- An introduction to the project of phenomenology through the Preface and Chapter 1, "Sensation," from Merleau-Ponty's *Phenomenology of Perception*.
[I just noticed an error in a quotation I typed on the screen (though I read it correctly). The quotation at 40:24-34 should be: "I would sense precisely insofar as I correspond with the sensed, insofar as this latter ceases to have a place in the objective world, and insofar as it signifies nothing to me."]
There's something about CZcams lectures where the lower the view count, the better they get! I'm 23 min in and already really enjoy your style of presenting!
This is the best introduction to Merleau-Ponty’s “Phenomenology of Perception” I have seen. Thank you!
Thanks! That's a very kind comment!
Completely agree
I'm a philosophy undergrad tackling this difficult book and I'm glad you made this. Thanks for putting it out here for free you've saved me lots of stress!
That's great--that's just what I'm hoping for!
I really appreciate this lecture, it made me appreciate Merleau-Ponty. He's very hard to read and the text is dense, but I suppose it was because I was approaching it as just a text. Thank you for this introduction.
That's an excellent way to put it--it's not "just a text," but a very demanding work that you have to move through quite slowly. I'm glad my lecture was valuable for you--that's the kind of result I was hoping for when I recorded it!
Practice, experience, thought. The order.
I was looking for an explainer in Spanish but your video outdoes all the ones I checked. Thanks you!
@Renata I appreciate your saying so!
I can feel your passion for philosophy when you talked about, for instance, Merleau-Ponty, which I believe makes your videos really stand out in contrast to tons of other similar videos on CZcams that only treat philosophy as some lifeless "knowledge". Thank you for your videos!
Thank you for a very nice comment!
I took a philosophy class in college 30 years ago and came across MP. It’s interesting now to go back and study him. Thanks for this
Finding your channel made my day! Thank you for your excellent presentation ❤️❤️
I appreciate your kind words, and I'm very happy to hear that you found the lecture helpful.
Thank you so much for this one, the part about detachment of theoretical philosophy from actually studying it in life really spoke to me.
Thanks Tomasz--I'm happy to hear that!
Thank you so much! You are a great professor. I'm glad to have been introduced to Merleau-Ponty in this way. (Amazing philosophy, by the way)
@Renata Thanks! That's a very nice thing to say.
So fascinating! Seems that we can change our experience and expand our perception by our mind's decisions.
Jeeeeeze this just blew my mind. You’re also so articulate and easy to understand and sometimes someone else putting it in words as to what I study and I read can really make it solidify as what the hell im doing. Thank you for this intro to merleau ponty, it really really tied a lot together for me.
Very nice of you to say this! I hope you will keep reading Merleau-Ponty :)
Flourishing....awakening..in freedom.. freedom is a field with no concept, no opinions, no conclusions which allows you to discover something new about yourselves..
Thank you for making this philosophy meaningful and accessible.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for the very kind comment!
Another brilliant lecture! Thank you 🙏
Brilliant! Thank you John 🙏
Thanks!
Superb lecture.
Awe-inspiring! Thank you
Nice of you to say so :)
on my way, I have learned how to read a book ,thank you
Great lecture.
Thanks!
How do you discern description from explanation or analysis?
Description is expressing the form in which something appears; explanation is attempting to say why something appears; analysis is breaking something down into its constituent parts.
@@JohnRusson123 thanks John
I still don't understand at this point but i hope to see once I get to the next topics
I´m very interested in the phenomenology. Can I re-upload your lectures on Mearleau Ponty?
Hello--I appreciate your interest. Re-upload them where?
@@JohnRusson123 On my own youtube Channel of course Der Bücherwurm / The bookworm.
Einstein says its imagination that is more than knowledge, his thought experiment created his theory of relativity.
