  • We did a quick overnight backpacking trip to Mora Flats in the Pecos Wilderness. This was our 1st backpacking trip in 6 years!
Trail info: trailhead at just over 9000' altitude, we camp at approx 9400', and trail goes up and down to 9800' several times before dropping down to our campsite area at Mora Flats. It is not a flat hike, nor is it a gradual down into a valley, overall altitude gain/loss was approx 1000'.
The trailhead starts at Iron Gate Campground, which is up a 5 mile bumpy rutted dirt road (4 wheel drive vehicle recommended). The route takes you up Hamilton Mesa trail for approx a mile, then splits off - left continues on to Hamilton Mesa, right is Rociada trail leading down the ridgeline to a valley called Mora Flats. It is beautiful there, and there are designated campsites with fire rings... part of the reason we chose this destination as our backpacking trip.
We had a great time, got to try out new gear, and see what we need to replace before our next overnight in the wilderness.

Thanks. We love it here but our season is about to come to an end already. Snow expected in mountains this week. If you are interested in hiking Pecos Wilderness, there is a guy "Star Mountain Outdoors" who has been hiking all the trails this summer and his videos are great. Just watched his latest "Santa Barbara Divide Loop". Might be one you and friends might want to plan for next year.

Great video! I've hiked to Hamilton Mesa a few times, but have never taken the fork down to Mora Flats. After viewing your video, I will! (And I'll take my fly rod with me!) Thanks!

I would say it looks like you made out on your trip just fine...hopefully fine enough that not another 6 years will pass before another...lol...thanks for taking us along....

Well done video! I am glad you were able to get onto the trails in the Pecos Wilderness and hike this beautiful piece. I will have to make this hike you both did and have a look at an area less visited by folks. Thanks for sharing.
I was not able to complete my hike a couple weeks ago as I announced on my CZcams Channel. My hiking partner developed 2 blisters on each feet that didn't want to reside.

thanks! It is a great hike, and we highly recommend it for anyone. Lots of ups and downs but overall Moderate trail. Wish we could have stayed an extra night to explore more. Take care.
