Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of Perception, 1: What is Phenomenology?

  • An introduction to the project of phenomenology through the Preface and Chapter 1, "Sensation," from Merleau-Ponty's *Phenomenology of Perception*.
    [I just noticed an error in a quotation I typed on the screen (though I read it correctly). The quotation at 40:24-34 should be: "I would sense precisely insofar as I correspond with the sensed, insofar as this latter ceases to have a place in the objective world, and insofar as it signifies nothing to me."]

    There's something about CZcams lectures where the lower the view count, the better they get! I'm 23 min in and already really enjoy your style of presenting!

    This is the best introduction to Merleau-Ponty’s “Phenomenology of Perception” I have seen. Thank you!

    I really appreciate this lecture, it made me appreciate Merleau-Ponty. He's very hard to read and the text is dense, but I suppose it was because I was approaching it as just a text. Thank you for this introduction.

      That's an excellent way to put it--it's not "just a text," but a very demanding work that you have to move through quite slowly. I'm glad my lecture was valuable for you--that's the kind of result I was hoping for when I recorded it!

    I can feel your passion for philosophy when you talked about, for instance, Merleau-Ponty, which I believe makes your videos really stand out in contrast to tons of other similar videos on CZcams that only treat philosophy as some lifeless "knowledge". Thank you for your videos!

    Jeeeeeze this just blew my mind. You’re also so articulate and easy to understand and sometimes someone else putting it in words as to what I study and I read can really make it solidify as what the hell im doing. Thank you for this intro to merleau ponty, it really really tied a lot together for me.

    How do you discern description from explanation or analysis?

    • @JohnRusson123
      @JohnRusson123  Před 25 dny +1

      Description is expressing the form in which something appears; explanation is attempting to say why something appears; analysis is breaking something down into its constituent parts.
