- “The Central British Fund was looking for volunteers who would go to Germany [...] for six months in order to work in what became known as the DP camps - the Displaced Persons camps. When the Jews were out of the concentration camps - and this is my gripe in a sort of a way - because everybody in the world knew immediately about all the six million that died - nobody ever asked a question about the survivors.
[...] America didn’t want them. England didn’t want them.”
To commemorate World Refugee Day, we feature aid provider Lily Schwarzschild’s testimony. Lily was born in London, England in 1920. When World War II ended, Lily Schwarzschild joined the British Army’s Jewish Relief Unit to aid concentration camp survivors in British-occupied zones in Germany.
Lily was interviewed by USC Shoah Foundation in 1997.
Designated by the United Nations, World Refugee Day occurs internationally on June 20 to celebrate and remember those forced to flee their homes to escape persecution.

I took a class in college called *Literature of the Holocaust.* We had the opportunity to meet and speak to a husband and wife who met in a concentration camp. It was a very emotional talk. She was 15 at the time and her job was to take the belongs of the prisoners and sort and catalog their property. He was 14 and his job was to empty and clean the cattle cars. He removed the dead which were later burned. It was hardest during the winter months because he had to use a shovel to pry the bodies from the flooring. When a prisoner died they would lay In everyones pee and freeze to the boards. I took that class over 23 years ago and will never forget their story.
Oh my god. Everytime I think I've heard the most horrific stories there's always something else that is more abhorrent than the worst I've heard. I'm glad you were able to attend that talk and now years down the road you wrote it here where I in forum learn from it. This is how it should be and I wish everyone were paying attention. Especially now.

This was an absolutely fascinating interview of the aftermath of the war. It was amazing to hear about the black market of the soils of war and how the world dealt with and helped the displaced peoples. She has a wonderful memory! Great interview.

Unselfish people were and are always rare. Mrs. Schwarzschild was one of them. So many people suffered almost as much after the war as when the Nazis were about, and without volunteers like Lily, they had no chance to start over. SALUTE, Lily!

What a wonderful interview, Lily is such an inspiration, what a gutsy young woman she was, such determination, so full of life, she did have a very full life and a life well lived.
What a lady …They don’t make them like her anymore. I am 83 now ..I was born in Manchester during the war .but I don’t remember any of it…..only the street party at the end of the war. I started work at 15 and worked until I was 69…. The world has changed so much and unfortunately not for the better….Very interesting interview …Thank you so much….

What I think is really crazy, is that antisemitism is still alive today! I get an insult every once in a while because I am messianic. You would think that people could just live and let live. We are all just humans who are hopefully doing the best we can to get by.
This is a sure treasure. I am literally holding my breath, after in fact just assuming that the survivors were treated as heroes. Boy, was I wrong, and cannot fathom first surviving the horrors of the German camps, to being treated as trash afterwards. Many must have regretted not perishing with their family members in the camps.
Were the survivors too much of a reminder of the evil men can do?

I’m not sure I could survive as well as these people did nor, most likely, make the hard decisions they had to make at such a young age. God above bless each and everyone that may still be living. His frank smile and his enthusiasm for collaborating and offering a shoulder to vent so much suffering has infected me.

Yes nobody believed any country could be that evil but tragically that particular country… was that evil & worse!
Yes and no. There were also ppl who hid ppl or doing other things. Even they were not allowed to speak up against it..they could also be denounced, KZ or k* or jailed. Germans and Austrians ect were also afraid of them. (Those who were against them.) Well, it's a double edged sword in that case. But no doubt yes there were lot of members of them..til they found out. They brainwashed them and most of them even didn't know what was really going on. They also lied to them. Big time. Even they didn't believe or/and know that for a long time. Til after or at the end.

Did you try looking for your relatives in my country, the Philippines . My little country has accepted Jewish refugees at a time when no countries wouldnt. Historical records show there were more than a thousand who came.

Everytime she was telling a story the interviewer interrupted her with other question unrelated: she wasn't really interested 😢😢
'Do you remember their name' - if she did she'd have said the name.
Every one of these Shoah interviewers work for free. Their only motivation is to be sure every question is asked so that people like you can come along and get every bit of information from these interviews as possible. This woman behind the camera and behind the questions is a Jew and by virtue of just _that_ she is more interested than you will ever hope to be. That is not a put down written to make you feel bad, it is simply factual.
Perhaps you should dedicate your time to work for Shoah so that you may understand better.

One can learn a lot from history. Its very important that these testimonies should be shared. I wish the leaders of this world can learn a thing or two

What's with the spelling? Learn your languages
It is for documentation purposes and other reasons I do not know. Names could be misunderstood or spelled wrong without this. If you have done any measure of historical research or genealogy etc, you would understand how critical this is. Considering the fact that many deny the holocaust happened, it's important for history to document these stories and have the names accurate
Schwarzschild you mean ? English is a horrible language. I learn Russian and it is phonetic and beautiful. English spelling needs an overhaul and eliminate some excess letters like S,Y, and Q. Everyone knows how to spell Schwarzschild because he discovered the event horizon of a black hole.
