Should You Stagger Your Gas Rings?

- This is probably one of the oldest myths of the AR15/M16 platform. In this video we're going to explain exactly how the bolt & gas rings function, and actually fire a rifle on full auto with only ONE gas ring. Watch the video to see how it goes.

Good info
For the record, i really like the blunt, "listen to me son" honesty that comes across in all SOL videos. You guys really take an interest in people having exactly what they need and nothing that they dont! Cant wait to start a SOL build.
My ar stopped locking back on last round....gas ring gaps were lined up when I pulled the bcg out. Staggered them, and its been gtg since. Just something that happened to me. Maybe it'll help someone else.
Yes, just like a piston rings.
I just started watching your channel and have learned more in ten videos than from the last half dozen "gunsmiths" that don't know squat. You've converted me to your way of thinking about the AR.
Lol I was taught to stagger my rings in the army. My life has been a lie! Lol. I love this video series
Do a video on on your little shooting bay you have. Asking for a friend...
Excellent video. Second one of yours that I watched. Subbed.
What are your thoughts on one piece gas rings?
I just hit 10,038 rounds as of yesterday. Ive never changes the gas rings. Yes the carrier drops on the bolt with ease. Is it important to change them out or if my rifle is still cycling just leave them in?
Michael Smith we’ve run guns much longer without changing them. That being said, if it’s a rifle you trust your life with, replacing them for preventive maintenance is probably a good idea. The 10,000rd mark is a good benchmark. Military M4s maintenance calls for them to be changed every 5,000.
Not one iota, just like I tell em
Is 3 rounds actually a good test ?
I dig what your saying and more or less agree. Its not any different than rings on a piston in an engine.. I just would wonder if 3 rounds is an adequate test...
With Knowing how the rings work (compresses the gap closed when installed ) no test was actually needed, he just did it for fun . So 3 rounds was enough , 30 would have been cooler though 🇺🇸
Sooooo.... Is it still good practice to stager them or is there zero harm in them being aligned because every damn time I clean my bolt those gas rings line up perfectly like it's ment to be and it's a pain in the ass trying to stagger them...
Doesn’t matter. When you insert the bolt into the carrier, the gap is virtually non existent because they are compressed. Imagine like a piston ring in an engine
👍
My ar is shooting around 3 4 rounds then jamming basically bending shells tring to chamber them ? Any reason to why it would be bending shells during the loading prossess
Something is drastically out of alignment. It's either your bolts gas tube or where the bolt mates with the upper receiver. Also, be sure to clean the chamber spotless. If you have another bcg, try running that. You also could have a bad spring somewhere or a poorly balanced buffer weight & spring. Also, take your extractor apart and make sure it looks okay AND take a small punch and depress the ejector rod on the face of the bolt. Make sure it's still strong but not overly and see if you can feel any grit when depressing.
@@TerminalM193 it was my gas rings in my bolt they were completely fried so I put a helical one piece ring on it
@@Bluegrass-ballistics wow, can't believe I forgot to even mention gas rings. I haven't had gas rings go bad on me in a long time.
@@TerminalM193 yeah it had the regular 3 rings on it and the 2 outer rings had huge gaps in them and the middle one was very small so they were missing a 3rd of each outer ring so I put the solid 1 pice ring in that don't have any gaps for gas to get thru ...were its a 7.5 5.56 its got alot of gas pressure on the bolt and rings and they wear faster on a shorty the shorter the barrel the less time ya rings will hold up done the ring test on my bolt and it collapsed under its own weight very easy
@@Bluegrass-ballistics I've never heard of a singular gas ring that takes the place of the 3 normal gas rings. Are there any benefits? What's the product called? I'd like to look into it!
Not to mention the gas rings move around anyway. So if they are worried about it, line them the fuck up, fire some rounds, and they won't be lined up anymore
With all the BS info, and keyboard commandos out there on CZcams, just wanted to say Bravo Zulu on the vid. Clear, concise and informative. You have DEFINITELY, and easily I might add, gained a new subscriber. Wish there were more videos that would adhere to that formula. Again, great job, and keep em coming!
Awesome lesson!
Thanks for the info. You guys Rock! 👍
Jorge Cortez quit brown nosing!
I have never made sure that the gas rings are staggered. I'd never even heard that this needs to be done while active duty Marine Infantry.
I've heard a couple people say that in the Army, but I already knew it wasn't true and never staggered them either.
I check for being staggered out of habit from building gasoline engines even though in a rifle with the pressures there is plenty for the bolt to run.
I dont even teach staggering gas rings any more on my carbine classes. Thanks Mike for helping kill that myth.
Nice. Never heard it explained that way. Cool video man
Use to be guilty myself, thanks for finally showing this, i am an armorer at my gun shop and hear it all the time, thanks again
Use a one piece ring
Why
They have the best armorers in the country working there.
Great info ..... Thanks
the whole gas ring alignment issue seems to be a another symptom of severe fatal bullshititis , i just watched another video where the guy ran the gun with NO GAS RINGS and it ran just fine , so what does that tell ya ;-)
HAH!!! I've been saying this for YEARS! that old myth just won't fucking die!
Good to know, thanks.
Awesome! Thanks
a single 3 shot burst on one (new?) gas ring is hardly a real world test.
try 200 rds and get back to us.
while your knowledge runs deep, the boys at Crane, the engineers at colt, fn and our own DOD still call for staggering. I'll go with them.
Do you also make sure to tap the forward assist?
@@cottonballs185 after chambering quietly when hunting in the field, always.
Cause we all know the military doesn't perpetuate myths like crazy on all sorts of things
Good for you, you just keep on being ignorant.. ain't nobody gonna teach you anything new,, you're the man,,lol
I've never seen evidence of colt, fn and the DOD call for staggering. Would you kindly send us the proof through a link if possible?
Where did get the T shirt, it's a Led Zeppelin song.🤠
John Barton they are available on their (SOLGW) website.
Hey I know that guy!!!!!
I am 10. I been here before, it was awesome! I got an AR-15 painted with 3D eyes and a shark mouth that you see on A-10s. Fucking awesome!
Great, that's one less annoying thing I have to do when cleaning my guns
As if staggering the gas rings takes too much time.
