- I've covered a few quick speedruns on my channel, but I think this has got to be the shortest so far! Using a wrong warp trick, speedrunners have been able to beat Super Mario Bros. 3 in JUST over 3 minutes! Honestly, I think it's a really fascinating trick.

As someone who is only interested in watching/ hearing about speed runs bc of my interest in game glitches, that the any% runs are considered "not real" runs is _wild_.
You’re not “playing the game” if you’re skipping every part that makes it a good game in the first place.
I assume that’s their reason, I can’t think of anything else.
@@joltganda Yeah but you'd already had to have played the game if you've figured out all those wacky shortcuts.
So they're trying to get more out of the game by trying to figure out how to get through less of it...

Sometimes the Any% Glitched runs can end in a few seconds so you should not see it as a 'competitive' speedrun category but more for just the viewers' fun.
It's definitely not real speedrunning, despite being cool. It's different to glitch a game than to complete it.
The fact that people managed to figure out this code trickery is the real achievement, imo.

The best thing according to the RGME comments is that the end game routine to jump to was known for a while through ROM hacking, but it took someone messing around (finding the wrong warp in 7-1 that loaded a corrupted world 8 map) to find a way for arbitrary code execution by chance.
Retro Mechanics Explained goes over it in such an interesting technical way. But I do wish I was seeing this for the first time, as I do think that you explained this well.

The red pipe trick in 7-1 is so specific and precise, it's almost as if they intended it to be there

This is my favorite Arbitrary Code Execution Glitch because it's like Mario uses his arcane knowledge of the art of plumbing to sneak around Bowser.

Managed to go to the little Timmy level, but I did not managed to get warped to the ending (yet)...
Instead the games crash and the emulator Nestopia display the message "CPU jam" (I'm not surprised)
IDK if I did something wrong, if the emulator is faulty, or if i'm just unlucky lol, anyways, very cool video, nicely explained!
I know I’m late but I’m reminded of the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night any%, which is a memory corruption involving inventory spaces with items to get the hexadecimal to the ending. (And most high level speedrunners, like DragonBlitz, NEVER do this category because it doesn’t “show the full game” to run)

There's no way someone discovered this by playing it on original hardware when they were kids - this must be combined with a memory address display on the side or some other indication of what's going on.
If only my dad could speedrun the milk store in 3 minutes..
Looking at that level shape, I'd say you were looking at some sort of raw code or memory incorrectly interpreted as level data.

I already did it in 1-4, though, I can't do it again.
It was the same glitch used, along with the two koopas there, Though, you would warp to the end of the game after entering the pipe
I don't know how I did it exactly, but maybe the leaf power up do help somehow in that, I think?, but yeah-
I wouldn't say it's not real speedrunning but I personally put a higher value on being skilled at playing the game than being skilled at breaking it. Both are impressive but I just prefer seeing mastery of a game's intended mechanics.

speedruns might be impressive, but you know what is more impressive? Somehow finding those like unrealistic and completely out of the world glitches to be faster
