’m not quite sure it totally works this way.
@@bobdavis2689 That's what skiing is. You get off the lift and fall to the bottom while your skis control the rate of your fall by turning when you position your upper body correctly and change your weight from one foot to the other.
What I just described is the Technically Correct way to ski. From there, you have to adapt for the changing conditions. Unless you understand the basics, you have no way to figure out how to adapt.
In Bumps, you can actually ski technically correct or carve, without modifications. Because of the tightness of the turns, your upper body positioning has to be in the direct opposite direction of your skis. By doing that you anticipate the next leg change. Skis one way, upper body the other way.
You can't do that in the woods as your upper body would be hitting the trees you are skiing around. There, you have to use your legs to swivel your feet during an up motion for a quick direction change.
its a rich persons sport. most ppl dont have access to participate in competitive levels at this sport, such as other sports. so you dont see a true reflection of the best potential athletes that could dominate the sport. if you did, it would look like a different demographic. thats not to take anything away from Mikaela though, shes still amazing.
You can do it for less if you live in a small ski town, have access to excellent coaches (or your Mom is your ex-racer coach), skip constant travel to race at other ski areas to train instead as Mikaela did at times, and are sensationally, freakishly gifted. But yes, very expensive sport. There are very few sports in which having wealthy parents isn't a big advantage.

It is an expensive sport, but when I was coaching I had kids whose parents were blue collar and had to scrap to get the money for their kids to race; often buying equipment used giving up other things to pay for it. I wasn’t able to start racing until senior year because my parents couldn’t afford it. Some people just make it happen despite not being well off.
The great ski champ Bode Miller grew up in a small town in northern NH, in a log cabin with no indoor plumbing or electricity. His first wins, he was skiing on K2 seconds, i.e. factory reject skis.
In the US...yes...most ski racers are NOT poor. It is hard to get to the top without going to a dedicated ski academy...much like tennis. But skiing in Austria and Switzerland are national sports. Everyone skis. If you have talent as a youth, you will be recognized and you do not have to have so much money. Bode Miller did not come from money...he was just an INSANE athlete. Phil and Steve Mahre were freakish athletes who probably would have been NFL players if they chose to go that route.

K Lu, I’m an alpine skier and having you mom hang around you isn’t bad, it’s that just most of the alpine skiers moms don’t understand what they are doing, so then people think that her mom doesn’t know what she doing and even when she does.

Jordan B re read my comment, I never said that. It’s the media that’s making her looks like a underdog prodigy when in reality she’s a rich kid with supportive parents.
I don’t think her parents are THAT rich. Anesthesiologists make good money, but not hedge fund money. I think her parents being excellent skiers was way more impactful than the money, but obviously you need some to pay for a ski school in VT. All factors need to come together perfectly to create a world champion.

I’m there as well but....almost all sports require deep pockets if you want to reach the top
It's true and saddest thing about it is that nowadays almost only kids from rich families can ski and often times these rich parents push their kids into skiing even if they don't want to and the talent and will is sidetracked.
I'm having trouble seeing where the ROI is.
No, because I’m an alpine ski racer and i can tell you that if the kid doesn’t want to win he won’t win even if you pay all the coaches in the world. Yes it can help for private trainings but when your with your ski club you progress the most because their not only concentrated on you they will be blunt and won’t pick favorites.
