That was used as a fire pit when I was younger. My dad would cut out squares at the bottom of the drum to burn leaves, and broken branches stay warm when he cleaned the yard in the winter.

For making holes inthe barrel, I take a pick and punch a bunch of holes around the bottom on the sides for airflow then I drill 2 or 3 holes in the bottom with a 1.5 or 2 inch hole saw for the ashes to fall out of. Takes about 5 minutes to make enought holes for airflow and to let ash run out.
