I spent the past few weeks testing out the features in the newest After Effects update and these are my favourite updates for After Effects 2023.

It's still the slowest software out there that cannot even use a graphics card efficiently or render anything in real-time with high-end specs.
If you hold back investing in features long enough you can get bonus PR for fixing old software.
We'll know Adobe truly hear us they redesign AE to be a node based software.

I think the layer system is ok for simplicity/other types of projects- but if working on complex shits, it would be nice to have a node setup just readily available to swap back and forth.

I really hope they get their house in order. I was a massive fan of the CC suite but even though I kept upgrading my PC every piece of software felt bloated and ran slow. I finally made the leap to D.R. with Fusion and I'm so happy. Got rid of the monthly subscription, it runs amazing and no jumping back and forth between Premiere, After Efffects and Media encoder. I was really afraid to jump ship from AE since I rely a lot on the camera tracker for it and I still think its one of the best and definetly fastest camera trackers that are available at a decent price. It's been hard mastering DR's tracker and its deffinetly slower but it's really on point once you learn to use it.

As someone who uses mogrts in Premiere, I hope this will be a game changer. Managers just do not understand why one "simple" change might take an hour plus to re-render. Will try this out. Thanks for the update.
Damn that's some great updates. That track mat feature is amazing. We have to get used to it now rather than doing it the old way!

I’m so excited for this that I didn’t even notice.. although I did wonder why the track mattes have been weirdly almost intuitive lately. Selecting key frames by color will be super useful too. I’ll be more excited about mogarts when I know what a mogart is.
The last one is the biggest one for me, for sure. I've avoided using MOGRTs in some situations because I was working on such a tight deadline. So, this should help a lot if it's really as fast as they say.

The track matte update was a really a game changer
Although the track matte update is cool we also had the set matte effect, to avoid duplicating and moving layers.
These are awesome updates ! I hope they improve premiere also.

The track mattes alone change everything.
My favourite update is OCIO support - this is HUGE for AE. Now Photoshop needs the same support and they have my custom again.

My workflow for editors using my mogrts has been 'import the mogrts for timing, and then turn them off until you export.' Hope this works.
If Adobe keeps this up, I may consider jumping back to their products. Those last few changes are amazing. Till then, Resolve Studio it is.
The only thing I hope from Adobe is that it doesn't come with a bunch of bugs.

holy shit they FINALLY updated the trkmatte system... you have no idea how many times i just sigh from the duplication proces and messy organization. the fact that we couldn't even group multiple shapes to a single matte layer in a 2022 motion graphics program is crazy. im glad they saw the light. also god about time they added native h264 export!!
I actually don't use AE at all and use Davinci for years. But this video made me curious what the big dea isl with this Update. And yeah cool you guys are getting that stuff. I hope they do much more cause competition only benefits us all.
I wish correct handling VFR in Premiere Pro but that track matte stuff in like an revolution.
I have replaced Illustrator with VectorStyler and Photoshop with GIMP/ Affinity Photo. I could use Blender for 2D motion graphics, but I missed some After Effects' features. What do you guys use as After Effects alternative?

Best update evvvvvverrrrrr... i love when softwares give quality of life updates. The masking issue is my arch enemy. Loved that now there is an easy fix for that. And key frame color 💕, so simple but so useful.

You forget about the "set matte" effect Existing for years, this way you could get around copying 3 times, otherwise great video!

I think the whole layers/tracks section needs a revamp. If youve ever used music DAW software, the beauty in them layouts (cubase)...
-assign more colors
-folders-expand tracks
-thicker/thinner track option

Great, so all they need to do now is re-introduce RED wide gamut support into ICC, support professional rushes processing by adding metadata burn in and archive metadata export, fix the interpreted frame rate issues in ALE exports, add rec2020 to Premiere timelines, fix the shutter issue in the Premiere transform effect, fix the lumetri vs mattes in ae, support a professional AAF round trip pipeline, and for the love of god find a better solution to the time it takes to save a project!
The track mattes will be helpful though.

Creators and motion designers have said it again again. AE is outdated and needs a massive rework. It has been said many times even though it sounds impossible, AE needs to be written from scratch. It needs a new engine and new code.
The stuff is all great but they still haven't nailed down the multi-frame processing thing. With every update of after effects it's either worse or maybe better but most of the time worse.
