  • Ruoholahti ( Swedish: Gräsviken ) is a subdivision of Helsinki's 20th district, the West Harbor , in the southern city center. The seaside district was built as a residential zone in the 1990s and attracted numerous tech companies to the area.
Historically the area included several islands in the adjacent waters that were mainly used for recreation. In the early 20th century, the channels between the islands and the mainland were gradually filled in with earth, extending the mainland. The area primarily served as the base of a cargo port. Ruoholahti remained an industrial and warehouse zone until 1991, when the construction of residential and office buildings began. At the same time, the massive 1940s premises housing the Nokia Cable Factory was transformed into the largest cultural venue in the country, known as the Cable Factory. The compounds house museums, galleries, art schools, dance and performance venues, associations, and businesses. The large-scale halls host concerts, exhibitions, fairs, and festivals.
Ruoholahti is intersected by the Ruoholahti Channel, which is lined with bike routes and pedestrian walkways. Ruoholahti connects with the Lapinlahti district through a tunnel and with Jätkäsaari through bridges. Around 3,000 people live in Ruoholahti and around 14,000 people work here daily.
